Thank you! Honestly, I think learning how to scope properly has been the number one factor to my games improving rather than actually growing more skilled as a programmer or an artist. I’m not perfect yet, but it’s so much more satisfying to have a short, really fun game than 4-5 hours of something I think is mediocre. Thank you for your kind words!!
fellow Godot UI enjoyer!! it's honestly so fun to make UIs in Godot once you get the hang of it, it's unbelievable also WOW congrats on the super polished game! that's crazy you were able to make something so well made in such a short time :0
Scrolling through RUclips video thumbnails... wait, I recognize that dragon! 😀 Congrats on the game! It was really cute and fun. One thing I found a bit odd about the ending though: if you fail to navigate the game's challenges, when the dragon is presented to the king, a hound comes into the throneroom and the dragon panics and attacks it, disgracing itself... but if you do better, the hound doesn't appear at all. I would have preferred it if the hound appears regardless (since whether it comes in or not doesn't really depend on anything you've done previously), but the dragon behaves better and gets to move on to a successful ending and epilogue. Anyway, it was a very minor thing. Congrats again!
Hehe, thank you! Noted on the dog thing! If we ever decide to poke at the game, that’s definitely something we’d like to tweak; we got a lot of feedback with regards to people also noting that they felt it out of character for their dragon if they had raised their dragon to be particularly empathetic. Anyhow, thanks for the kind comment! And for playing the game even before you watched the video! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
3:28 I wouldn't say im a godot *expert* per say, but I've used the engine a lot so I suppose I qualify. Pretty much, whenever I plan on using something more than once, I'll make a scene and export any important variables so that I can edit the variables in each instance of the scene. I also usually make a scene for any particularly complex/important thing, like the player character for example, because then you can edit it in it's own tab without anything else getting in the way. But thats about it.
Thank you so much!! Looking back it's definitely a "wow, can't believe we managed that much in that little time" moment, but I'm really happy with how it went! Thank you for the comment! :D
Thank you so much! I'm still relatively new to editing videos, so knowing I'm doing something right is really encouraging. Thank you for the kind comment! ^_^
Really cute game and video! How on earth isn't this channel like extremely popular?! Please keep making stuff, I'll be cheering for you on from now on :D By the way, I'm impressed at how well you managed your time. I'm really bad at managing scope for my game jam games.
Thank you so much! This is incredibly flattering to hear; I'll continue to try my best! ^_^ Time management is definitely a skill that is really hard for making games... it's a weird crossroads of artistic and technological endeavors that require a good grasp on understanding how long it takes to do one or the other to scope well, and I'm still so bad at it! Even with a ton of practice professionals overestimate themselves, hence why you hear about 5 billion delays in gamedev all the time. It's something you get better at with time for sure, and something I really strive to improve at as well..! Thank you again for your kind comment! :]
@@mokasips No worries! I really enjoyed the video so thank you :D I watch a lot of game dev stuff, and it's hard to find channels that have this level of quality so it caught me by surprise. Please keep making stuff, at least I know I will be enjoying it!! Honestly half of my motivation comes from seeing stuff like this
LETSGOOO, moka winning on her FIRST EVER GAME (in Godot) Great job moke and scoot on the art, and for giving us the little dragon baby. Also that ending graphic absolutely kills me.
Loved the art style 🦭 About when to modulate components I think the best way to approach it is to analyze whether you will reuse that component more than once. I think any component you'll use more than 2 times is worth making a scene. A perfect example would be item slots in an inventory. Basically any time you found yourself repeating the creation of the same component.
Thank you for the kind words! Noted on the modulation bit... one of the next games I'm working on has item slots so this is actually perfect timing to hear this. Thank you!
i am no expert, but i try to use a components whenever my current script is passing 60-100 lines of code, making almost all my scripts very easy to read and decoupled.
been thinking about making my own game, lets see how far I get. I know C, Cpp and go and rn I am contemplating if I should use a engine or just program it in Cpp with a graphics api. Godot looks like a good option for 2d though
@@mokasips you are absolutely right, but I know of no engine that will let me use c++ that's not unreal. So, I feel like teaching myself gamedev instead of engine and a new programming language and being fairly honest, I can't do art so that will be the hardest part of it all
Unfortunately my attention span and ability to do a lot of things is best under short time periods of pressure LOL so it wouldn’t be a flat multiplier… but I’d love to be able to work on my own games fulltime one day! My delusional dream!
3:30 i wouldnt call myself an "expert" but, just use it when the code is complicate to manage without modularization. if you realize its starting to become a pain to manage.
: D Aw thank you! I’m kind of garbage at promo stuff and gaming the algorithm so I’m not surprised my videos do mediocre at best, but it does make me wonder sometimes if they’re actually low quality haha, so hearing that you think it’s good makes me really happy! Thank you for your support!
It's just a matter of practice! It was our first time making a Godot game, but neither of our first times making a game; if you practice joining smaller game jams and making small scoped polished things, you'll be able to make stuff even more polished than this! I believe in you! :DD
This is the best scope management I think I've seen for a game jam, super smart with the horizontal slice goal. The game turned out amazing!
Thank you! Honestly, I think learning how to scope properly has been the number one factor to my games improving rather than actually growing more skilled as a programmer or an artist. Game Art so elegant it inspires me to draw
That makes me happy to hear! I'm excited to see where your art ends up! : D

seconding this! a scene is great for anything to be reused or anything complex and used once!
I got hyped to make a game in godot from this video, thank you
Great! That’s definitely my goal, to inspire people :] Good luck!
That's so sick!! The art especially feels really polished. 9 days really doesn't feel like that long ;-; that's crazy!!

Nice work. Some good tips and things to think about, and congrats on winning the most votes!
Thank you so much! : D

Falls to my knees.... it's rough out there
Hey i know yoou, i play 2 of your game before !!! they motivate me alot :O !!

i hecking love dwagons!
Yay dragons!!
0:45 wait this game is popular? im not the only one who knows this?
Long Live the Queen was really popular in like… 2014-2015 or something! Not so much nowadays, but it is forever iconic to me as The EN stat raiser!
