@@ikexbankai I think she had no doubt that she hadn’t thanked her mother and didn’t want to rewatch it for that reason. That’s my take anyway.
Aww. My heart, when Kathy cried, I FELT THAT!! 🥹 I absolutely LOVE Kathy Bates. Thank you to the interviewer who showed her the clip of her thanking her mama. 🥹💜
Where did Kathy say that her mother chastised her for not thanking her??? Also, stop judging other parents, just because you never had a good parenting…
My therapist was just telling me about “the stories we tell ourselves” and how it affects us. Kathy gave herself a reason why her mother responded the way she did when, in fact, her mother’s shrewd response had nothing to do with what she did; instead, it was just about who her mother was (which - to me - didn’t seem like a lovely person). But, our parents are still our parents and we remember them in ways that soothe us.
Touching clip! It was heartwarming to see Bates's reaction. Bates won her Oscar the same year Whoopi did! Page finally getting her due was also fantastic.
This crushed my heart. To think she may have avoided returning to that moment all these years because it was tethered to some sort of lack in her mind. A lack that probably began with her mother minimising her achievement. You are enough and you did more than enough Ms Bates. X
@ftgjt21 They were deeply flawed. Neither had parents, as my mother was an orphan living on the streets in Boston. My father was raised in a coal mining camp in Appalachia. His father died in a mining accident and his mother was an alcoholic. My father rose up and became a doctor. My mother was fostered at 15 by a wonderful loving lady. She taught my mother manners and helped her graduate from high-school and then nursing school. She went to a wedding and applied for a job at the same hospital my father was interning. They met, three days later, they were engaged, and three weeks later, they were married. They were married sixty eight years. Then my father had a very small stroke and chose to starve himself to death. My mother passed away ten days later from Broken Heart Syndrome 💔. It was a grand love story. And they did the best that they knew how. Did I get whooped with a belt, yes, many times. I probably deserved it. But I learned to truly respect and honor my parents after I had children. None of us know what we are doing. We just try our very best. And in the end....love is all that matters.

She probably couldn’t face watching her Oscar’s speech it because she mistakenly thought she hadn’t thanked her Mom and it was painful for her. I’m glad Kathy knows now that she did and hope the emotional guilt she carried around with her for so long has gone.

Oscar show only broadcasted on TV and there was only VHS in 1990. But I doubted that her mother had recorded the show. That's why she did not remember what she said in the acceptance speech. RUclips started to popularize after 2006, and Oscars put on the clips in 2010. I guess after almost two decades of wrong memories, anybody wouldn't try to "find the clips" either.
I was in Geraldine Page/Rip torn's home in Chelsea. A townhouse as it's referred to. Multi leveled floor townhouse. A friend of mine was put up by their son, & I got to see the townhouse a couple of times.
Geraldine Page was a brilliant actress who was married to Rip Torn. Love her in “The Beguiled” with Clint Eastwood and in Woody Allen’s drama “Interiors.” Thank you for mentioning her.

Memory is a fleeting experience, especially when one is giving an acceptance speech for winning an Oscar. One thinks we can remember everything in detail, but that is not always the case. Sometimes the mind gives us different memories than the ones that actually happened in the past. Memory can be fragmentary with small glimpses of past events. I am glad Kathy Bates watched her acceptance speech after all this time because it gave her some relief from guilt that she did mention her mother after all.
To think the Bates victory has been available on RUclips for years, and yet Kathy didn’t know. Similar thing with Goldie Hawn and her win in 1970. She was in England filming, yet she never knew who presented her category until recently (Fred Astaire).
Kathy's mother's response to her winning the academy award was so negative that Kathy though perhaps she didn't thank her mother during her acceptance speech. To learn all of these year later that she did in fact thank her mother in her acceptance speech must have been quite a revelation to Kathy. There's so much that can be read into her response here - either way, Kathy is one of my all time favorite actors.
