  • Dr. Marvin Minsky - A.I. Pioneer & Mind Theorist. Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, MIT, Media Lab GF2045.com/spea...
As soon as we understand how the human brain works, we should be able to make functional copies of our minds out of other materials. Given that everything is made of atoms, if you make a machine, in some sense it is made of the same kinds of materials as brains are made but organized either in very different ways or fundamentally the same ways.
Interestingly, if you are going to copy the organization of a particular human mind maybe you should make a dozen of them. There is no particular limit on how many copies to make and how the future society will treat them.
When will all these great things happen of overcoming death and making people more intelligent and turning ourselves into machines with replaceable parts so that suffering will disappear? Many great science fiction writers have written well about the future of human minds and what will happen if we eliminate death and people can live forever and we keep growing and so forth.
In my view, as we still do not know very much about how exactly the brain represents knowledge and does reasoning, it is very hard to predict how long it will take to do things like that. I however am fairly confident that, sooner or later, we will. Given that, in all likelihood, it does not require the breaking of any known rules of physics, and while it clearly represents a formidable science and engineering challenge, it is not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" - it is a matter of time.

Marvin's interview on AI is good. he's struggling here. age is certainly showing. well none the less, I considered informed to some extent. if the comment down below has validity. RIP professor.

Good bloody riddance. If he is the father of AI then Adolf Hitler created the state of Israel.
I am at a loss to understand this Man's reputation. He is basically a futurologist who happened to have tenure at MIT, which really tells you all you need to know about tenure.
The reality is that apart from creating a specific now superseded Turing machine he has created nothing of value and has rather used an undeserved reputation to undermine the real FATHER OF AI, Rosenblatt in his execrable book Perceptrons in 1970. Minsky was the primary reason research into neural networks effectively shutdown in the 1970s.
Even when I was at college in the 1980s it was a backwater of little interest that didn't finally start to wake up until the 21st century.
For that Minsky's legacy, if he is to be considered at all, warrants unequivocal condemnation.

If people are really worried about too much carbon in the atmosphere, start working on tiny robots that can float around up there by the billions, collecting CO2 and carrying it to containers which can be used as raw materials for 3-D printers "toners".

Which brings up a huge point: house ownership is increasingly becoming more and more a trap. The future consists of multiple dwelling in condos/apartments.

We should listen to Marvin Minsky and NOT Ray Kurzweil. Dr. Minsky gives the facts of the matter so they can be worked on if need be; Kurzweil just floats in a dream cloud shouting "woohoo!"

It's kind of like k.. these gadgets are nice, but how do I afford college and a house, especially if I'm unqualified for everything but the most primitive positions until an adult age. That has only magnified itself exponentially, to the point that basically every senior citizen is a criminal, because the difference in wealth between a CEO and a normal person is the equivalent of the difference between a senior citizen and a college student :D Sure, they have diabetes, but they can afford it.
