I loved the wide engagement ladder with 6 games simultaneously ranked. Looking forward to a similar analysis of the Carcassonne family, with a super-wide ladder!

@@bruceknight3720 Yes! I’ve been doing them for years :) Great way to keep the collection cycling, and to try out older titles.

Cool challenge. I'd say spinning tops are not very often seen in board games. Perhaps with a theme around dancing. With objective cards and different-colored tops representing different dancers.

That’s a really good suggestion. I hadn’t thought of spinning tops. Would make a fun dexterity challenge trying to land them in different board locations!

You mentioned the lack of story/immersion in Kingdomino and I wonder how that game would benefit from having that component. I've played a few games that most players will glaze over when the game starts monologuing about its story and I fear such an inclusion would've worsened the experience in Kingdomino.
I do agree with your criticism of the numbers on the tiles feeling out of place though, but glad you talked about it's necessity to the balance of the game.

I don’t think Kingdomino would benefit much from having a story. That’s the reason that the highest rung on my ladder is number 10, despite the highest possible score being 15. You can achieve the highest rung while missing one or several of the different aspects which I find engaging.
For example, YINSH is a totally abstract game. But I love it. Adding a narrative would be totally out of place.
But if a game lacks thematic immersion AND lacks interaction AND lacks tension etc, it becomes less engaging for me. Kingdomino is a case in point. I’d always personally opt for one of the more complex variants with a bit more going on. Kingdomino is a fantastic product though!
Basically, my ladder system is only looking at “engagement” which is just one aspect of creating a great product.

Not sure if this works for the challenge but... connect 4? Could be more of an action selection mechanic with the "connect 4" triggering the game end?

I haven’t played Fairy Tale Inn from CMON, but I believe it essentially does what you’re describing! :)

Rubiks cube... I tried to do one with monsters and weapons and gold

    • @AdaminWales

Interesting! It’s not a component that I’d thought of. The trouble with Rubiks Cube is that it’s patented to one company, so it limits your options. That said, Rubik’s are open to pitches from freelance designers. I have pitched to them in the past (unsuccessfully) through Mojo Nation’s pitching events.

I've tried to think soemthing with Rubik's cube up, but I didn't invent anything interesting. I can still see some potential, though.
