Villa won the league this season. Last time they won it was in 1910. This season cost United manager Dave Sexton his job after his expensive buy of striker Gary Birtles , a Forest hitman, failed to find the net for the club, despite finishing runners up last season and buying great players in Joe Jordan, Gordon McQueen & Ray Wilkins.
Stevie Coppell was never full of tricks but fullbacks could not get near him and he always produced accurate crosses! Also could hit a great shot with either foot!
I think Peter Taylor, Clough's right hand man called him a hardworking player who lacked class but i thought that was harsh..Him and Morley on the other flank for England would have been awesome in the early 1980s..
Jimmy Rimmer had so many clubs. Was Arsenal reserve keeper in 1970 & then just moved everywhere like John Burridge, both super savers. Burridge was found to be insane but clubs still bought him!
Neat colours on both sides. Villa's next one (Le Coq Sporting) was a gem of a kit, as was the away. Loved this United with the "underarm" stripes, an Adidas style currently seen on a few kits in 2019/2020 United always had decent Adidas colours apart from the blue "snowflake" they lost the last Div 1 title in.
I'm glad you've mentioned United's change strip - This doesn't look like their usual one they were wearing around this time? Other than the under arm stripes you mention there seems to be a lack of trim on the shirt.
Great game of footie by both sides who gave their all unlike some of the drivel we watch today, reds everywhere great memories proper ballers no wimps them days .👏👏👏👏👍😉
Great side that Villa had at this period, tho cant think any of them had any international caps. Dennis Mortimer was my favourite, looked cool dude & still does! Sadly Ron Saunders threw a Cloughie & walked out & abandoned that great side he had fashioned, tho they won the European Cup, but a few years later this side fragmented. Managers & their hissy fits eh.
United had failed to score in our previous five games, losing four of them. We drew with Forest in mid-week following this game; and proceeded to win our remaining seven in a bone crushingly dull style.
Sexton ruined that Doc side & lost their adventure spirit. Villa had a great passing flowing side & when Saunder's walked out like Clough the side crumbled after their Euro win.
The away end at Villa Park was the best in the top league for atmosphere. Some fond memories from previous visits there in the 80's.
great team that villa side full of energy an spirit.
Fantastic game. Two cracking headers from Withe and Jordan.

Made from cotton to, not the polyester rubbish of today.

Le parcours de l'équipe de Villa est très ressemblant à celui de Forest en 78 (une équipe d'inconnus qui gagne le championnat et la coupe d'Europe).
The days of only one sub.........ahhhh
