Dr. Biji Bahuleyan is a highly experienced senior neurosurgeon and spine surgeon with over 21 years of clinical and research experience. He obtained his MBBS from T.D Medical College, Alleppey in 1995, and then completed a five-year neurosurgery training program at the prestigious Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India in 2005. Dr. Biji subsequently served as a consultant neurosurgeon at Christian Medical College, Vellore for two years before joining the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum, India in 2007. At SCTIMST, he worked as a cerebrovascular and skull base fellow before becoming a consultant neurosurgeon. Dr. Biji is known for his work as an epilepsy surgeon, and he contributed to the epilepsy treatment program at SCTIMST, which is considered one of the most reputable in Asia.
Dr. Biji's expertise extends to various subspecialties in neurosurgery, as evidenced by his completion of four fellowships from well-known universities in the United States. These fellowships include Spine surgery (Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA); Minimally invasive neurosurgery (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH); Neurosurgical oncology, Functional neurosurgery, and pain management (Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH). Dr. Biji has published numerous articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals, including cover illustrations, and has also authored textbook chapters, including a notable one in "Benzel's Spine Surgery," a well-known textbook of spine surgery.
Dr. Biji has designed four new minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical approaches for the treatment of patients with intractable epilepsy during his minimally invasive fellowship in the US, which were published in journals and won several awards. Michael Gaab, a pioneer in neuro endoscopy from Hannover, Germany, has written a three-page commentary article in the journal "World Neurosurgery" on Dr. Biji's endoscopic work.
Dr. Biji is trained in treating all common neurosurgical disorders, including brain and spine injury, brain and spine tumors, hydrocephalus, etc. However, his unique areas of expertise include epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation, placement of spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pain pumps for patients with chronic pain from spinal disorders and cancer pain, and intrathecal baclofen pumps for the treatment of spasticity.
Dr. Biji has served as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at KIMS hospital Trivandrum, where he was the academic coordinator for the DNB neurosurgery program, after returning from the US in 2015.
