    The fact Gong Li learned that very advanced fan trick and spoke her lines with such emotion while not speaking English is incredible.

    I honestly am surprised they haven't tried to do a reboot. If they ever do, maybe set it a little farther in the past, to avoid the war. Eve in the book, though, they did have American's directly in the story,it still killed the charm of the story.

    Does anyone know why mameha never wore the geisha makeup? Was it because she was so successful and senior she didn’t have to?

    • @synarthrose
      @synarthrose 2 года назад +62

      Pretty much the reasons you gave, but there’s another reason that the book mentions. At some point in the book, around the time of her debut probably, Sayuri mentions that Mameha lent her a very pretty Kimono to wear, and she herself wore a fairly plain one. Sayuri then realized that Mameha was intentionally making herself casual so that more attention would be drawn to Sayuri. So that’s likely another reason she never wore the makeup.

      @synarthrose 2 года назад +34

      @@Agamemnon-w9x Yep, Mameha makes a point to tell Sayuri that the only reason she lives as comfortably as she does is because she has a Danna. She points it out as the main difference between herself and Hatsumomo; they're quite close in popularity, but Hatsumomo can't get out of her okiya because she doesn't have a danna. And if I remember correctly, she doesn't have a danna because she offended a mistress of a teahouse, whom then told every potential danna that Hatsumomo wasn't available.

    • @ItsJustSam-bk1mf
      @ItsJustSam-bk1mf 7 месяцев назад +4

      this is DEFINITELY not the case. At this point in the movie, though the creators do struggle to show the audience what position Sayuri is in, she is most likely a Maiko, which is a Geisha apprentice. You can tell this from the length of her obi. A courtesan would most likely tie her obi at the front, whether it is an Oiran or a lower ranking prostitute.

    Random question, but does anyone know how accurate the portrayal of this dance is?

    • @ItsJustSam-bk1mf
      @ItsJustSam-bk1mf 4 месяца назад +2

      It's really hard to dissect into pieces, but for the most part, this is pretty inaccurate to an actual Maiko's dancing. When Maiko dance, their movements are precise, but very gentle and often slow. There is also usually a lot of 'teasing' or grabbing of their kimono's sleeves, and yes they do dance with their fans, but the whole 'catching the fan mid flight' thing Sayuri did here is probably something Maiko nor Geiko (Geisha) do during their performance.

    • @ItsJustSam-bk1mf
      @ItsJustSam-bk1mf 4 месяца назад +1

      + additional detail, Sayuri is seen smiling a lot throughout her performance, and Maiko and Geiko usually are meant to keep a stoic expression like most traditional Japanese dancers are meant to

      last i checked, they DID. half the cast was taught just enough english to deliver thier lines. Correction: they were chineese, so having them play japaneese was..ironic on a couple of levels. but the lead actress and several of the others did have to learn english for the role..and to speak it with a japaneese instead of mandarin accent.

      The book itself is taboo and japanese actors risk damaging their careers if they attempt to act in such an inaccurate film.
