@@bejaysus7388 the point I was trying to make is that the lamb is likely to have been fed concentrates to accelerate it’s growth. Forcing them into early growth often means a short life. They took longer to reach their full growth potential but their influence on the flock was the same as rams that had been ‘ pushed’.
You should buy a Berrichon ram, they are easy lambed and fleshed. There is a couple of really good breeders in Scotland. We use them at home in Northern Ireland, we sold some Berrichon lambs on Saturday 23.2kg at £118
@@TheSheepGame they are the best kept secret in sheep farming. We use a texel ram as well and the Berrichon lamb is just as good if not better and you don't loose near as many at birth compared to the texel because of their big heads. Love theses videos. I am actually starting to recognize the different breeds of sheep! Those texels look fierce. Is that just a look or is it in their temperament as well?
Y'know, I have to agree with you and your wallet on that high bidding. It's tempting, but when you're trying to ultimately play a long game... that's a hard call indeed. And those rams a the end weren't fighting, Cammy. They were judging head-boy on who's hairstyle matched yours the closest! 😜
Buy a handful of bred older ewes. You can raise your own best rams then. I love my BFL crew and have great white and even better natural ram. You could also breed your best ewes to borrowed ram and save those ram lambs for following year rams.
What’s up with the orange wool? The dorsets are going to be teasers? Aww. My brother breeds purebred Dorsets and Southdowns in the states. Grew up with sheep. Really enjoying the channel!
Sometimes you can regret selling too low or buying too high, if you get a top class ram though they are always worth the price, rams are up 50% here on last yr at least.
The old adage buy low sell high is old because it’s wise! A lot of business went under here in the States during COVID because debt was too high. Lesson learned: don’t buy what you can’t afford even when the “experts” advise otherwise.
Those rams must spent hours in the gym or on steroids. I can understand why they bring good prices. Better to kick yourself for not buying rather than regretting a purchase. Best of luck for next auction 👍
Could u not keep back 2 ram lambs of your own and get them vecestmised instead of buying them in?? Thats what I do keep back the 2 lowest value bull calves and use them for teasers
Good to see this aspect of the market, Cammy. Another thing about the prospective teasers: ye need to balance the age and the experience of the ram to get the best number of teasing years out of them. On the conversions to teaser, will Kaz be doing the honours? And how do ye prepare them to do the best teasing possible? Thank you!
Hi Harry, I always use Kaz for the advice but he’s a couple hours away so it will be a local vet 😁. These boys are 2 shear so seem to have done the job 😁
I have to admit to something: try as I may, Texels seem very homely sheep to my eyes. You have to look twice to ensure they aren't a new type of pit bull. 😮
Well, as the saying goes, "You have to spend money to make money". It hurts the pocketbook upfront but in the end, you should see a return on your investment.
Do you do anything to improve your grazing land? Do you fertilize, over seed with grass that grows better in cool months, or is all just natural growth?
Hi Paul, all my ground is seasonal lets so i don’t have it for more than a year at a time. Makes it hard to justify spending money on the ground so all natural grass
Can you lease rams? I used to do a fair trade in leasing rams to smaller flocks, where purchasing a high quality ram wasn't profitable. Then once breeding season was complete, the leased ram would go straight to the butcher and be made into sausage as I couldn't have them back to my closed flock. In the end, I made more money than if I'd sold the ram only for breeding. Also I'm sure if you started a go fund me page, we viewers would be happy to give you a few bucks toward a good ram. You know so many breeders, now, can't you get a top older ram from someone you know, say 6 or 7 years old.
@@TheSheepGame Think about the go fund me page, Cammy. Many people, here, would happily support you with a few dollars and if even a quarter viewers gave 5 pounds you'd easily be competitive bidding at the auction.
@@vwvw4 i really appreciate that. Maybe one day i’ll have a chance at a farm or a bit of ground and I might need some help. Better keep that as an option for when i’m really stuck 😊
No need of vacisming good rams. Keep a few of your own in future. Slow growth lambs as exapain. Buy a blackie ram for lanark ewes so no pay on old ewes next year

Hopefully one day we get to that stage. It would be great 😁
I am sure these rams will make lovely lambs
Could you trade some shearing for a ram. It is a joy to watch your excitement at the sales. Thank you for sharing.
Sales are great days catching up with plenty of people especially now restrictions have eased a bit
Cammy, why not hold back a couple of your own ram lambs to make teasers? Seems like a lot to spend for the purpose.
I should have said Cornel that they were £150 each so about the price of a good fat lamb 👍
Really enjoyed this one Cammy, those BFL tups.. beauties! How are Lizzie and Jock? would love to see a pic.. to see how he's coming on.
Hi Margaret, I have a few pictures of Jock in his sheep romper you gave him, I could email them if you want?
@@lizzythomson4461 Yes please... would love that Thank You
Remember the old David Lee Roth song " I am just gigolo...."
What’s up with the orange wool? The dorsets are going to be teasers? Aww. My brother breeds purebred Dorsets and Southdowns in the states. Grew up with sheep. Really enjoying the channel!
Thanks Julie. The wool is dyed to hide any dirty marks of blemished in the wool. 😁
I was the same couldn't get the tups I was after this year
Aye was a wild trade this year Bob
Fair play with the charollais ram, will suit the ewe lambs.
Hopefully
Sometimes you can regret selling too low or buying too high, if you get a top class ram though they are always worth the price, rams are up 50% here on last yr at least.
Yeah and they are 50% of your lambs genetics so i understand the importance of a good one. I’ll learn 😁
The old adage buy low sell high is old because it’s wise! A lot of business went under here in the States during COVID because debt was too high. Lesson learned: don’t buy what you can’t afford even when the “experts” advise otherwise.
Thanks Jenny.
Good video Cammy, have you ever considered getting a couple of pure ewes and breeding your own tups?
Ach it’s a lot of work and u need good grass and sheds to do it well with texels 😅
I hope that Dorset is going to be used as a teaser 🤣😂
Those rams must spent hours in the gym or on steroids. I can understand why they bring good prices. Better to kick yourself for not buying rather than regretting a purchase. Best of luck for next auction 👍
Thank you! Yeah big strong rams!
Could u not keep back 2 ram lambs of your own and get them vecestmised instead of buying them in?? Thats what I do keep back the 2 lowest value bull calves and use them for teasers
Shocked me also, had to replay the video three times to be sure those were bought for and not using some other solution from your own flock.
Hi guys. I didn’t plan to buy them for that but they were £150 which isn’t much more than a prime lamb here just now 👍
Carbello is a gid farm
I know
the best =D
Good to see this aspect of the market, Cammy. Another thing about the prospective teasers: ye need to balance the age and the experience of the ram to get the best number of teasing years out of them. On the conversions to teaser, will Kaz be doing the honours? And how do ye prepare them to do the best teasing possible? Thank you!
Hi Harry, I always use Kaz for the advice but he’s a couple hours away so it will be a local vet 😁. These boys are 2 shear so seem to have done the job 😁
Wow some of them had very large danglers I’ve never looked at how big they are - serious question is it a better tup if it has larger danglers ?
Not really Trish. There is a size they should be and and larger or smaller than that can be a sign of problems 😁
I have a question. Why are some sheep yellow? I've never seen this before until recently.
I have to admit to something: try as I may, Texels seem very homely sheep to my eyes. You have to look twice to ensure they aren't a new type of pit bull. 😮
Buy a few good ewes, and one good ram, breed your own rams Bro
I loved the eyes on last one you loaded. Will you use him or have him cut?
The furry headed ones are the ones for cutting
Need 3 for a grand.
Is Jim giving you a couple quid for the advertising 😂😂
Well, as the saying goes, "You have to spend money to make money". It hurts the pocketbook upfront but in the end, you should see a return on your investment.
I know that’s why i tried for better rams but just didn’t have the bottle for that final bid 😅
What are Teasers?
Do you do anything to improve your grazing land? Do you fertilize, over seed with grass that grows better in cool months, or is all just natural growth?
Hi Paul, all my ground is seasonal lets so i don’t have it for more than a year at a time. Makes it hard to justify spending money on the ground so all natural grass
Catching up on videos. Why don't you keep the best of your ram lambs for breeding? It looks like you buy every year.
How many ladies can a tup service during a season?
A good shearling should manage 60+
So, no lease agreements for a ram for the season? Used to standing stallions so pretty different
I’m sure i’ll be able to sort something out
what do you put the Dorset rams on cam?
Can you lease rams? I used to do a fair trade in leasing rams to smaller flocks, where purchasing a high quality ram wasn't profitable. Then once breeding season was complete, the leased ram would go straight to the butcher and be made into sausage as I couldn't have them back to my closed flock. In the end, I made more money than if I'd sold the ram only for breeding. Also I'm sure if you started a go fund me page, we viewers would be happy to give you a few bucks toward a good ram. You know so many breeders, now, can't you get a top older ram from someone you know, say 6 or 7 years old.
It’s not common here because of the disease risks.
Buy a blackie ram for lanark ewes so no pay on old ewes next year
Hi Ian, i should have said they were £150 each 👍
10 lambs should be able to pay for their father
What means " a teaser " ?
It’s a ram that’s had a vasectomy. We use it to synchronise the ewes.
Why do I feel like this sales barn is more like a show barn?
Clearly these are spos to be top breeding rams. I guess it depends what you are after.
