I haven't had a problem with this but one thing you could do is to make an approximate template for the cake(2d, rectangle, square, round, what ever shape you are using), use a piece of a paper, mark where you want the dowels to be. then use this template to mark the holes directly on the cake, just before you insert the supports, then cover with buttercream. Give your friend the template for the reference, so they know where approximately they can expect the dowels. Hope it make sense.Thanks.

I'd like to make a big cake for a friend's birthday party and I want to use straws for support but I don't know how to explain my friend how to cut the cake without getting straws in the slices since I won't be able to attend to the party. Hope you can answer. Thank you in advance!
