Alfred Brendel performs the Wanderer Fantasy with such finesse and aplomb, that the effort and sacrifice to do it are unimaginable; every note, every passage is clear, even the darker rumblings. This is my favorite piano piece out of all the repertoire for piano solo; my attempts to play it over the years have had their successes and failures. Alfred Brendel's breathtaking performance here is my gold standard and favorite.
Alfred Brendel, like Schubert, descends to give the world joy and poetry through music.
Wanderer Fantasy is especially impressive to me, so brilliant!

I agree in looks (face). In build, I got the impression Schubert was a tiny guy and Brendel's stature would tower over him in person.

you absolutely nailed it. There is something so organic about Brendel playing Schubert- and speaking about Schubert's music- in that German, that most gentle, musical, careful and expressive great German language. A reincarnation, by many measures.
