I saw it and actually said "magnificent" aloud.
No clip of Abe Simpson screaming "MATLOOOOOCK"? For shame, Matthew. For shame.
Old Man Yells at "BALOOON!"
I have an idea for a Fighter’s History 4:
The story is that Karnov has passed on, and his will dictates that a new tournament be held to determine the fate of his estate; winner takes the spoils.
Not only has the FH cast reunited, there are more participants too from games like Tattoo Assassins and Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty.
Real talk, a sound cue for the moment a player is about to enter their stun state is a great idea that not enough fighting games used.
You're not wrong, however maybe not THAT sound effect.
Fun fact: In Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu, which is the third game and it came out only in Japan for the Super Famicom, Chelnov from Atomic Runner is the final boss.
Someone should make an English Patch of it called "Chelnov's Revenge".
@@conradojavier7547 there is an english patch of it tho
@@sridrawings4510There is not, I have only seen a video of the story in English
Don’t forget Chelnov is unlockable in that game too, he has infinites
This game has some of the best death screams/noises of any video game. Mizoguchi sounds like he was hit by a cannon when he gets KOed.
He's always so extra. Makes sense for a character inspired by Momotaro from Sakigake!! Otokojuku
@@angelriverasantana7755 Shame they didn't base him after Edajima.
The character Ray, looks like Ryu if he went Super Saiyan.
17:13 Karnov can’t call out Balloon
Karnov: “Oh yes I can. BALLOON!!”
You mean ken with Terrys moves.
he looks more like ryuhi from HNK as a super saiyan than ryu or ken as a super saiyan
Part of the reason why Capcom didn't win the lawsuit over the original Fighters History is because Data East itself had already lost a lawsuit just like this one back in the 80s when it came to International Karate copying Karate Champ, as Data East had sued Epyx over it (& even initially won, only for it to be reversed via appeal), so Data East literally had legal record that what Capcom was arguing wouldn't hold up in court. Data East used its own legal loss in the 80s to help win in the 90s.
There were lots of Street Fighter 2 clones back in the day. It was the 90s, everyone wanted a slice of that pie. Another good exemple is Sonic. Almost every single company wanted to make a mascot with an atitude, edgy and cool.
Fighter's History was the first game in the series, and that's the one Capcom sued over. The SNES version is playable on Switch Online.
This is the sequel, and was originally released for the NEO GEO MVS. That version is available from Hamster as part of ACA NEO GEO.
The ARCADE version is also available on the Switch via the Data East “Johnny Turbo’s Arcade” version, available on the Nintendo eShop.
@@illustreightr2630 Apparently it got pulled from the eShop, alongside the other Johhny Turbo's Arcade games
i am surprised capcom didn't sued world heroes or other sf2 clone games
@@illustreightr2630 It was. All the Johnny Turbo's Arcade titles have been delisted.
@@sridrawings4510 All of those clones were JUST different enough to escape Capcom's wrath, though. Fighter's History flew too close to the sun.
When I was a kid, me and my dad ate at a small cafe in backwoods Texas and they had a Karnov's Revenge cab. With the volume cranked so loud everyone in the restaurant glared at me until I lost on purpose.
There’s a karnovs revenge cabinet? I thought it was only on Neo Geo and sega Saturn…
Matlok is named after Glenn Matlock, the original bassist for the Sex Pistols.
And Marstorius is based on Bruiser Brody.
Karnov seems to have been influenced by Abdullah the Butcher, at least the head scars and physique.
@@garethprice1878I’ve heard his balloon chest is fake, is that true?
Everybody remember's "Balooon", but nobody talks about Rey's "Big Potato".
Fighter's History introduced me to two things I will always be thankful for - Ryoko Kano and the image of her doing a prolonged submission hold on an ox. I love these games, man.
Abdullah the Butcher with balloon, that tech is wild
Never realized until now, but Zazie's Hell Driver might be a reference to the 1993 manga High School Iron Fist Legend: Tough, Which features an almost identical fighting move called the Hell Drop.
Karnov's Revenge is sick - one of the nuances regarding weakpoints is that you can change between standing and crouching stances during hitstun so you can try to shift your weakpoint out of the way of where an opponent's combo is hitting you.
The announcer of Fighters' History sticks out in my head.
"RYOKO WIIIIIIIIIIINS!!!!!!!!!!"
According to Yoshiki Okamoto, the lawsuit might have come about over an issue of provocation and spite. Supposedly during an expo, Fighter's History was on display, and some guy walked up to Capcom president Kenzo Tsujimoto, pointed at Fighter's History, and said "Are you really gonna let them get away with that?" And that seemingly ruffled Tsujimoto's feathers.
Interesting!
@@flophouseplays It is sort of hearsay, and Okamoto himself says as such, but given that he was the head of R&D at Capcom at the time, I'd say it has at least a bit of reliability behind it. If it's true, it goes to show that sometimes things just come down to personal beefs.
What an opp
The ultimate instigator
That’s their version. But I’ve always believed it was more like “Since we can’t stop SNK from keep making Street Fighter-type games since they have the creator of Street Fighter, let’s pick on that little guy to send a message to everyone.”
Whichever the case, too bad no one at Capcom played Karate Champ... or Chanbara... or Hiryu no Ken...
Easily the best fighting game where the ultimate boss is an ox.
The Ox fight is a Karate Champ reference.
You know what the world needs? A mugen that puts every animal from every fighting game into one roster.
Always balloon.
I know I'm going to age myself for saying this but that secret fight I think that might be a karate champ refrence, there is a bonus round in karate champ where you have to time punching a charging bull to stop it. It's possible seeing this and karate champ where Data East games.
it might also be a reference to Masutatsu Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Karate. Who used to fight bulls and breaking their horns with his bare hands to promote his Karate style.
Karnov's Revenge is the European version name, Fighter's History Dynamite is the title name for the USA and JPN versions, is funny that the second game (which is this one) the most famous one, the first one WAS the game that caused Capcom's failed lawsuit, and the 3rd game was a Super Famicom exclusive (yup, Japan only) and that 3rd game has a guest character from another Data East game as the final boss.
ok i'm glad that you said that it's "big tornado" because I thought Ray over here was going "bingo bango"
To get into the extra fight you must beat the game without losing a single round, but the game must be on the standard difficulty or higher.
Your world changes entirely when you learn that Karnov's fat is actually a big rubber suit that he wears.
for me this is fake news
Nah he's just magic
I don’t know if that’s true or not, I thought he put on the extra weight to use the move better, because he has this move in the original game too
So, the actual reason Capcom sued Data East over Fighters History is because the design documents for the first game had "SFII" written all over it. DECO referenced SFII directly during the game's development to try to emulate its feel. Of course, referencing another work is something very common and not really grounds for a plagiarism claim. Besides, if you're gonna copy something might as well copy from the best, no?
There's a snes version focused in mizoguchi like you said, the final boss is Chelnov from the arcade game Atomic Runner.
BALLOOOOOON~! 🎈
Karnov inflates like a balloon and Matt deflates instantly
I remember playing Karnov on the NES a lot and being so hyped when I saw him in this game
We need a new World Heroes.
That would be insane. It's been how many years since the last game? Jeez feels like a competition of Darkstalkers vs World Heroes. Which forgotten fighter may "wise from its gwave"
@@kadosho02 prefect has been released at 95..so yeah..its like .... 29 years from now on
@@sridrawings4510 been way too long. Maybe the original dev team felt, that with Perfect it was the definitive finale.
There's still a demand for a new World Heroes.
I miss Janne so much....😭
That city background in Ray’s stage looks incredible.
TRANSRATION STAFF
They must have been under a budget, and that happened. Or possibly very sleepy at the work station
Maybe it's supposed to be a joke on how a Japanese speaker might pronounce the word?
Broooo I laughed entirely too hard at this. I re-read the text to make sure it was fucking for real
3:32 I always felt like Ray played like the lost Bogard brother. Projectile, rush move, forward leaping kick that can vault projectiles...all from the Terry / Andy playbook.
I think Ryoko, also the others female judokas, are based on the manga character yawara, famous on the end of 80's in Japan
It's funny how much Data East tried to push Karnov as a character and it didn't go anywhere.
Nah, they just had fun slapping him everywhere for kicks.
They are weren’t just “pushing” Karnov, he was the face of the company. Maybe you know Data East for Robocop, in Japan it was Karnov.
True, but that dude does INSANE STUFF in this now fondly remembered game so they did something right
Karnov is in more Data East games than you think, might be cool to look for which games he’s in
Dude I would love to see Fighters History 3 but with crossovers from Data East's other properties. Give me a fighting game with the Bad Dudes, Joe & Mac, the wacky creatures from Trio the Punch and the adventurers from Wizard's Fire.
When he said Balloon, he gave me ptsd of the Spider Man 2 game of the balloon's kids.
Does anyone own Karnov since Data East is gone? He needs to make more appearances in games!
G-Mode does. They currently own most of the Data East stuff.
Karnov for smash unironically
The third game in the series is pretty good. I was always fascinated by the choice on the final boss (which I will not spoil), plus the hilarious cutscenes and endings
The SNES one, I assume
I like it too, it’s just held back by it’s lackluster cast
There's speculations Karnov is the father of WayForward's Shantae.
10:34 YES new flophouse files!
I'm really glad I discovered Karnov's Revenge. I didn't realize how much I needed a Data East flavored Street Fighter II in my life.
Baked Potato!!!
Matt, short version: please check out the Spin-off/Sequel Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu, check out the modes and etc.
Dynamite plays pretty good like you said, and then YES, the Mizoguchi spin-off on SNES is actually an EXCELLENT fighting game on SNES.
It takes a LOT of notes from Dynamite, down to its exact combos, speed, etc. Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu Fighter's HIstory 2 on SNES. It was japan only but it's still the earliest fighting game I can find that had "Combo Trial" "Training (with some data info)", "Tag Vs" mode, and a whole "story mode" similar to fighting games we'd see today doing the whole visual novel story mode with fights. It's genuinely a good game but just has some character exclusions unfortunately...No Ray. Sorry Matt.
OMG, the backgrounds in this game are amongst the best I've ever seen!!
I remember being a kid and playing X-Men: Next Dimensions on the Gamecube. Maybe Matt talked about it already, but I remember it not being that bad of a fighting game. The roster was decent. Combos were fun to pull off. The main story was short af, barely an hour long if you were any good at the game, but it had a few different endings depending on whether Wolverine, Magneto or Phoenix defeated the final boss. Unlockable characters included Betsy and Dark Phoenix. Pyro was an X Box exclusive. Had a lot of modes, including Survival, which I once broke by winning 200 straight matches one day. After the 200th win, the enemy character models suddenly started becoming just the grey skin they use to actually design the character models. I was suddenly fighting the Grey version of Havoc, or Psylocke lol.
I watch this video over and over again just to hear Matt dare Karnov not to BALL-OON, and Karnov responding by immediately BALL-OONing.
There are basically 4 games?
Fighters history
Fighters history dinamate/karnov revenge
Fighters history michotchi
And
Fatal fury vs fighters history
Yeah, Fatal Fury vs Fighter's History Dynamite is the weird outlier, but an official released product. Its not a fighter, per se, but its a beat-em-up that you could only play as either of Terry, Mai, or Mizoguchi with its own mechanics. It was released by G-Mode with permisson from SNK. Hopefully one of these days it could come back in some form considering the G-Mode Archives of titles that has since been released lately/previously on Switch and PC/Steam.
Never heard of this fourth one
You have to select Ray as it’s his fist that punches the TV in the very beginning and the game is called dynamite which is one of rays moves
I’m gonna have to research the third game as I never knew there was a third version as I thought this was the last version
Karnovs Revenge is such a good game, despite everything lol
Yeah
I always forget that this got a Sega Saturn release...and I imported half of my collection when I had one!!
I think either Ralf or Clark from King of Fighters has a DDT. But I haven't played any in a long while.
I was so pissed off when the teen pool hall got rid of Mortal Kombat 2 for Fighter's History... Until i finally got to play it. I love this game sooooooo much. It was my Street Fighter game. We had so much fun playing throught the single player game.
7:43 is that a hippo pallet swapped as a tiger?
This game is so sick, love playing Ryuko. They really need to add rollback and online to that whole backlog of arcade neo geo games
He's Andy AND Ken. That's perty kewl. Shout out Karnov NES.
Christie also has a floatover DDT in Tekken 5.
you had to be there. when Fighters History 1 came out, I think sf was on champion edition and initially FH was popular in the arcade. My Arcade had 2. BTW Fighters History was part 1 and KR was part 2. by the time KR came out, it was already a forgotten franchise. Also Kharnov originally had his own solo game in the arcadrs and on the NES
Karnov look like Mr. Heart from Fist of the North Star.
This is unironically my favorite fighting game of all time. Not sure if it's because of the music, the awfully generic and derivative roster, Karnov being the anti-mascot he's always been, or my weird affection for both Jean Pierre and Clown (the first charge characters I ever enjoyed playing as). But idc, I'm just happy I own a copy of this game for my Neo Geo MVS!
Oh and as for the stupid naming convention: the first game in this series is known worldwide as just "Fighter's History," while this sequel was called Fighter's History Dynamite in Japan and Karnov's Revenge in the west (tho there's some English language promos and posters that use the FHD name???). Either way, I definitely prefer FHD over KR.
Fairly certain I've seen some 1990s romhack where you can play this game and fight as a chicken and a dog. I swear to God I did not make this up, and this was in the arcades not a newer romhack people only played on PC
Reminder that Karnov is Shantae's dad
I'm guessing that "Marstorius" is the Japanese transliteration of "Marstrius". Also, not gonna lie, I played Fighter's History almost religiously in the arcades.
One stage being sunny and then being in a torrential downpour in the next round is pretty cool.
I was literally just playing this online ten minutes ago, unfortunately it’s a bit dead but the ones who are online are fun to play with, believe they have a discord too
Think this series is underrated, especially Karnov’s revenge, I think the Super Famicom exclusive Karnov’s revenge based around Mizoguchi is worth a look at
A bonus is that tournaments are fun to watch
Also I had no idea Feilin was in that game coming out!
A fighter i highly recommend is asuka 120% (either special on ps1 or limited on saturn, actually theyre all good just dont do final on ps1)
The first game in 1994 was the first fighting game to have clashing (and possibly down down inputs?) and the gameplay inspired french bread the devs of melty blood and possibly inspired guilty gear.
Youve actually played a game by the same devs, mad stalker, which has similar gameplay! (Also mad stalker has its own legacy, as one of the leads would go on to work at treasure and direct guardian heroes which also has similar gameplay)
Luke has a DDT in SF6!
WHAT A KNUCKLE BASH THAT WAS!!
Best DDT in video game remains Bane from Injustice 2. This loco luchador sent the opponent into the stratausphere with a burn effect on the descent.
Mr Matthew McMusculatur I remember being on holiday in Italy where they had the Simpsons arcade game, Street Fighter II, some kind of a shoot em up and ANOTHER FIGHTER
The characters were all based on star signs, and there was an old lady my mind wants to say was the Gemini, and she could turn into a younger version of herself
The sides had barriers but you could break them an expand the arena.
You know what I mean, play it on the channel, and I will put a crisp dollar bill unmarked in an envelope and slide it across the table towards you, eh
Ironically, DDT'ing a bull is the real world way of taking it down. And they say games arent realistic
While I could certainly see how Capcom would assume this was simply a Street Fighter knock-off at first glance, even just the character of Ray with his appearance and Crack Shoot-like wheel kick has me believing this has always been closer to a Fatal Fury knock-off instead.
Man, Ox really sold that DDT to get Ray over.
Gawd, I remember seeing an arcade of this game in a pizza hut many years ago.
It's so funny that the end credits say "transration team." Yes indeed, my friend, your transration was perfect.
Ray Mcdougall? Is Ray related to Khronen Mcdougall?
you mean Not-K9999 from KOF.
It's crazy obvious that Marstorius is Bruiser Brody.
Big Tornado! Big Tornado! *Double German!* hmm! Hmm!
I think Darun from SFEX also has a pretty sick DDT
I used to play the first KARNOV, such a weird sequel.
TRANSRATION STAFF in the end credits (21:45)?!?! :D :D :D
Used to like this game. My guy was Mizoguchi. I used to always call Ray's big tornado baked potato
The reason why a Capcom lost the lawsuit is because their characters are based on real fighters too so therefore they couldn't do nothing
The Fighter's History ruling was a good thing. Why? Because a Capcom victory might've had a chilling effect on fighting games on the whole, because a lot of similarities between Fighter's History and Street Fighter were generic moves and costumes that turn up in pretty much every fighting game.
It works like this: had Capcom beaten Data East, they would've been able to take aim at SNK, Sega, Namco, Midway, and anybody else who created a fighting game. Today we might not have KOF or Tekken had Capcom beaten Data East in court. If the decision had found Samchay to be too similar to Sagat, Capcom could've easily gone after Namco, claiming that Kazuya and Paul were too similar to Ryu and Ken.
Ironically, Capcom ripped off Sagat almost wholesale from a character called Reiba, a Muay Thai chap from the manga Karate Baka Ichidai. Google it if you don't believe me.
Ironically, Data East had already sued Epyx back in 1988 over the game World Karate Champion, which Data East argued infringed on their copyrights for Karate Champ. Data East lost that case for similar reasons...you simply cannot copyright gis and flying side kicks.
This is better than half of Capcom and SNK's fighters.
If you have the opportunity to pick a character from a game that has Karnov in it to use in your game, and you DON'T pick Karnov, you fucked up.
6:03, if you watched Star Trek VI, you'll know that not everyone keeps their genitals in the same place.
BBL Big balloon life.
As far as I can remember, CAPCOM actually sued Data East not for the sequel but for the original Fighters History.
Also they have been defeated in court 'cause they've tried to do a monopoly on fighting games genre overal, and that's a no-no))
Also also, I should say, if anything, Dynamite looks more like Fatal Fury rip off than a Street Fighter's one at least in some aspects^^
Never heard of this fighter and man I feel bad I hadn't I until now. So wild.
Game looks dope lol
The reflection of your skull logo during the intro is flipped horizontally. Immersion broken!
Having to hold a button prompt down for 2 seconds in a fighting game, that's preposterous. Anything can happen in 2 seconds LOL
Karnov's Revenge is technically the sequel. The original Fighters History was on SNES. (I know this because I have a copy for SNES.)
Actually the original is a Arcade game then the SNES port of original and the SNES exclusive 3rd Game.
nah...mizoguchi kiki ippatsu is the 2nd sequel to it while dynamite is updated version the 1st game..just like ssf2
@@sridrawings4510 lol I forgot your right
Playing this game always made me hungry. Nothing but screams of baked potato and pizza pizza pizza 😅
So is this game one of Karnov's many evil deeds which he had to repent for in the original game?
You should do one of these about POWER INSTINCT. it's an even more shameless SF2 rip-off, to the point of having several animation frames of several characters copied exactly the same as those in Street Fighter 2.
you mean the One with the Grandmas & a Magical Girl voiced by Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon's VA Kotono Mitsuishi herself.
@@conradojavier7547 YES! That one!
the characters looks more generic
