Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.
This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible.
She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.
But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Emmy winner Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken stars an extraordinary cast that includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ruby’s supportive dad, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson (Veep) as Ruby’s enthusiastic uncle and Blue Chapman (Council of Dads) as Ruby’s cool little brother.
Directed by Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods) and produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), with Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour) serving as co-director, the film features a comedic powerhouse supporting cast, including Emmy nominee Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Emmy nominee Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), RUclips Diamond creator Liza Koshy (Liza on Demand), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things) and Echo Kellum (Arrow).

I think Chelsea is sort of manipulating Ruby in this scene. She makes the mermaids seem sympathetic, then makes Ruby think they can change the war, and convinces her that if she gives Chelsea the trident, she'll make peace with the krakens and mermaids.
Edit: Guess what...I was right.
To be fair, based on what they said it was more Ruby suggesting the idea of fixing things. Chelsea has said she was satisfied and "everything is right with the world" now that they had each other. Ruby was the one who brought up the war and urged them to find a solution to it.
Evidence, please?
@@LabiLabi777the scene, also it’s an “I think” not an “I know and can back this up”
i think she does sympathize with Chelsea, but knows that she still needs to keep her goal in mind. Like a “we could’ve been friends” relationship.
1# I was hoping there was just a pinch of good in Chelsea. Deep down.
2# what's gaslight?
As cute as this scene is, it’s kind of bittersweet knowing that Chelsea is going to betray Ruby eventually.
At the ending when she says there is one way
That was Mega SUS
Maybe She got ruby to steal the trident of her grandmother or something like that?
Probably
EXACTLY!
Yep
And something tells, that her betrayal is not going to be a pretty picture.
I hope that Ruby’s friendship means enough to Chelsea that by the end of all of this and after her betrayal, they can still be friends.
That's why I think Chelsea is not the True villain of the movie because if you know DreamWorks has been releasing a lot of clips to a point they might as well just reveal the entire movie because all these clips are coming across a spoiler territory
@@animezilla4486 true. Then again another theory is that she and Ruby both want to destroy the trident, but they don’t know that the soul of the original mermaid who used it in the war is trapped within it, and maybe when Chelsea takes it, the trident’s wielder’s soul takes control of her mind in another attempt to destroy everything.
@@bricknwolf3333 that is also could be possible. But I am concerned because they're being so many clips from the movie that is kind of falling into spoiler territory
@@animezilla4486 maybe. Or maybe not. Again I’m just speculating theories.
@@bricknwolf3333 so am I speaking of theory what about that sailor that that was about to throw that bomb
I just hope there's more to it than just Chelsea manipulating Ruby, even though it's so obvious... They look so cute together, and Chelsea is so easy to sympathize with, although perhaps this is what the creators are trying to achieve
I hope that too. It would be nice if she turned out to be a red herring because the audiance is already expecting her to be the bad guy.
I'm hoping they go back to being friends by the end, maybe opening up a brighter future for Krakens and Mermaids
@@scorbunnystaralicia5589Even better Ruby finds Chelsea crying and after Chelsea reveals who she really is aside from being a bad guy Ruby would hug Chelsea, the two would shed tears and become best friends.
I think to a degree Chelsea perhaps wishes that she could be the big terrifying monster people think Ruby is.... (She's not being dishonest when she says "Being Normal is overrated" I think this exchange might be hinting at her underlying motivation.... I think she wants to be more like Ruby, and might be unhappy being automatically loved because "Pretty Mermaid".... I also wonder if perhaps the stakes are in fact Chelsea's life.... (She wants to be a big and powerful monster, but perhaps the means of achieving this goal puts her in danger, and since Ruby is supposed to be a guardian of all the creatures of the sea, she may end up having to save the villain... Though the Villain being high on power might not be so quick to give it up, even if that power is going to kill her...)
After years of attacking Disney for doing exactly that (poorly) while praising Dreamwork’s for having actual villains that would be a risk.
My prediction is that Chelsea genuinely bonds with Ruby but is eventually forced to steal the trident and goes mad with power- with the two managing to patch things up after the battle and working towards fixing the relationship between the two species. The way Chelsea looks at her when she says she feels like a freak feels too real and deliberate- I don’t think they wouldn’t put it in if they weren’t going to make Chelsea SOME degree of sympathetic.
I hope so. It would be fun.
Or a subtle light bulb moment of how to manipulate/betray Ruby.
How do we tell him?
@icecontrol1 He's not gonna like this, is he?
I watched the movie this week. You were wrong, but the movie was pretty good.
Chelsea and Ruby Might start out as besties, but something tells me that Chelsea’s gonna manipulate ruby!

The trailer sets up Chelsea as the villain but I am hoping the movie doesn’t go the obvious “mermaids are born evil” route because it is a terrible message to say you should not trust someone because of how they were born.
THIS! like what if a kid grew up in a family that stereotyped people of color? This movie can make matters worse if they go the "mermaids are Born evil" way.

*People after seeing Chelsea:* I hope she got some good inside her
I think people want villains and even villain redemptions that are good and compelling and not just there for some superficial reason
The thing with Chelsea is we KNOW she's the villain though. And they showed her fighting Ruby already. Obviously, they're not showing something because why would they just spoil the end fight of the movie like that? There has to be more to Chelsea then her just manipulating Ruby...
You mean sob story?
Well what we want is no twist villains, just actual villains again like Ursula, Scar, and Jafar
I think I know what happens next, I thought Chelsea would have her own trident but she actually has stolen Ruby’s grandma’s trident after planning to trick her into stealing it from her grandmother so the war could end but instead it becomes an act of betrayal when she turns into destroy everything and now Ruby has steal it back and save everyone
What you said about Chelsea stealing the trident kind've remainds me of the little mermaid or the little mermaid II

Maybe it wasn’t researched at all. Maybe it was from experience. Honestly though, as someone who dealt with toxic people before I could feel the manipulation but I could also feel what seemed like genuine sympathy. I’m not saying I’m right but that’s my experience

Welcome to Dramatic Irony: a type of Irony where you know what's gonna happen even though the main character won't.
Alright.... I'm starting to think Chelsea is not the main villain of the movie due to her interaction with Ruby
You thought wrong. It’s that generic. They know nuance isn’t safe for a kids movie.
Wrong, there’s a twist later on like the little mermaid counterpart
Of I end up being right about Ruby going good that would be awesome which would mean I would be like how I was right about the owl House ending happy and those two other things
To be fair while the trailer shows them fighting we don’t see Chelsea do anything evil.
@@achinthmurali5207well teaching kids that not everyone is who they portray themself to be isn't a bad thing.
These are my two theories on what Chelsea is evil and manipulates Ruby
1. Chelsea may look like a teenager but she is actually hundreds of years old (or as old as her grandma) and leader of the mermaids. She may be the last of her kind and she want to wipe out the last of the kraken royal family to turn the tide i the war
2. Chelsea is a teenager, but the daughter of the leader of the mermaids that Ruby’s grandmother slayed and she wants revenge for what she did to her family
Ok detective you are on to something
I mean if option 2 is the case, then I don't blame Chelsea, I would want to get revenge too
You’re really smart. I think the answer is 2
On twitter, a mexican post regarding Chelsea revealed that *SPOILERS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW*
She's the queen of the mermaids. Isn't she too young to be the queen already? Or maybe that first theory is right and she's older than what she looks.
@@Snekfan88 Where did you find it?, because I'm Mexican.
2:47 Chelsea’s backstory sounds a lot familiar to how Ruby felt having to hide her self who is truly is and the unseen conflict with her mother Agatha
2:07 I love how Ruby jumps out of the ocean and splashes like a Humpback Whale.
I hope that one day Ruby can redeem Chelsea. This interaction was actually quite heartwarming.
I don’t care if she’s secretly evil. Chelsea is just so cute!
Ikr? She is so cute and beautiful, I love her hair❤
Ok
There are some points Chelsea seems genuine and some that she is obviously manipulating Ruby. Like her main goal is to use Ruby but at the same time she kinda relates to her. I have a feeling the whole mermaids and Krakens has more to it than we know. And yes Chelsea is definitely manipulating Ruby. But there might be redemption. Also Ruby is so fricking adorable jesus Christ.
I have a feeling that Chelsea is a very good manipulator.
Why? It’s because in some of the clips like the parody of the little mermaid of DreamWorks it shows in one of her lines she says that “Ruby! I’m not evil I’m just pretty 😍 and misunderstood 😢” which sounds she’s trying to manipulate ruby. And Chelsea also talks about how she can possibly fix the war between mermaids and krakens which I theorized is by getting the trident.
So yea uh sorry if my analysis is kinda crappy lol and doesn’t make sense I just wanted to speak about it
Exactly, that is what im saying. The only reason people sympathize with Chelsea and not Ruby is because Chelsea is a Mermaid AND she's pretty, AND she looks like a human. I have not seen atleast 1 edit of THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THIS MOVIE LOL.
@@mysteryboness I don’t think that’s the only reason I think they genuinely believed her and saw her look of sympathy, which I guess is just a red herring. Question. How did you know Chelsea is evil from this scene alone?
@@achinthmurali5207 based on the trailers we’ve seen and the clips that were released, it’s obvious that Chelsea is evil
@@mysterybonessbut is Chelsea really evil we still don't know about this war between the krakens and the mermaid
@@animezilla4486 we actually do, the first trailer tells us that Krakens have been the protectors of the sea, while the mermaids are the complete opposite of that
This’s is like what happened with me real life when I used to have a childhood friend I know much until he and his friends betrayed and chased me away for no reason throwing everything we’ve been through together away. That’s why I always knew what I’ve been told, never trust anyone.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. But I would think the lesson is trust should be earned not given away.
Welp I experience that too you are not alone that's why I have trust issues
i'm surprisingly loving the clips i find of them so far!! chelsea and ruby seem to understand each other more than anyone, they understand each other's love for the sea and the need to hide because of their family history. seeing them be able to be themselves and enjoy each other's presence despite being on opposing sides is such a nice thing. i only hope that chelsea doesn't betray ruby, and they reconcile in the end.

“Hiding Is Surviving.” - Gilman Family Motto
Hey, that rhymes!
0:52 - that face of “understanding the sorrow” really got me. (Even though she’s a villain)
I just feel like this movie could have been something actually special if Chelsea wasn't faking it. It almost feels as if there is an earlier version of the script where she doesn't betray Ruby.
In the original script, Chelsea was a teenager who had a genuine friendship with a Ruby but she was still something of a toxic person. Not entirely just a little bit. It’s about how Ruby she’s Chelsea for what she is and where they go from there. That would’ve been a lot better than what we actually got.
The fact that there are people trying to say that "maybe chelsea isnt a villain and is being forced" just shows that dreamwork's point about people being dumb about liking evil mermaids its true lol. Because there are multiple people trying to say "well, maybe chelsea isnt the bad guy at all!" and that just proves dreamwork's point, that people are dumb and will always sympathy with the bad guy, even though theyre bad BECAUSE theyre bad. Chelsea isnt misunderstood, or hurt, you can be a bad guy without a tragic backstory.. shes obviously the bad guy based on the clips we've seen, and shes obviously trying to be sympathetic because that's what narcissists do to vunerable people. Its a manipulation tactic, she's obviously manipulating ruby into opening her shell for her so she can get the trident thingy. Not all villains need to be redeemed, sometimes a bad guy just wants to be bad, Some people just want to watch the world burn. and if you disagree about the fact that Chelsea is a villain, then youre literally proving Dreamwork's point💀
UPDATE: I decided to read some reviews about the film, apparently one said “And the main threat to maritime harmony are the mermaids. It’s a neat role reversal, to position the mermaids as the narcissistic mean girls of the sea, and one which might be seen as a sly subversion of the siren narrative of Disney’s recently released live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.” And apparently the entire story was in a hurry to be finished. There are a lot of reviews of the movie
Not only that, but Mermaid's are also called "Sirens" and Sirens were KNOWN to be evil. They were evil for FUN. They would literally use they sing to lure men to their DEATHS. So No, Chelsea cannot be redeemed. This is the jack horner effect. Both Chelsea and Jack are ireedemable monsters who dont even have tragic stories, they just do it for fun
What I don’t understand is how do you explain 0:52 or the somewhat honest dynamic. Are narcissists that good actors? And also how would anyone figure out Chelsea is evil without the trailers, description, or the fact she is a mermaid and her family told her mermaids are all evil?
While I do agree that Chelsea isn’t as innocent as people in the movie think, but I do feel like there is more to Chelsea than we as the audience thinks.
She’ll definitely play an antagonistic role but I don’t think she might be like a full on villain. For all we know, the villain could be someone yet to be introduced in the trailers or sneak peeks that would be some sort of plot twist
Shouldn't Big Jack Horner be enough to tide you over for the Winter? What we have here is a Manipulator out to steal a Trident, yet didn't account for the possibility of genuine friendship with the pawn.
@@achinthmurali5207 when it comes to narcissistism, they are EXTREMELY good actors and will do anything to paint you as the bad guy
Man now I wish she wasn’t evil 💀 she would’ve had a great plot line with the main character
If the movie were to get a sequel it’ll be cool to see a mermaid who just wants to be friends with the krakens, a bond like that could actually end the war (I haven’t watched the movie lol just small clips but it would be cool)
I don’t know if the movie will get a sequel. However, I heard that they were setting it up so that this movie gets a TV show. Problem is this movie is also said the bomb at the box office so it may not even get that.
If a TV show does come along, I would be curious to see if they do an episode that explores what kind of relationship the krakens have with selkies.

This already looks like a exciting movie with good characters and there are many possibilities and ways this could play out.
Chelsea could be tricking Ruby into being friends to get the trident to help the mermaids, but a part of me wants the friendship to be genuine between the two.
Or Chelsea and Ruby try to make peace between their races, but the elder generations won't listen and Chelsea gets pressured into stealing the trident and going against the krakens.
I feel like the tridents need to be destroyed in order for their to be peace between the mermaids and krakens.
Ruby and Chelsea Are Special, Unique, and Extraordinary in Their Own Way
Awww so cute and I’m happy to see a full picture of Chelsea as a mermaid since the rest of the clips and trailers didn’t show her full mermaid form
Personally I view Chelsea similar to Metroman. She put on the mermaid act but is secretly bored of it and deep down never really hates krakens or humans or view them as underneath her but also never really had anyone truly close to her because of her blind popularity and never really had a true choice in life aside from being a mermaid.
She may look she is gaslighting her but I think if ruby is able to get Chelsea to change they could be good friends. That my opinion though.
0:28 that's a look of I'm not your friend
İ know Chelsea is a villan and tricked Ruby. But she is pretty and sweet. She can be good friend to Ruby. They can balance each other.İ wanted Chelsea and Ruby be besties.I wish they put another villain :'(
How about Gordon Lighthouse?
I seriously hope it ends with Chelsea regretting her choice and patches things up with Ruby so they can be friends again, this dynamic is so cute
She's obviously gonna betray her, but I kinda wish she would redeem at the end
This scene makes me wish that Gordon Lighthouse was the villain instead of Chelsea.
I really loved Ruby's and Chelsea's friendship, I hope they can make up in a sequel or something ☹️
How about a sequel and a spin-off about Chelsea comes back as the bad guy but later turns into a good guy by saving the town from another threat that's worse, MUCH worse than mermaids and the krakens themselves.
The idea of Chelsea getting a redemption arc would be very similar to Megamind.
Siento que me va a encantar Chelsea por como deja ver una personalidad carismatica pero controladora algo que me deja con muchas espectatitvas ❤
Are they seriously having a fight at the climax?!
This scene makes me think they can really get along
I think that Chelsea was tired of hiding from the Krakens and ran away from her mom. Maybe they had strict rules and didn`t feel like she was any appreciation. When she got towards the land, she started to get lots of love and the power is going to her head while changing her personality in the long run thinking, "Yes I know I`m cool" But when she meets Ruby, she seemed different from the other Krakens than her family was telling her. Ruby`s family didn`t tell her about their history, because they wanted to go into hiding for some reason. When she meets Ruby, it was almost like for a split second what it meant to have a real friend and show real sympathy. Maybe she is forced to take the Tritan for her mom`s sake so the mermaids can go out of hiding and take revenge on the Kraken. But Chelsea could remember the good memories they had as friends and start to regret?
I feel like that something has something to do with that trident that Ruby's grandma has and we later see in possession of Chelsea who probably tricked Ruby and got it
I know that Chelsea is supposed to be the bad guy and is manipulating Ruby here, but I think it would be cool if they became friends because you know they would be the only sea creatures in school
Can anyone explain Chelsea’s face at 0:51?
Shes know how it feels after the fight between krakens vs mermaids
I feel like Chelsea is manipulating Ruby, but when Ruby said “I’ve been here my whole life and I’m still a freak” that broke her- like Chelsea had problems with the other mermaids and SHE was the freak in her own home all her life… I think she felt genuine sympathy but she might be so focused on fitting in and impressing the other mermaids that THAT is why she starts destroying everything, to “fit in” and not be the freak that Ruby is. She might see herself in Ruby but refuse to admit she anything like a Kraken.
Just a fun theory that may or may not be true! I do hope that Chelsea does end up fixing her mistakes in the end because I feel like there’s a genuine caring soul under that layer of mermaid
Every video you make is always something that people love. I'm glad this show exists
Two things:
1. I feel awkward to be named Chelsea ATM
2. Someone is going to ship this (I've been part of too many fandoms to not see it happen)
I just want girls to be allowed to be friends. I’m bored off “pretty girl is actually mean and only taking advantage of insecure girl” IM BORED
Such a shame their friendship didn't last long near the end (if you've already seen the film).
The way she turned out at the end was no surprise, but damn does them having fun make me like that it weren't the case.
Chelsea's right. Try to aim to be a great student, have good friends and have safe fun. High school was so much fun for me.
No one gonna mention how a dude just casually follows Chelsea into the GIRLS bathroom?
Ruby Gillman is just so adorable.
Yes she is. And just before this scene, she felt scared and totally alone, feeling that no one not even her friends or her crush Connor would understand or accept who or what she truly was. She opened up her heart to Chelsea, the only one she truly felt she safe around, and we all know how that is going to end. What I give to enter Ruby's world and give her a big hug.

Obviously, Chelsea is manipulating Ruby. We got that from the trailers. What I wanna know is how many of you can ACTUALLY tell. I mean how many of you REALLY would have seen her as manipulative if not for the trailers? What red flags in THIS SCENE, NOT the kaiju battle, showed that Chelsea was manipulative? I genuinely want to know because I can’t tell.
I've only really noticed two: she acts a bit TOO friendly, a bit too over the top with how fondly she treats Ruby. Also the face-stretching and cutesy nicknames felt a bit condescending.
The second one is that she's baiting Ruby into helping her; assuming she didn't actually run away to be free, she's intentionally making herself out to be similar to Ruby to cause a feeling of kinship, of comraderie. She also already knew about the Trident; she only finally mentioned it after riling Ruby up a bit with the idea that they can't change anything.
I really hope there is going to be a backstory on Chelsea
Honestly Chelsea kind of has a good point hate to be that she does have a point she could aim a little higher than just a normal teenager I'm just saying she has a good point
Sea Captain is more like Captain Jack from Pirates of the Caribbean getting his revenge when his ship was attacked by a kraken, but now its a chase scene LMAO
I wish that Ruby and Chelsea could be friends again in the end of the movie!
Maybe in the sequel, they could if Chelsea got a redemption arc.
@@masterdrake43 Just like the others from characters and Movies series like:

Animation error
Wait Chelsea or Ruby
Ruby: the kraken (the blue girl)
Chelsea: the mermaid (the red hair and tall girl)

Nope, still don’t trust Chelsea but her design is adorable.
0:52, I like to think that expression was genuine emotion
Ruby & Chelsea look adorable with the style-
Aunque se ve muy bien que la pasen juntas y se expresen entre sí, siento que Chelsea quiere usar a Ruby. Aún así, estaría bien si al final acaban como verdaderas amigas.
I swear she is the most complicated character I ever seen an animation history like my opinion love her keep changing too many times
The fight club reference was very surprising (3:20)
This video is beautiful, ruby and chelsea have fun together and tell their stories like real friends even though they are different. Anyway, if I understand correctly chelsea wants to get rid of the krakens because she lost her mermaid friends and is left alone🤔🤔🤔🤔
That's a good theory. I'd like to see more scenes of Ruby and Chelsea's friendships, but sadly, she's going to betray Ruby in post-scene.
@@Samoanqueenbrilol i think, if she really lose someone like a familiar or a friend, she wants revenge with the krakens and in the ending, Ruby decide to stop once and forever all the war between mermaids and krakens.....
Or she just really want revenge from Gordon lighthouse

@@joshuarodriguez9934 in the video chelsea tells ruby that she has separated from her friends
She will go mad with power and trick Ruby to get the trident BUT by the end they will be friends. The fact they are showing more clips of them together from the initial reveal of her being evil and using her popularity over people makes me think there is more to her character than just "oh im evil and im going to try to destroy everyone" The movie has revealed PART of the ending already its just now seeing if Chelsea will be turned good or at least try and be friends with Ruby.
But atm we do know the film will end with Rubys family revealing they are Krakens to everyone in the city. One of the trailers already shows this with them showing what they can do with their bodys (i think one pulls his head into himself)
I agreed
I WISH SHE WAS ACTUALLY NICE
If only in the movie Chelsea wouldn't betray Ruby, they would actualy be a pretty good besties dynamic: The popular one and the infamous (aka "weirdo") one.
Sadly Chelsea is the villain and they both will have to fight eachothers.
