Stumbled across this and wow, lots of information to ingest. Hoping that this tool can help me digest some data I have from AncestryDNA. I'm hoping this can help determine between a potential half-sibling or niece/nephew, wince the number of shared cM between those groups is similar.
Centimorgans by largest or total seem to be the main measure but what about "shared segments found for this comparison or "Pct SNPs are full identical, or Total Half-Match segments (HIR)"? Also what about tick boxes "Show only Full-Match (FIR) segments. Prevent Hard Breaks (default is to create hard breaks when distance between SNP's exceeds 500,000 base positions):"?

The first thing to do with GEDmatch and DNA is to 1. Ignore the haplogroup because it doesn't help you build our your family tree in any meaningful way. 2. When you understand these concepts, then review the GEDmatch tools in the order I explained in this video. I know genetic genealogy is daunting. Take your time. We are helping my cousin (adoptee) find his father. His mother was my mom sister. He found us on ancestry after she passed. Family said that the father was her Portuguese boyfriend, his DNA says otherwise. On ancestry 2 cousins from his father side have not answered our email. We are stuck in the search. Your next step would be to attempt to do living person research for the matches who won't respond. Sometimes you don't need a match to respond to use them in your research.
So in order to be able to group my matches with my maternal or paternal side,I have to already know one of them? The only person I know on GEDmatch is my brother. The next closest relative is a 3rd cousin. Is there a way around this?
If you know which line your 3rd cousin belongs to, that should help you, at least with some of your DNA matches. My wife has the same problem. She will actually start with the Leeds Chart to cluster her matches and then work to see if she can figure out that group. You just need to find one connection to start things rolling. I would recommend you stick with the Autosomal matches as few people have the x-DNA in their kits. With regard to finding your maternal line, there are several factors at play. 1. Your maternal DNA matches might not have added their DNA to GEDmatch. 2. Your maternal DNA matches have not taken DNA at all. 3. There are not enough descendants on your DNA line to take a test. With my small maternal dna pool in this line I'm clutching at straws. 26 in my generation, 8 in my mothers, her father an only child, his father the only male and 1 sister who had children: so a gene pool of only 37. I realize the difficulty I am facing but willing to try anything. I am at Ancestry, MyH, Gedmatch, FtDNA and soon to be 23&Me. When you key in that cM into the website tool dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4 You'll see that 3760 is just above the parent/child threshold. It's possible that the child's parents are related to each other so that they have more DNA to share with the child.
Can Explain or give us an example. I try the tool "Are your parents related" And it show me some graphic with red and some green... what those graphic means !!! Are they related or not ! you don't explain it in the video :(
You would find siblings and parents the same way you would if you weren't adopted. You would start with a Leeds Chart (which isn't a GEDmatch tool), and then start trying to figure out who is related to whom. You'd also go through the order of tools listed here. Zima is a little better. It was an anal gland removal, so a tough procedure to recover from. It will be quite some time before she is fully recovered. She gets her stitches out next week.

Recently watched your video "are You related to all those matches" and Andy said that population segments can be as large as thirty centimorgans in rare cases. I have a segment that seems likely from an Irish great-grandmother, but I share it as a triangulated segment with maybe twenty people, a number in Ireland. Also, the segment appears to possibly connected with another group of matches later on the same chromosome, also with some of the people located in Ireland. The connected segment is 60 or more centimorgans long. My question is, what kind of segment is this likely to be? Since it is with a large number of people as a triangulated match, around 30 centimorgans, and others in Ireland show up around 30 later on the segment, could this be a population segment or more recent ancestor?
Either or both. Ireland has a rather small mostly homogenous population so there is the possibility that you could have even larger population level segments.
Completely used the Are Your Parents Related tool as soon as I got on GEDmatch since there are Sawyers on both my paternal and my maternal side. (allegedly -- now questioning that name on my Mom's side, since I haven't found any matches or matches of matches on that side.)

What tools should you use if you don't have the DNA of neither parent. My husband doesn't know who his father is he found out that he was adopted at 70 years old and his mother wouldn't tell him who his father was.
Suggest you try a Y37 DNA test with FTDNA. I used this to prove my great grandfather changed his surname to Thomas - from the paternal line name of Styles. The test will not identify your husband's father, but it will likely point you in the right direction. If you can identify the correct surname to research, it will save a huge amount of time. Once you have the correct surname you can focus in through the autosomal tests on Gedmatch. Good luck.

No. You need both parents to use that tool. You're in the camp with my wife - both of her parents were deceased before these tests became available. So she can't use it at all.
I think it would only capture about 2nd to 3rd cousins, further back in time it may not show on your DNA. Edit: The result does not show you the estimate about the relationship of your parents, it only says: "This analysis indicates that your parents are probably related within the last several generations."
When I click on the tools page for the one to many Beta version there is a list of things that needs to be filled out along a bar on the screen. Example: Select, Kit, Name, email, GED Wiki Tree ect.....I have no idea where to find that information nedless to say all of the blanks that need numbers. I need names! This site is too complicated for the average novice. Ancestry is much easier.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Just watched it. We have endogamy in South Africa and I have observed those little pieces like confetti of DNA in some of my matches. But we have something different. For our population most of the time a particular name has only one progenitor. So e.g..If I see a particular family name 90% of the time I can trace that name all the,way back to the original progenitor. My solution to the aggravating mess is once I am at 5th grandparent I don't bother. Because at that point I start sharing a ridiculous amount of grandparents and I lose patience. :)
my dad is my third cousin as well. 😂 I knew it as a fact too. my sister is maried to my dads cousin. my nephews are my cousins. they are cousin to their own mom as I am cousin with my dad.
We adopted five boys. Three of whom I believe I am related to. Their grandmother stated that she was always taught that my great-grandfather was her cousin. I had the oldest tested on Ancestry. No match between me or any of my close relatives. Now, he did match a 5th cousin on my mother's side. He also matched a person who might be related to my husband, but no match to my bio daughter. I ran the one-to-one autosomal tool. It showed a low match at 3.8 on some segments. Does this mean that we are in fact distant cousins or we have some general DNA markers because we are both African-Americans?
It's entirely possible. I want to be sure you're following all the adoptee research steps before tackling the "Am I related to him?" question. If you are from an endogamous family this does not work. You will be related to cousins on both sides several times especially if your ancestors married neighbors.

When you find out how a DNA match is related to you, then you use that information to discover how more people are related.

The other kit numbers are often found on Match Tools such as One-to-One or One-to-Many and so forth.

They have been doing updates to the website so maybe it is a glitch in their coding. I would report that to GEDmatch.

Wow, I have exactly 0 matches in the One-Too-Many. Bummer. Guess it's not that many.
That's possible. Remember, not everyone has transferred their DNA tests to GEDMatch.

We adopted five boys. Three of whom I believe I am related to. Their grandmother stated that she was always taught that my great-grandfather was her cousin. I had the oldest tested on Ancestry. No match between me or any of my close relatives. Now, he did match a 5th cousin on my mother's side. He also matched a person who might be related to my husband, but no match to my bio daughter. I ran the one-to-one autosomal tool. It showed a low match at 3.8 on some segments. Does this mean that we are in fact distant cousins or we have some general DNA markers because we are both African-Americans?
It's entirely possible. I want to be sure you're following all the adoptee research steps before tackling the "Am I related to him?" question. I am trying to learn what I can. I found out that My FTDNA id German. I hope some one will find relatives to my DNA. They said I may be from Normand, across Germany north of UK and around Ireland Maybe. I am retired and live in Fresno, California and have been in this Valley all my Live. I was in Local-3 Operating Engeers and was a heavy equipment operator for 33 years. I have amess of Grand kids. I am back to my #5GGF&M Peter Young and Katherine Tutterow m 1802 Rowan Co., NC. If you are from an endogamous family this does not work. You will be related to cousins on both sides several times especially if your ancestors married neighbors.

Gedmatch seems clunky & limited of free tools.
GEDmatch is not for the new genetic genealogy. That's true.
Most of my results lead to the Bamoun and the Fulani People.
