As an ex Ambo then para, I didn't ever see a cardiac arrest survive over 13 years of , until I used a defibrillator. Doctor Hershman and DR Nagel, You sirs are the TRUE HEROES along with Dr Pantridge of Ireland, are the true trail blazers. And Sirs, EVERY advanced life support patient that is saved in the whole world, should be thankful for your foresight and tenacity. I salute you.

Dr. Eugene Nagel is a true pioneer and hero to all of us paramedics. I am lucky to have followed in his footsteps as a former paramedic and now EMS Medical Director and Trauma Anesthesiologist!
Wow, what a blessing to see this. My father, Randy Boaz, was part of this amazing group of men. I can remember the excitement over the emergence of pre-hospital emergency care, back then. Mostly though, my fondest memories were of my Dad and my fire fighter family,at Station One. To the Billberry and McCullough families - if you see this, God bless you, I will never forget the times we shared!
I trained with a lot of these guys riding clinical hours and became and EMT in 1973 training at the Miami Dade Community College campus at Mount Sinai, and clinical hours at JMH in the ER
I was there in those days, as a Miami Fire fighter, having started in 1964. Randy Boaz was a Firefighter to look up to. Always willing to train anyone. We had some good men willing to go a step further than it was thought possible. I think it was the early 70's when most South Florida departments started calling themselves Fire-Rescue, although Metro Dade Fire had that name in the 60"s with 9 small stations (Now over 70 stations and called Miami Dade Fire) I continued doing this for 42 years, loving every day I worked and seeing some amazing medical advancement.
Thank you for this amazing documentary and more importantly thank you to our forefathers for paving the way to the fire service I'm proud to serve in today.
Thank you so Much for training, Firefighters into Paramedics, Its an Amazing field to be in These Days, even today, here in Ohio there is Many Years, Thank you for Saving lives, I hope and Pray they are able to stay in there Chosen field, because they do what they are trained to Do, To many life my self look up to you and all you do in saving Lives,
Wow, and it was these two doctors and their opistit here in LA County started what is now EMT / Permedic service, and it helped give birth to a little show called Emergency! Love from Marysville, California KMG 365
Thanks to the pioneers of modern EMS the Freedom House Ambulance service, Dr. Safar, Dr. Caroline, John Moon, and the other medics at Freedom House. It began in Pittsburg during the 1960s and was the first Paramedic service in the USA. They are responsible for many of the innovations in EMS today. American Sirens is a great book about Freedom House.
Freedom house was no more “Paramedics” than funeral homes who offered first aid training. Fire Department were doing CPR and Resus since the 40s and 50s. It’s woke bullshit to push the “Freedom House” paramedic line. Regardless they definitely didn’t do telemetry and defibrillation like Miami did.
Physician's need to return to be more involved in the training of EMT's and paramedics. The physicians need to impart with their skill and knowledge to the trainees . It has been fifty years and EMS is still treated like the rotten red-haired stepchild of medicine. EMS has been too inclusive there needs to be standards other than taking and passing the National Registry Test. Not everyone has the ability to be an EMT or a paramedic. I feel also the EMT Basic curriculum needs to be expanded upon. There needs to be more emphasis on patient assessment, pediatrics, medical problems and trauma. The paramedic should have to perform an internship with a paramedic crew to test their knowledge and how the react to emergency situations to make sure they are truly competent to be a paramedic. In my experience for every one competent paramedic there are a couple that shouldn't hold the certification. These doctors helped create a wonderful program but there still needs to be work to make it even better.
I 2OULD LOVE TO GET MY RED CROSS MASTERS HANDS ON AN EMT BASIC BOOK SO I HAVE SOMETHING TO SINK MY TEETH INTO FIRST AID GANGSTERSHIP IS IN MY BLOOD ONCE A FIRST AID GANGSTER ALWAYS A FIRST AID GANGSTER
@Johnny’s Bricks Freedom House did IVs, manually defibrillated, intubated, and administered medications. They were instructed by Dr. Safar and Caroline themselves. They were the first paramedics.

This is so freaking cool. I’m a cop and an EMT currently in medic school, and I’m just now learning about these guys ❤
Thanks for posting. I have this on DVD my father received a few years ago. He retired in 1982 and was one of the first. Russell Fiore. Thanks again!

Miami may have been one of the first but it was not the first. That title goes to Freedom House Ambulance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I LIKE THE CAPS THE FIREFIGHTERS WEAR WITH THEIR DRESS BLUES UNIFORMS THEY WEAR FOR FORMAL OCCASIONS
Amazing!!!
With all due respect I do believe it was Freedom House. Look on the bottom of your medic books, it’s Nancy Caroline which was started in 1967/1968
Correct. Freedom House in Pittsburgh, PA was the first. Anyone claiming otherwise is denying historical facts.

FREEDOM HOUSE brought me here.
WALKIE TALKIE IS THE MASTER OF CAT FIGHTS DO NOT GET IN THE MIDDLE OF A CAT FIGHT IF YOU DID THE 2 ORIGINAL CAT FIGHTERS AND GET TORE UP
Now medics have to tell Drs what to do!
I like using a straight blade how about you??
And that ladies and gentlemen that's how the GATEKEEPERS was formed
This was the first seed to start the Paramedic movement, until it spread from Florida to all around the country.
Now most Americans are within 5-7 minutes of a PARAMEDIC
