I hate it when people hate on my favourite book ( Harry Potter ) when they haven't ever read it. I can understand after you have read a book and you decide that you really didn't enjoy it but knowing nothing about and hating on it is just wrong
Same! I feel like that sort of negativity is often towards authors like Cassandra Clare and Sarah J. Maas. Just because you've read ONE book (or none) and didn't like it doesn't mean that the series is trash.
@@emma.328 I do that a lot with authors.. if I read one book from them and I didn't like it chances are I'm not going to read anything from that author again. When they hate on my favorite books and movies as if it's a fact that they're awful instead of it just being their respectful opinion.
You... you put it into words :') I've had friends do this with books, anime, ships, games - things I love dearly. I'm ok with differing opinions, and even a discussion, but I don't want to have to debate/defend my favourite media all the freaking time! It's exhausting.
Exactly. I don't mind if someone doesn't like something do, but to act like It's factually bad because it wasn't to your liking is where I have a problem.
The thing about books is that as a reader you pick what appeals to your personal tastes. So if someone don't love a book I do, they simply don't have the same taste and that is okay, there is plenty books to go around and everyone can find one they love. Like I personally don't like books with a heavy romance plot, but I don't mind that some do, (that said, working at a secondhand store with a book section I've noticed certain demographics lean towards certain genres) 48 likes? I don't think I've ever gotten that many, thanks guys^^
You being such a kind person and good reviewer makes me want to be more accepting of other readers opinions! I feel like if a few months ago someone told me my favorite book was trash I would get so offended, but now I don't think I'd care that much! Thanks, Jesse!
I think another reaction to why people get offended is when readers point out the flaws or notice problem areas in the book. Then, since they did not notice it at first they question why they originally enjoyed the book in the first place and unfairly take it out on the one who noticed it.
Exactly! i get frustrated when people judge me for reading a certain book and/or liking certain book or certains aspects of a book. There are some books even I know may not be the best ever written but because of my emotional attach to them they have a special place in my heart. but sometimes people get to judgy without even listening to your reasons on why you like a book or not

Thanks for discussing the problematic "problematic" problem. lol. That's one of my biggest issues with booktube is that EVERYTHING is "problematic"....when real life is problematic. Thats honestly what makes stories interesting a lot of the time. People expect every relationship to be "perfect and healthy" when thats just not how life is sometimes. Also...it makes you feel guilty for loving a book that has "problematic" aspects. The "Shatter Me" series is a perfect example. I am so here for problematic Warner... fight me. I also love ACOMAF and when people try to throw out the "problematic" card on that one I get pissed. People literally try to find the problematic aspects in every book so they are able to identify as a "critical reader". It's just annoying to me. lol sorry about the rant. I had to get it off my chest. With that whole thing being said, I do think everyone is entitled to their own opinion and shouldn't make people feel like poop if they like something problematic. haha
The problem, to me at least, isn't that there's problematic elements in a story, the problem is this elements aren't adressed as problematic and are maybe even considered as romantic. Im soooo here for books talking about unhealthy relationships (romantic or in a family) but i don't want the book to tell me they are okay.
I respectfully disagree. I don't think that an author is bound to address something as problematic. Books aren't meant to teach morals. They are meant to entertain. If you haven't developed morals by the time you read a book, it's too late lol. Plus, problematic to you in a book may not be problematic to the author. You have to agree to disagree, cause it's just writing, and nobody is hurting anybody. :)
don't get me wrong i definitely feel like there are stories where there are problematic aspects, like you are stating. But i think that sometimes that term is over used. I read a book recently about someone with a mental illness... and the husband was for the most part a good guy, but the girl was way too dependent on him, to an unhealthy degree. So many reviews were stating how "problematic" it was and removed stars... but in that particular story it worked because with mental illness things are often times a little messed up or NOT completely healthy.... relationships aren't going to be flawless and its okay to write it and show it and not feel like you have to equalize it in the end. Sometimes i feel like the term problematic dumbs down plots. Readers aren't stupid and thats what keeps people thinking and analyzing... it's okay if there are problematic aspects that aren't always equalized or stated straight out as WRONG. I think we need to give readers more credit and let people think about these things. We don't always need to be fed morals.. ESPECIALLY as adults, or even young adults. We should be exposed and able to come up with our own conclusions... it teaches critical thinking skills.
Avid readers get really protective over their favorite books... and sometimes when someone asks for a book recommendation, we get very excited and may scare them with our giant list of amazing reads

I really loved this discussion! I feel like my point of view on this has changed so much in the last few years, going from the "I can't believe you wouldn't like my fav book" to "We all have different tastes", and I think you phrased it all so well!
Thank you so much for addressing this. I feel it is especially hard for the younger readers or readers who don't feel they have a lot of irl support. Hearing you say this and empathizing with them will help them grow as people. For both sides of the coin. 💖💖 (EDIT: also I love that you have so much fun with these videos. It inspires me~)
I will never fully understand why people get so mad at others over not liking their favorite book. Everyone is different and no two people are alike. Yes, it's great when you find someone who loves the same book as you, but I also like to hear people's dislikes as well. It opens my eyes up to how other people think and their opinions. Even if they hate a favorite book of mine I'm not going to lash out at them. I just see that they have a different opinion than me and move on.
I truly love the way how you're always a) so in love with books, b) so polite and c) so thoughtful about everything. I'm saying that way too often, but we would get along splendidly. Of course people get offended when someone talks trash about their favourite books, but I'm not someone who minds. Everyone should love their own books. On an unrelated note, I'm the happiest girl right now, because on October 17th I finally finished my first novel. After writing 7 years on it, the adventure is about to begin. Just wanted to tell you, from reader to reader.
I hear you bro. It’s so hard to put up with those people but I feel if everyone learned to have a nice attitude towards the things they don’t like instead of spreading heat, such situations wouldn’t happen.
With every single point u made i was yelling "YES! THANK U! EXACTLY" hahaha. I especially loved the points about books being part of ur identity and getting u thru dark times or reminding u of happy memories. People totally trashing books forget how much they mean to us so just be respectful!
I am a bit older than some people here and I actually love to analyze books I read with friends and it's really fun to see how we all react differently to things. Someone is always saying "the book was sooo slooow" when someone thinks it was perfect, or when that first person is hyped, the second thinks the plot was erratic. We all have the things we are looking for, and everyone seems to pick up different things, up to the point that was the ending happy or sad. The problem arises when there are a lot emotions involved, because when I feel that sort of blinding love towards a book or aspect of it, I tend to deep down know that it wasn't perfect, but I am not yet ready to see it in uglier light. Usually then the best way is to tell that you are feeling too emotionally attached to the book/main character/etc and let others know that pointing mistakes hurts, so they know to thread carefully. They can tell their opinion and review, but they know to soften the words and remember also to bring something positive to discussion. And, well, sometimes you just have to wait when the emotional connection isn't as strong, and then you are ready to listen even negative reviews; you can't force it, so just know your mind and listen to your feelings, and I always want to remind that you are allowed to like badly written books, problematic books and unpopular books: only you can decide what books you like, and not a single other person will have your experience while reading the same book.
This is so true though! I usually just act all shocked and offended, then just stare at the person intensely for the rest of the day in a joking sort of way, though, I love that we all have books we love and hate and I think its perfectly OK! My favourite series is hands down Miss Peregrine's, I'm still trying to make my friends get round to reading them!
aww, i love the memories of reading in odd places. most recently, autoboyography. i read it in four different stores. started in tmobile, then a department store, then walmart (i promise you people of walmart, i wasn't crazy), and then finished it in an asian supermarket. it was a real test of not showing emotions while reading the wonderful book.
I feel both sides of this. But we have to remember that everyone has different experiences that affect whether or not they like a certain books. Even if one person doesn’t like it, there are always a ton of people who did that you can celebrate with instead of being mean to the ones who didn’t 😊
Hi Jesse, thank you for making this video. Apart from opinions on books, the video very much relates to life in general - how to react in situations when people don’t agree with us or try to put us down by dissing our opinions just because they think they have more superior experiences . At the end of the day, it’s just their opinions, not facts. This video illustrates how a shift in ones’s thinking and can change the way we see perceive an issue and make us less upset. :)
I'm careful about recommending my favourites so I don't always - only when I know the other person will love them.. I have very few friends who love reading. I'm glad that my non-reader friends sometimes listen to me express my love for books that I am reading LOL.. Am 70% in A Map of Days. I'm just so happy to be back in this series ♡
I needed this video. I get so heated when people talk shit about the Beautiful Creatures series because that book opened my eyes to the world of reading. I had hated reading my entire life. (I’m 22.) I thought books were boring and when I was younger I used to get headaches whenever I tried to read. And then a couple months ago I decided to read Beautiful Creatures after watching the movie and my entire life changed. I am now a full on obsessive reader. I’ve read 32 books ( most 300-450 pages ) since the beginning of August. The thing is now when I look through Beautiful Creatures I realize it wasn’t the most well written and there are a lot of issues but it’s still a very important series to me and I can’t stand seeing bad reviews about it. Lol
Jesse, you manage to make me smile every single time. Such a great video again! And about opinions on books, we all are individuals. It's no big deal at all if someone thinks differently. To be honest, I find it actually quite interesting to chat with someone who has a different opinion than I do. It is just important to remember the fact that we all love and hate different things. We have to try to express opinions wisely to make sure no one gets hurt or anything. Goes with any kind of opinions actually🤷
Yeah I know the feeling. There is this book that I grew up reading and loving. And I remember in elementary school, I gave it to one of my friends (force her to take it 😁). And then asked her how it was and she completely hated it. The memory breaks my heart even to this day 💔💔💔
My former best friend and I shared the love for books, it was one of the thing that really brought us so close. She always refused to read my favorite book series, she said that she didn't like and wasn't appealing for her, which I can understand. But the way she said she didn't like it really made me upset, I can easily take that you don't want to read a book, I have books that I surely don't even want to hold, but saying you surely don't like a book without even reading it, it's just a big no non for me, you have to experience something to say you didn't like it. On the other hand, I liked her favorite books but I wasn't head over heels with it, which hasn't changed. And then we basically had an argument so bad that now we don't even talk anymore, but that wasn't about books. My point is, you can dislike a book but you can't say you hate it before you read it. I love your videos, by the way, you always make me laugh and I just want your book collection. SO MANY BOOKS... WHY I AM SO POOR... WHY I DON'T HAVE SO MAY BOOKS... And nothing, I live in a 3 floor house with my family and we have books even in the bathroom... so yeah I have tons of books, just not the ones I want.... And I know it's trivia but, I just discover we share the birthday. When I saw it I way like: "Oh, didn't see that coming"
Everyone tells me i'm wrong with my opinions over a book. One i was badly trolled over was when i said i hated Katniss Everdean because she came across as a strong hunter but very weak in the actual hunger games as everyone else did stuff for her and she did very little, and then later on she was always drugged every other page for one reason or another. Yeah the hunger games wasn't bad but it's my opinion and i will respect yours.
I feel like I related to everything you talked about. My favorite book is Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. It helped to realize that I needed therapy and got me out of a dark time. I don't think I would've gotten into therapy without this book, so it probably saved my life. It was also the first book that made love reading again. A lot of people say the book isn't they were expecting, which I understand but I got something so much better than what I was expecting. It's hard not to angry at people who don’t like the book because the book represents me.
I agree with this vid so much. You are my fave booktuber and we normally agree on book opinions, but I have to admit I don't get the Peregrine love. For me, it was just OK. I didn't get the whole premise of it, so I didn't continue on with the second book. With that said, I do think it's great that you love it. :)
This is hilarious! I'm just glad you love Ransom rigg's book series! I was beginning to think I'm weird because not all like his series but whatever I loved it! it's the only series I was able to finish! Can't wait to read a map of days....
oh, yeah, I relate to this video. I love the stormlight archive series. and both my dad and my sister don't really want to read it much because they say it starts to slow! it's super annoying. but I don't care to much, because I just try and find others who like the book so I can talk to them about it.
This video can also apply to comics, movies, TV shows, music and video games (altho the last one can be a bit different, like if someone complains about bad gameplay mechanics, everyone would feel the same way because it would affect everyone)
Yes to all of this. Back in middle school and high school I used to get so offended when people didn’t like my favorite books. I spent half of seventh grade trying to convince my friend to read fantasy books because they were the best thing to ever happen to me, and I absolutely could not comprehend why he was completely uninterested. 😂😂😂 But over the years I began to understand the importance of listening to different points of view and looking at my favorite things from different perspectives. It challenges me to think more deeply about my favorite books, to acknowledge their flaws, and to become more sure of why I love them. This is also so helpful to me as a writer!
Am I the only person who noticed at 4:20 the books Cinder and Scarlet are switched around so that Scarlets in front...Scarlet is the second book Cinder is the first. I HAVE FOUND A FLAW!
I would say that most people dislike or hate my favorite book. It's been my favorite book since I was 9 (got it as a comic form first. Highlights magazine had the classics in hardback comic form) and Charles Dickens became my favorite author (and so many people hate him & his writing style) and A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite book. I just never let it bother me. But, when you grow up with avid readers who handled "haters" with class, you learn how to accept the fact that your book experiences are always different than others. It's just let it go because we are different. But, that's me and how I handle it...
I hate it when people hate on my favourite book ( Harry Potter ) when they haven't ever read it. I can understand after you have read a book and you decide that you really didn't enjoy it but knowing nothing about and hating on it is just wrong

This video was SOOOO accurate it hurts, it was also hilarious which is always a bonus. Fantastic video as always Jesse!
"Books are for reading, not for attacking book haters." Wise words, Jesse
Loving the positivity! Also loving the bloopers
This was the funniest thing ever and also so utterly true I love it
"Are you a care bear?" THE BEST QUESTION EVER 😂
I relate to reading in the bathroom too - the things we do for family.
The end was a BlackPink hahaha "hit them with that dru-dru-du" Love you Jessie. Always so relatable
The thumbnail sums it up nicely
When someone hates my favorite book I just breathe heavily. Sounds awkward cause i am awkward.
This is BookTube. I think we're all awkward here. XD
“Go away AWAY AWAY AWAY AWAY. YOU’RE CANCELLED.” This is SO accurate OH MY GOSH 😂😂
Can I just say I love how goofy you can be. It’s awesome. You book videos are very well done. Very creative. 😊
In that case ARE YOU A CARE BEAR?😂😂😂 THE BLOOPERS OMG😂😂
My Book Savior : Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
I was 12
aww, i love the memories of reading in odd places. most recently, autoboyography. i read it in four different stores. started in tmobile, then a department store, then walmart (i promise you people of walmart, i wasn't crazy), and then finished it in an asian supermarket. it was a real test of not showing emotions while reading the wonderful book.
I like that "different reading taste buds". :)
I love that your vids are relatable, humourous, and respectful! Thank you!
back again on Jesse is a beautiful and understanding human
I LOVE how you send these beautiful messages in your videos, in a funny and entertaining way ❤️
I laughed so hard at the end with the bloopers 😂. You should definetly start adding those to the end of your videos.
I read a lot befor my sister explored you. But until that moment I was not...realizing? truly enjoying? reading. Thank you 💚
OMG...you are so great!!! I loved how matured and deep you are as a reader! Looking forward of seeing more of your videos.. Good luck!
I loved your point of view on this topic. Reminded me to be more aware of how i put out my opinions.
“are you a carebear” I laughed my ass off at that one hahaha
"Are you a Care Bear?" 😂😂 This is honestly one of your best videos yet, Jesse!! Ohh, and those bloopers are everything 💙
My favorite two booktubers posting at the same time!!!!!
Sophie the Jedi Knight, who's your other favorite?
Second time this week I've been asked lol!
Hailey in Bookland. She was the first booktuber I ever watched and just has a special place in my heart
Sophie the Jedi Knight. lol. cool!
@@sophiemontecalvo7503 sameeee
You said something that actually counselled me a lot thank you!
i think that i feel so good after watching each one of your videos! thank you for being here to put me in a good mood :)
My current favorite book is actually a certain favorite of yours (Miss Peregrine's) which I was introduced to through you, so...thanks for that :)
I don't mind people criticizing ma favorite books, I just mind when the opinions are not objective or justified at all, I prefer balanced opinions :)
“If that’s the case, are you a Care Bear” I DIED 😂
I agree with this vid so much. You are my fave booktuber and we normally agree on book opinions, but I have to admit I don't get the Peregrine love. For me, it was just OK. I didn't get the whole premise of it, so I didn't continue on with the second book. With that said, I do think it's great that you love it. :)
"It's Just A Book"
Excuse me? This is my second life okay.
I'm actually 1:32 Jesse when someone says they don't like my fave book...but also the "go away you're canceled" 😂😂
Perfectly said ! This video is so on point and it does apply to everything not only books. Words of wisdom here. 😎
I've never gotten this excited since getting out of my reading slump!! 😂😊
I just started reading miss peregrines bla bla (such a long title aaaaah) and i love it.
Thanks for your attention.
Loved this vid!
thanks!
Sydney Garner but you didn’t watch it yet lol
You couldn't have described/said this any better
STOP BEING SUCH A MOOD😂😂😂😂
this video is so epic....the sound effects are so extra and i laughed soo hard ....keep doing an amazing job Jesse xoxo
I really like the way you talk about books, you get the book love passion 😁
Im reading a book called Yellow Dog and im LOVEING IT SO DAMN MUCH
Can we just appreciate that Jesse *actually* is able to chose a favourite book
"Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho brought me in the book world, and i still love it and talk to people about it
Am I the only person who noticed at 4:20 the books Cinder and Scarlet are switched around so that Scarlets in front...Scarlet is the second book Cinder is the first.
I HAVE FOUND A FLAW!
This video still holds up 😊💖
I feel ur pain Jess.
I always like to know what someone doesn't like. Fav convos to have as long as they don't sit there and drag me because they dislike the book.
I RAN OUT OF THINGS TO WATCH and then my favorite booktuber uploads. how am i so lucky???
Have you ever read 'The Heroes Of Olympus' series by 'Rick Riordan'
I would recommend it (also it's my favourite series sooooo)
Same
"Unless you love everything that you come in contact with...Well then are you a CARE BEAR?" Part of me just died😂😂😂
Jessie! I love the style of your vids but when you cut to a reaction the volume really goes up. Love ya!
