- This is part 2 of our Newbie mistake which cost us our awning arms when practicing for our RV Living Full Time in our Grand Design RV Solitude 310 GK. Grand Design Customer support was amazing. The provided all the the information we needed to DIY upgraded awning arms. Thank you Grand Design RV.
The "incident": I forgot to rewind my awning before leaving our campsite on our first trip in our Grand Design Solitude 310GK The first tree we came across ripped it off the side of the Fifth Wheel. This can be seen in part 1

The DIY: In this video I show how I replace the broken arms with upgraded ones and re-installed the Awning.
The awning is made by carefree of Colorado. The original awning is the Longitude model that was discontinued because of problems with its durability. The Longitude was replaced with the Compass model. I show the differences between the longitude and Compass models.
A special thank you to Grand Design RV for sending me the drawings of the construction of the RV. It really helped. www.granddesignrv.com/grand-d...

My goodness, what a great video. This is hands down the best video for this on the internet.
Thanks Cory, that was definitely a repair from the heart, after making such a stupid mistake, i felt it was important to share it and show how to just fix it and move on. I really appreciate the compliment, Larry
Whew..so glad you got it worked out! Part 1 was hard to watch! Lol.. Looks great! Awesome job guys! Blessings!
We are definitely going to make some mistakes, fix them and learn along the way
Thanks for showing the install. Great video and info.
Thanks for the feedback, still trying to improve my video shooting and Premiere editing skills
Thanks for showing the installation! Thanks for sharing!
Still working on my DIY technique, thanks for the comment
Nice work on the awning and the video! It looks perfect!
Thanks. Hubby does great work- make sure you watch part 1 if you haven't
Big thanks to Larry - I reached out to him last year asking about the part # for the arm kit, as we had ours destroyed in a storm on our GD 375RES. Long story short, I ordered them a few weeks ago and finally installed them yesterday. Using this video, I was under 2 hours from start to finish. Thanks Larry!
Larry read your email to him. That was really sweet of you. He was really surprised - maybe a bit of a tear? Its great to hear that a video of ours actually did what it was intended to do- help someone. I think Larry took twice as long to install our awning arms haha- but then he had to video the whole thing, too.
We try to make ourselves available for questions so Im glad we could help.
I bet you saved a bundle doing it yourself,
Alice
Such a helpful video! Thanks for sharing!
Fun Adventure Family thanks, it made me realized it is hard to repair something and film it at the same time!
Awesome repair. Very impressive. Looks like new. You're never know what happened.
Thanks. Hubby is amazing. There are just a few small holes we need to patch.
Another great video! Larry does such a wonderful job explaining but I pray we never need to use it!
Barb. Hey. Yes. He is awesome. Don’t tell him 🤣. If you do hurt your awning, call us. We can help. Alice
Excellent testimony of the product.
Thanks. 4 years with new arms with no problems
Thanks for this video. Just lost my rear Momentum awning to a leaning tree in my driveway. Looked exactly like yours after the tree hit. Wasn't sure how to proceed fixing until I saw this. BTW - the tree later experienced a sudden death.
😆 Tree often loses
But I’m glad we could help after the fact
Thanks for the video. Landscape mode....it's the future!
Dale Clay Dale, hi. We always appreciate feedback. We hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else, but if it does, doing it yourself can save you money. Thank you. Stay safe. (RV DMC) Alice
Nice work, fingers crossed I don’t need to come back and reference this in the future
Let's hope not. Thanks for commenting
I bet ya had to come back ...we always have to come back
Great video. I hope that I learned the most important thing….prevention!
Well, we just lost our awning - the threads holding it to the RV were very thin and ripped. The whole awning was a wreck.
We just ordered a new one - nothing we could do about this
@@DownsizingMakesCents Crum....Always something :(
Thanks for the video. I appreciate the details about he side arm attachment bolts/screws. I'm adding an awning over a slide and two large windows and the attachment hardware is my only concern. I've seen some installs with Molly rivets, but wasn't sure if they are needed or if lag bolts will be strong enough.
Molly rivets are strong, the reason I didn’t use them, I was afraid if I ever ripped the arm off again the entire side of the rv would go with it, too strong, my lag bolt are working well, just use. More attachment points. Larry
Great video guys! I searched long and hard to figure out exactly what the differences are between the Longitude and Compass arms. You presented a great comparison! Just out of curiosity, did you end up with any exposed Eternabond and the bottom edge of the arm assembly after trimming it off? My biggest concern with using the Compass arms is that it covers all of the original mounting points.
I still have parts of the eternabod exposed, I never got around to trimming it off. I sealed up the old holes with caulk and eternabond. Still sealed and firmly attached to the rv even though we have have some winds try to rip it off, haha. Larry
Thanks for sharing your repair. What year is your 310? The newer ones have a 2nd awning on the camp side on the slide out.
Bruce Murray Bruce, ours is a 2017. We are looking into adding a second awning. Thanks for coming by again. Alice and Larry
How about a list (with links) for all of the materials used (including the new arms)? Thanks for a great video! An unexpected wind storm got one of mine on my 2019 Grand Design...
The link for the arms is in the description. Larry will put links for a few more things. Thanks for asking. Alice
I have a 2019 Solitude 384GK is your awning an 18 footer ? If so I might order these arms as well, we had a wind storm. Needles to say I need new arms now 😔
I believe ours is about 20 feet. Replacing the arms should be easy if your tube and material did not get damaged. Larry
I need to make this same conversion. Grand Design told me that I must have spacers from Carefree to complete the job. Unfortunately they are back ordered. Did you need any spacers. If so, where do they go?
When we switched from Longitude to Compass, Larry didn’t need spacers, but not all the holes lined up. Larry covered the holes with Eternabond (it’s not pretty 😁).
This should be in the video.
We had a 2017 Solitude 310 GK so I don’t know if that makes a difference
Did your new arm come with a Motor I have to replace mine my motor is fine it’s the idler arm I have to replace seems that they are longitude I have to replace both
The new arms did come with a motor on the one side. Larry
Helped a bunch that tape i wonder if it similar to mastic tape which is very sticky and gummy for ac duct.
Much stickier. It’s permanent tape
@@DownsizingMakesCents man it was a little difficult to find my name brand until U tube mine are called carefree the replacements have been upgraded
I went to www.carid.com and did not find anything for rv’s. I have a Dometic 9100 power awning & am interested in the compass arms
Can you email us at larry@downsizingmakescents.com or message me on Instagram. We will try to find a good link to the arms we bought.
Nice video, our 2019 310GK arm on the front by the front cap bent all up in the wind and we are now going to need to do something to fix this. We had to tie this up to get home this weekend. Images m.mp-app.com/sps/Awning/
Mike, hi. In the video, Larry gives the name of the awning arms that we bought. Hopefully you can get stronger arms and fix it yourself. Good luck. Alice
