As a licensed balloon pilot, the part I found the most amusing was that the envelope (gas bag) shape never changed. If you watched any of the long-distance gas balloon attempts, you may have noticed that they look half-inflated when they take off. As the air pressure decreases at altitude, the gas in the envelope increases, causing the the balloon to assume a full, round shape. It doesn't change the story, but would have been a simple thing to get correct. :-)

This makes the movie very similar to many war movies, who combine a lot smaller real war movements (from all over the place) into a single compelling narrative. This is what all "Inspired by True Events" movies should do IMO.
In a way yes. But it STILL will give the watcher a wrong idea about the real history. I mean who, that isnt allready interested in history, will know the difference between "inspired" and "based on'...
Dgarc That’s exactly what I think about it. It’s OK, nothing more nothing less. They did their research and made a storyline that could’ve taken place at that time. But for it to become good or even great, they should have made the story closer to the real one.
I feel the same, its would've been better to remain accurate but I don't doubt that studios happily meddle in the scripts of movies like this to make them more "Hollywood-friendly" to a point that seeing a big-budget Historical movie that's completely/nearly completely accurate would be impossible nowadays. And honestly i'd take this over shite like The Imitation Game and Mel Gibsons movies any day.
@Kurt Barryman Apparently they are remaking Cinderella. I quote from Internet Land; "Camila Cabello's Cinderella will inspire young girls, with a stronger and more independent feminist spin on the classic tale..." My daughter will be sticking with the original animation.

Anyone who's seen Barry Lyndon, knows you can have the actors speak and act exactly as they did in the setting, and still have it be incredibly relatable and good.
That dumb "we are scientists, not fortune-tellers" line really pissed me off, because it somewhat assumes that the purpose of science is just fact-spitting. A huge chunk of the reason sciences exist is to help us make predictions, and the character that spat that line would know this, considering his position. I get that they wanted to go with this dumb trope of everyone mocking the protagonist's "groundbreaking theories", but they could've done it in a much more clever way, like the other scientists asking just how he plans to predict the weather, or tell him how risky it is. Anything but that dumb line they went with.
Yeah, Science even back then was about 'Test something, show it can be redone and the results would then be scientifically correct'.... literally Evidence proves the suposition. You got looking for an answer, you don't go looking for 'the right answer', you merely seek the answer to a question or an idea, etc.
This is typical of Hollywood, and of people who are ignorant of science, in general. Science doesn't seek to prove "facts." People *use* science to answer questions. Most (all) times the answer to a question brings more questions. Science thus isn't about answering questions with facts, but seeking deeper questions.
Yes, the “hrumph, hrumph” old men authority figures is a tiresome trope in these types of movies . Far more tiresome than any fictionalized composite character.
To be fair to the movie makers, it gave the central character an open forum to explain the importance of the proposed experiment to the movie going audience. Even today there are lots of ignorant people out there who would not simply 'get' the importance of the flight
They basically did that to the character Charles Dance played in The Imitation Game, iirc the real Commander Denniston was very supportive of Turings work and his descendants were very unhappy with his portrayal as a miserable old git in the movie. Of course thats the least of the accuracy problems with the Imitation game, in fact there are so many in that movie that its own wikipedia page lists them, HB should definitely tear it a new one sometime.

Thomas Linnemann In the immortal words of Abraham Simpson "Folks were tougher in those days. I [fell off a mountain and] was jitterbugging that very night."
It is amazing for me to have watched this for one simple reason. When I initially watched the trailer, I researched the background and found myself begrudgingly annoyed how they seemingly replaced characters with fictional ones to fit a more broader appeal. I don’t like that kind of work as it detracts from the actual history no matter on gender or race. However, this episode deals with this by highlighting how the basis of the fictional character is of a real person. Making it worthy of historical input for me. This highlights why I failed in being quick to judge and just why history buffs is great for destroying preconceptions. Thanks Nick!!!
I would love to see a movie on sophie blanchard!!! Her life sounds interesting and a story worth telling. Plus her life happened during the chaotic napoleonic era. Everything about her life is literally made for a movie.
I'd love to see you do the National Treasure movies. Obviously a lot is fiction (a massive treasure beneath Trinity Church, Nicholas Cage being sane, etc. etc.) but they put in lots of little historical tidbits here and there, i.e. John Wilkes Booth catching his spur on the flag or many of the US Founding Fathers being Freemasons.

Me: wait what?....
Imagine the pain that guy was in for a whole year. Cheers to him for making that long
Groomsman especially since medical science at the time wasn’t all that great compared to today’s.

Doctor one: all his bones are broken.
Doctor two: how do we cut that off?
Yeah, I looked it up; he actually died instantly.
Classic Hollywood, ignoring real amazing women in favor of inserting fake ones into history.
I agree, that would be a good idea for a film.
Idea for another one: J'accuse, covering the Dreyfus-Affair.
Oh yeah that's a good one. But was it translated in English tho ?
What about the '91 TV movie Prisoner Of Honor?
It's not available in the UK.
@@cebonvieuxjack It's english title is "An officer and a spy" so I suppose it got at least some sort of english release, although I have no clue about its availability in the UK. This might be a problem then.
Would love to see black hawk down, hidden figures, Selma, or the last King of Scotland!!! Love the channel congrats on a million plus subs

The Last Emperor would make for a great History Buffs video
Now I’m just being baited :(
I just want an episode on “The Pacific”
So true or bands of brothers
Cloud Proud - He already did that one.
Cloud Proud he’s done BoB.
Well I’m off to watch it then
@@cloudproud729 Band of Brothers is probably more historical because they took some creative liberty with The Pacific.
Always fascinating and pertinent. Love the way you appreciate both realities : the historical narrative and the cinematic experience. Would be awesome if you did something on the Valladolid debate movie (1992).
I would love to see a history buffs on: Anything Nick sees fit. I really enjoy them all. 👍
He lived a year after a hart attack and an falling out of the sky.he most have been one of the toughest man how ever lived. Man what a way to die. Glorious
I doubt spending a year dying felt very glorious.
I'd say living a year with your body crushed sounds anything but glorious.
Great vid! Would love to see Michael Collins appear on the channel, especially as sn Irish person!
Wow! Last time I was this early... that never happened
Airey Arjona same here.
Last time that I was this early he did a History Buffs episode on my comment.
This was a visually shocking movie!! This would be dope to watch in 4K!
any time the scene with the girl climbing up the side of the balloon came on, i practically started crying. i am terrified of heights, and even seeing that scene makes me cringe.
RUclips needs History Buffs... we miss you. If this is about the whole 'American Revolution' thing, we apologize.
You can upload any day now.
Chernobyl would be a great addition to the portfolio. Watching it and then listening to the associated podcast gives you a real appreciation for the film making and attention to detail.
Hey lad, could you please do either 1917 or The Pacific. I've been dying for either of them to be reviewed, cheers and keep up the good work!
Love your show. I want to see an episode on the movie Edison

I love your videos Nick Hodges! I've just watched Hacksaw Ridge for the 3rd time. Please do a good ol' History Buffs review on this one!
“Needless to say, this idea never took off.”
Feel proud of yourself for that?
History is always so much more interesting.
Why didn't they just make a Sophie Blanchard movie?
Once upon a time I made a Curiosity Stream subscription for a year. I assumed id watch it all the time but it wasn’t supported by my tv and i eventually forgot about it. After a year i cancelled it because I simply didn’t watch it. After that I received daily emails asking me to sign up, all my RUclips ads were for curiosity stream. This went on for weeks, i ended up hating Curiosity Stream so much that I swore I’d never sign up again.
Would love to see you do
'Che'
With Benecio Del Toro!
Yes. Haven't seen those films in a while but I remember Part 2 being close to what actually happened in Bolivia when I read The Bolivian Diary afterwards.
Okay the Stargate thing made me really happy to see. Also, thanks for this vid. I was debating watching it and now I think I’ll take a look.
