There are several varieties of it. It has a very little intoxicating effects on some people. It's very hard when raw but if you put it in fresh water for around 24 hours, it gets soft. Then it can be eaten. But be cautious : (1) small areca nut are not for eating, these are only for prayers. (2) even big areca nuts are a little intoxicating and should be avoided by peoples who have never had any type of intoxicating drinks like wine or cigarettes.
