I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you to you guys, i built this plane about 3 weeks ago and have since taught myself to fly on it, and now I'm hooked, i have been interested in the hobby for years now but could not bring myself to buy an expensive plane that i was for sure going to wreck, but being able to build a plane that doesn't cost but a few dollars has empowered me to jump in with both feet without the fear of crashing. I'm working on the simple storch now, and i can't wait to fly it. Thanks again guys for all that you do!!

I've made a couple of scratch built planes and decided to take a short cut this time and I ordered your Old Fogey kit. It arrived very fast and surpassed all expectations for materials and the precision of your cutting. You packaged this kit like it was a Ming vase and it, of course, arrived in perfect condition. With your videos and PDF plans you guys put a tremendous effort into this industry. It is great that you produce kits this quality product at this low price. Thanks!!

Thanks for the inspirational build video and free plans, we had to try it! After about four hours of build time the main sections of the plane are complete and look ok for our first ever RC scratch build. Thank you and God bless

One of my first airplanes back in the 80s was an under cambered old timer stick and covering.
It flew great! I think I will download these plans!

I used 4 of the screws that came with my servos (mounting screws) for the motor to the plywood, and put a small square of sticky-backed velcro (walmart craft isle) 1"x1" to the back of the ESC and on inside of the right sidewall of the power pod, also attached my receiver the same way, only to the inside LEFT wall towards the back (right in front of the servo tray, when pod is mounted in plane) - worked out great!

also be sure to stick the ESC as far forward as you can and the Rx as far back as you can to avoid interference - you will need to add a small washer under the left motor mount screw location (between the plywood and the mount) and 2 to the top screw location to get the Old Fogey to fly correctly! (I stuffed mine several times before I figured out "Thrust Angles") the Motor needs to point slightly DOWN and to the RIGHT so shim the mount accordingly, I dont think Josh mentions that in the videos?

A nice old style model, and it goes well...The build method is very good, but it needs some shape changes to be more like the Buzzard bombshell..
It wants to have less chord on the wings and be shallower in the body...
What a shame we cant get that cheap and light art board here in the UK... It has given me a lot of ideas...

I'd say... maybe... depends on how heavy your motor is. The "blue wonder" they recommend pushes about 325 grams on a 2s (with an 8x4.3 according to their webside), so you're in the ballpark, but the motor they recommend is only 24 grams.
I had a motor that could generate about that much thrust and put it on the FT Flyer, but the motor was so heavy that it couldn't fly on only 300 grams of thrust.

Three thoughts? Why not put a top on the rear fuselage? Second with the "Dutch Roll" being a problem why not post the correct dihedral. I did encounter the D roll. Interesting fix for the problem, carefully heated the seams with a heat gun and as they loosened let it set in the new position, added glue later and all seems fine. Careful with the heat as it can warp the foam but taking your time with this seems to work very well. I am trying 1 1/2" instead of the initial 2 1/2"

I just use the european style foam board. It's 5mm thick, and comes in various sizes. The difference between the US and the EU version is the flexibility and the way the paper is stuck to the foam. The EU version is a lot stiffer and tends to break if you try to fold it. Also the paper cannot be peeled off.

The comment about the lazy loops that the Old Fogey can fly w/o any control input causes me much confusion. So if I am flying hands-on, will I be constantly fighting the Old Fogey's wayward ways? Am I mostly to let it do its own thing, or should I attempt directed flight? Sorry for the stupid question. My orientation is manned flight. The idea of a Cessna 172 doing its own thing is anathema.

(I downloaded the free plans myself and cut out and made one a long time ago dude-

In the UK you can get foam board that is polystyrene and 5mm thick from Hobby Craft. It's also got paper on it so it is very similar to the Dollar Tree stuff. I think they had a 3 for £10 deal, so not as cheap as Dollar Tree unfortunately:(.

Why won't my fogey fly??? It wobbles form side to side and won't climb. Got a emax gt2215/09 1180kv motor 10.4 prop 18amp esc and a 3cell lipo. Only difference is that it's made of 3mm foam board. It is as straight as a arrow and my cg looks good. I moved my lipo to all positions. Nothing works. What other trainer should I be looking at. I like the slow flying planes. Please advise FliteTest

+Ewald Stander Decrease your rudder deflections to about 40% (or maybe even less). The wobbling should stop. You might also consider decreasing the elevator deflections too for a smoother flight.
