00:00 🤖 Professionals with experience in creative industries are generally less threatened by AI compared to those who are just starting out.
00:14 📷 AI is expected to excel at tasks like stock photography, making it more efficient but potentially impacting entry-level creative work.
01:12 🎥 Chris Do and guest Kevin Lau reminisce about their early days in the motion graphic industry and the impact of technology on their careers.
02:21 🏢 Kevin Lau currently works at a company called Motion, which has pivoted to focus on design and branding alongside its traditional role in theatrical advertising.
03:31 🖥 Motion is adapting to the changing landscape of advertising, recognizing the increasing importance of content creation for big tech brands.
06:32 🔄 The discussion shifts to the impact of generative AI on the creative process, comparing it to the early days of desktop tools in motion design.
10:11 🤖 Generative AI is seen as both a tool for accelerating creativity and a potential threat to traditional production roles, raising questions about job displacement.
11:06 📸 AI-powered tools in photography, like Adobe Sensei, can aid in tasks like image sorting and selection, demonstrating the potential benefits of AI in creative workflows.
14:25 ⚖ There's a balance between excitement for AI's potential and caution to ensure that creativity remains original and not overly reliant on generative processes.
15:41 🌐 The sentiment towards generative AI may vary based on one's level of experience and comfort in the creative industry, with established professionals being more open to its possibilities.
21:11 🧠 Chris and Kevin discuss the challenge of preparing young minds for an AI-augmented creative industry.
21:39 🖌 AI excels at synthesizing existing concepts, while human creativity often involves pushing against trends and creating something new.
23:41 📚 Creative people benefit from drawing inspiration from diverse sources rather than focusing solely on one area of expertise.
26:25 🌈 Exposure to a variety of artistic influences and an understanding of craftsmanship can enhance one's taste and design abilities.
28:55 🔄 Trends in design are cyclical, and understanding the history and context of design elements can lead to effective visual communication.
35:09 🧠 AI tools will likely become more integrated into the creative process, assisting with tasks like ideation, scriptwriting, and analysis.
38:25 💡 As technology advances, the focus may shift from creating to manufacturing and bringing tangible products and experiences to market.
40:44 🌟 Reflecting on a long career, it's important for creatives to maintain curiosity, avoid falling into routines, and remember their core values and journey.
42:19 🎨 Stay curious and don't lose sight of why you started in the creative industry.
43:02 🤝 Separate being an artist for hire from personal artistic projects to avoid burnout and maintain objectivity.
45:06 💡 Balance passion for work with the ability to detach emotionally to avoid burnout or becoming too invested in client feedback.
46:13 🔄 Embrace experience and taste as an aging creative to guide and mentor the newer generation in the industry.
47:36 🚀 Rapid-fire advice for new graduates entering the motion design space: Put in the work, be collaborative, and build a strong network.
52:13 🤝 Acknowledge the value of building relationships and friendships in art school, as they can open doors and lead to unexpected opportunities in the future.

I am captivated by Chris's science fiction vision and believe it is already manifesting. While the current interface is somewhat cumbersome and requires jumping around, advancements such as GPTs and API integrations suggest we are nearing a more streamlined experience. I wholeheartedly concur on the importance of having an eye for detail, refined taste, and an educational background in history, and theories of art and design.
For instance, consider my friend who has dedicated her career to the luxury industry. When she began using Midjourney, she produced extraordinary work, though she is not an artist by training. Her success is due to her extensive experience and industry knowledge, which allows her to craft precise prompts, call upon relevant references, and select the ideal images for subsequent iterations.
In my view, the quality of AI mirrors our own, as it encompasses our collective experiences and wisdom. I am intrigued by the notion of AI as a 'black box' that can deliver whatever we desire, provided we know the right way to ask.

It's funny in general how from one side there are many people that underestimate the power of AI from another many overestimate it and are scared of it :) great to hear some good perspective ^^

I was working on a pen & ink drawing and wanted to add some camels in the background. Spent an hour going through my clip art files looking for a reference image, gave up and went to AI and it spit an image out that was very very close to my original cli[p art image! My clip art cut outs have since been relocated to the garbage

Great discussion! I'd just like to add that one other benefit of generative AI is that it empowers creatives to be more prolific in their work. With generative AI in hand, grand visions can be brought to life on modest budgets by individual creatives or small creative teams. Personally, I think that's an amazing thing, because the world will have more cool stuff in it, making everyone's life experience much more fun.

A couple of things. Been in the creative industry since before digital. I was doing paste-up and mechanicals with an illustration degree from Parsons because the sci-fi illustration genre was so competitive I was barely getting by. In all the years I've been in the creative industry I've encountered agencies that are all about the money. Creativity and exceptional work were an afterthought. I'm already seeing corners cut with crappy AI... How long before the next generation has no idea what good art is? I'm seeing it happen before my eyes. Some AI art is absolute crap and it's being hailed in the comments as great stuff. When you critique it knowing the fundamentals of good painting and drawing, you get attacked... AI is going to dumb down using our own brains to better ourselves. How long before we're trained by AI to just accept bad ideas as good. It's already happening. I love putting pencil to paper. I don't want that to go away, where I'm just art directing an AI. AI hasn't come close to someone like Frank Frazetta and other artists that I admire. Yet every fan group for sci-fi fantasy is being mobbed with AI art with bad anatomy, etc... To the point, that's all we're seeing and these young people have no idea what really good art is. It's also going to take over some of the higher-thinking jobs, not because of being better but just because it saves time. It's already happening. Reality and the way we perceive the real world is being changed by AI Can we adjust to this? If you can't beat it join it. Sure. Will we love the automated world we live in? That's the real danger. I'll give you an example. When you watch some of the older sci-fi movies like Star Wars where everything wasn't digital. Some of the effects were superior to what has become the editing style of creating special effects in editing programs. Even some of the Marvel movies like the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie looked like it was edited in After Effects on top of some really bad set design. Horrible. Not to mention long shots where people had to act well are few and far between. That is a fact. People are forgetting about the analog world. What's the moral of the Story of John Henry? This rant is getting long so... 2nd thing, do any of you guys remember the program MacroMedia's Director? That's what I learned motion graphics on, then Flash...lol. Oh and ever read the book Dune and why they outlawed thinking machines? Because it makes people stupid when they think for you... I hope there's a Renaissance from this that will create a movement back to physical skills.

I believe there will be many that eventually move away from it but not yet and maybe not for a few years as AI is still 'evolving' but many will stick with it because it's quick, easy and cheap..
But some people will for sure stick to the old ways, but how many and who will support them? They will become vintage and maybe a whole thing on its own, maybe it will be sought after, maybe not. Who knows

Lyrics by Neil Peart by Rush. Think about this. What would happen if the grid went down? What would happen to the generation that grows up on AI if the grid went down. They would be absolutely lost without the skills to survive. The way I see it, very few elites will have administrative jobs. The rest of the dumbed-down world will be grunts or batteries. lol
    We've taken care of everything
The words you hear, the songs you sing

It's one for all and all for one
    We work together, common sons
Never need to wonder how or why
    [Chorus]
We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx

"Kind of", "sort of", "I guess", are filler words used excessively (like in first 5 mins of this conversation). 😢 A good way to overcome this is slow down, be ok with pauses. Speaking less # of words/minute.

I love AI but I HATE THIS ASPECT: AI is a HIRED PAID ART generator and the art created by AI allows the parent company to retain some type of royalty rights and percentage. YET a real life HIRED PAID ART generator doesn't by default get a royalty percentage or right from the art they generate. AI Already won over humans already.
