    Damn, I am in love. Thank you for creating this! Makes me understand myself way better. Also explains why I used to shut down and go "numb" when my parents/SO's would start a fight. I feared saying things I would later regret.... I'm glad I now know that setting boundries and voicing my opinions is not destructive.

      I had to intervene more than ones in a fight. I would go numb, cry but something inside me had enough and now I am able to stand up and put into the argument instantly.
      I don't know what it is. But I don't yell, scream, hit things or throw things. But people listen to me when I had enough all I have to do is raise my voice once or give them the look.

    I just discovered your videos yesterday, and saved this one for last. I'm a Nine, and wanted to experience the richness on display with the other eight types before delving into my own. Such wondrous variety you've presented!
    Thank you very much for creating these, and giving so much of yourself through these varied characters. I am so looking forward to your next project.
    My heart swelled to see Frodo Baggins and Fred Rogers. Such shining examples of rich, nuanced characters struggling on their journeys and helping us on our own.
    Also delighted that The Dude is in here. He may not be the best role model, but damn if he isn't relatable!

      But seriously, it's very gratifying to hear you say that! My hope with this series is that people will be able to use these videos to better understand themselves and those around them.
      Next I'm planning to do some "case study" videos where I dive deeper into individual characters, so stay tuned for that!

    There's something deeply unsettling about having your own head cracked open and revealed in intimate detail on a youtube video. I was looking up Enneagram types to help with building characters in a story I'm writing and after hitting this one I feel strangely vulnerable and exposed lol.

      There are things in every Type that everyone can relate to. But one should, more or less, stand out for you above the rest.
      For whatever it’s worth, I’ve heard many places that if you can’t identify with a specific Type, there’s a good chance you’re a Six or Nine. That’s not a hard rule but might be a good place to start. Check out the Type Descriptions on the Enneagram Institute website…
      www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-6
      www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-9
      Also (and this is purely anecdotal) I’ve personally known a couple people who claimed to “identify with all the Types”, but I would bet the lives of my children that they’re Fives. There’s something in them that wants more data, or that has a harder time “personally” connecting with only one specific Type. That may not be you, just throwing it out there.

    Felt super indentified with the reasons behind our actions along the video, and realisiing the growth I´ve done so far,; it´s nice to finally have something that makes me feel undestood just as much as I love giving that feeling.

      What If is one of my favorites (Fool’s Gold FTW!). And Frodo is fo sho a Nine! No plans to do celebrities, but I do want to do some case study videos taking deeper dives into specific characters.

      Frodo seems like a 6 as this is 9's stress path.

    • @miriamhodges5632
      @miriamhodges5632 2 года назад

      @@brianjoubert5241 I don't understand how this can be when Samwise is one of the most obvious 6's I've ever seen portrayed in literature. He's loyal to fault, somewhat paranoid, prepared for everything, sees things as quite black and white, and fits into the general 6 mindset very well. Frodo, meanwhile, is a much more passive person-calm, wise, observing nuance, and longing for peace. He does not initiate the quest to destroy the ring-in fact, he sits on the knowledge that he may possess a ring of power for about 17 years without doing anything. I can't imagine any 6 could do that without going insane imagining what might happen while such an object was in their possession. Frodo did not. In the council determining who was to take the ring, it was only when he saw how much strife it was causing that he stepped forward to take the burden, so as to end the conflict and bring peace not only to the council, but to the whole of Middle Earth. It was Frodo who had compassion for Gollum, trusted him somewhat, and was charitable to him (meanwhile Samwise, a textbook 6, slept with one eye open, and constantly made his distrust known to Gollum). I could think of more examples all day, but I think the strongest proof against Frodo being a 6 is to look at Samwise, and then compare the two.

    • @brianjoubert5241
      @brianjoubert5241 2 года назад +2

      @@miriamhodges5632 I didn't explain myself properly. Frodo is definitely a 9. That much is obvious to me, being a 9 myself. What I was saying is that I think the reason why people mistake him for a 6 is due to the fact that 9's become 6-like when under stress. 😊

    My family convinced me that I was a difficult child who grew into a difficult adult. I was actually a slightly autistic firstborn with some health problems and clueless parents who grew up in a chaotic environment and I was accused of being difficult any time I didn't immediately cave to what the adults (of which I had at least 5 around trying to control me at any given time, not counting teachers). Because of this, I had to learn how to be water. You go with the flow, but you carve your own course through the landscape by sheer stubborn determination. And while I love the description of a type 9 having a volcanic temper, I usually liken an outburst to a tsunami... it builds up after the triggering event, smashes into anything that gets in the way, and is slow to dissipate and almost impossible to prevent once triggered.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  День назад

      That's a great analogy! Actually both of them. The idea of the 9 as water... going with the flow, able to fit into whatever shape it needs, but also grinding down the landscape slowly over time and then "tsunami smashing" after a triggering event. Thanks for sharing!

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  2 года назад

      "Tests" are a good way to get you pointed in the general direction, to narrow down the options. But I wouldn't rely on one specific result as the Gospel Truth of your Type. What I generally recommend is that people take their top rankings and review the full Type overviews for each one. Personally I like the Type Descriptions on the Enneagram Institute website.

    I'm a small group discussion leader in a "School Of The Heart". We use the enneagram (Road Back to You) along with other books and topics to investigate emotions, attachment styles, how to grow, etc. I'm recommending your videos to our class :)
    I'm very curious, what type are you??

      @TypeCast  3 года назад +3

      I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed the series! Stay tuned for Round 2, I’m working on it now.
      I’m a One. It’s funny, I actually didn’t connect much with Ian Cron’s the road back to you (although I did use it in the videos) because he focuses more on the one as perfectionist, and I much more identify with the one as reformer. Figuring out that I’m a sexual subtype and not self-preservation as I previously thought helped clarify that for me.

    I feel like Chidi is more of a 5 or 6

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  3 года назад +4

      Chidi is one of those fictional characters that has the traits of many different types. Those clips I used worked well in the Nine video, but I could just as easily use clips of him in the next Five or Six video. Personally, I think Leslie Knope from parks and rec is another character like that. Is she a one, or a two, or three? Yes.
      Certainly some the characters are unambiguously one Type (Javert, Umbridge, Annie Wilkes from Misery, Frank TJ Mackie from Magnolia, etc...), but as I’ve been doing this series and talking to different people about different characters, so much of them act like a Rorschach test. I’ve had people make suggestions for certain characters as certain Types that, in my opinion, are *clearly* something else (I'll fight to the death that Hermione is a One, Michael Scott is a Two, Ron Swanson is a Five... although I love to argue about almost anything).
      At least for this series, the character's "actual" Type isn't all that relevant (although I think most of them align more or less where they should be). It's more about giving a general "flavor" of what each Type is all about. The biggest example is that I used a George Costanza clip (clearly a Six) in the Three video. "It's not a lie if you believe it" is, to me, the quintessence of an unhealthy Three and was just too perfect not to use. Don't worry though, George pops up again in the Six video where he's supposed to be.

    As a 9 and a writer, I agree with everyone here except Chidi. Saying Chidi is a 9 is baffling to me.
    Yes, 9s can be indecisive, but it's because they don't care about the outcome (or rather, they convince themselves they don't). It's the "I'm good with whatever" mentality. They can get anxious when you pressure them to make a choice, but it's because you're introducing unwanted conflict. They're trying to avoid unrest by being easy going, so when you insist there is still a problem, they freak out. But, importantly, they're not actually freaking out over the decision itself because they still don't care about the outcome.
    Chidi cares very much about the outcome. He is indecisive because he believes there is an objectively right choice. And if there's a right choice, but he picks the wrong one, who knows what terrible things might happen? That fear drives Chidi through the majority of the series which makes me believe he's a head type.
    Specifically, I think he's a 5. He certainly fits the stereotype of the well-learned scholar who struggles to express deeper emotions, but more importantly, he operates on a theory of everything. They dive into this in the season 4 episode "The Answer." The conclusion of that episode--the conclusion of his whole character arc--is him telling himself "there is no 'answer,' but Elanor is the answer." That is a pure-blooded, quintessential type 5 moral: accept that you know nothing and embrace the people you love.
    If Chidi is a gut type, I'm willing to hear the argument that he's a 1 (given his drive to do what's right), but he is certainly not a 9

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  12 дней назад +1

      That's a very compelling case! One thing to keep in mind is that this channel isn't actually about typing individual characters. It's about using select "moments" from movies and TV, combined with corresponding quotes from Enneagram literature, to paint an overall picture of what each Type looks like. In the very first version of these videos I didn't even include the film/character identifier, but I kept getting people asking me, "Who was that character? What movie was that?"
      There are places in these videos where I've intentionally used the "wrong" character/Type in a given video, because that individual moment works so well for another Type. Like in my Three video, I used a clip of George Costanza (who is absolutely a Six) because that moment is such a perfect encapsulation of the shadow side of a Three ("It's not a lie... if you believe it").
      With Chidi specifically I think he's a good example of a fictional character that displays personality traits in weird combinations that a real human would likely never have. As you say, he is very concerned with doing what's right, but I think he's way too indecisive to be a One (of course I'm biased as a One myself). Five is a definite possibility, but I'm not sure that most Fives would obsess over the ethics of their actions to the degree that he does. Not to say that Fives aren't ethical, but their obsession would be more directed at the theoretical side. That's often the struggle for (unhealthy) Fives... get your brain out of the book, out of the theory, and *do* something productive with it in the world. So Chidi is this kind of weird Five/One/Nine hybrid (in my opinion). To that point, I bet I could make separate Chidi-only videos for each of those Types, using the same clips but different Enneagram quotes, and they'd all make sense. I'd argue that Leslie Knope from Park & Rec is a similar kind of amalgamation character.
      Anyway thanks for watching, and for the great Chidi insights!

    • @creativeoj
      @creativeoj 9 дней назад

      I suppose these videos are for learning first and foremost. From that perspective, that quiet, confident decisiveness Chidi displays near the end of the series absolutely showcases a healthy 9 attitude. I'd still argue his specific flavor of indecision is not really 9 coded, but he does often struggle to keep the peace which is 9's strongest character trait.
      I think tri-typing might fit Chidi well. 5/1/2, perhaps? I like tri-typing because it allows us to acknowledge all three instincts and show a more complete picture of a person's actions. Of course, it doesn't *really* help in this situation since we're arguing between two gut types. 😅
      Excellent video, by the way. Forgot to mention that before

      In short, Fours are striving to feel unique/special. They have deep feelings and can be perceived as melancholy/morose, but they help bring a creativity and authenticity to the world. Fives are striving to feel detached. They want more data and can be perceived as emotional/physically distant, but their detachment can also bring an objectivity and clarity to the world.

    Since reality is based on each individual perception of each individual human ,and because each human is different it would be impossible to actually quantify a "general reality".. The ravings of a schizophrenic may seem completely unreal to others but to the schizophrenic it is reality. And because there are no preset levels of importance, we create our own ideas of it by placing our own values on what we decide to judge. A standard of relative importance does not exist and our value systems are usually based on our own physical needs which is usually what we refer to as reality.

    Oof, I feel triggered by some of these. I think that when it comes to type 9s, 'sloth' does not necessarily relate to laziness (or at least not exclusively). We can effectively 'fall asleep' to our own wants and desires; to our own needs, because it is our natural inclination to put the needs of others before our own. That can be noble, right? Yea, but it can come at a cost.
    Being asked: "what do you want?" - blinks, considers... what do I want? I mean, really...? 🤔
    Express yourself! For me, this depends on who I'm with. There are different versions of me: when I'm at work, when I'm with family or friends, when I'm alone. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be fully, authentically myself regardless. How cathartic would that be? But also, how oddly terrifying!
    I've often related to Frodo in that moment where everyone is arguing, to be like: oh ffs, I'll do it!
    I love how Walter Mitty develops as a character through this movie. He is in such a healthier place by the end of it.

      Good thoughts! To your point, the unhealthy nines I’ve known haven’t been lazy so much as they have been… non-persons. Like a ghost you could put your hand through. There but not really there. Really good video, and I love all the other enneagram videos you've made, but this is annoying me a lot: Chidi Anagonye as a type 9? That's just the most non-sense typing I've ever seen, Chidi is literally the most perfect example of a type 6. Like, the first example of Chidi that you put in the video literally shows the fear of type 6s and their distrust of their own ability and reality.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast  2 года назад +6

      Thanks!
      A great case can be made for Chidi as a Six, and I'm sure I could find Six quotes from Enneagram books to use over those same exact clips (and they'd work just as well). However, the "actual" Types of the characters in these clips are irrelevant. There's several places where I've purposely used a character in the "wrong" video (i.e. George Costanza in my first Three video, despite him being 100% a Six).
      This channel isn't about Typing specific characters. It's about using individual clips/scenes to paint an overall picture of what each Type is all about. I only put the labels (film/character names) at the front of each clip for the benefit of people who aren't familiar with them. When I originally conceived of this project, it was going to be just straight clips... no graphics of any kind. Then a bunch of people I showed it to all said some version of, "What was the character in that one clip? I've never seen that film." So I added the labels.
      It's a Catch-22 situation for sure. It certainly gives the impression that I'm labeling specific characters as specific Types, but I'm not. I need to record a video as Intro for my channel explaining all that, lol.
