I wonder if Geoff actually loves golf games as an opportunity to get some built-up anger and frustration and misery out, not in catharsis but by finally boiling over until he can let it out at something, making the golf into a proxy for his feelings.
Because he seems to always love going into these golf games even though the same thing always happens. He must get something from the experience.
