I'm Korean but for my entire life I've had this feeling at the corner of my heart that I once lived in that time and place when and where I truly had a sense of belonging. Yet in this modern world, I'm utterly lost, the feeling of having lost my own tribe. If reincarnation is real, I'm pretty sure I've come and gone here in this Asian land, whether it be Ancient China or Mongol or whatever, hundreds if not thousands times. This type of music is a temporal gateway that takes me home, though only for several minutes. Where are my brothers and sisters? Where is my true family? I miss you dearly.
"Three Stanzas” means the same tune is played three times repeatedly. This repetitive treatment aims to symbolize plum blossom's graceful posture, unyielding personality, and progressive spirit in the cold wind. The entire composition consists of two parts, including 10 paragraphs and an epilogue. The first six paragraphs are the first part, which adopts the form of a circular body. The melody is smooth and beautiful, and the rhythm is bright. Among them, the overtone theme cycle appears three times, making the tune fresh and lively, thus highlighting the plum blossom's temperament and noble quality. The second part (paragraphs 7-10) is in sharp contrast to the previous part. The ups and downs of the melody, the rapid rhythm, and the instability in the tone and the beat all show us the firm picture of plum blossoms standing proudly in the cold wind. The second part is a static, a moving, a soft and a rigid, rigid and soft, forming a sharp contrast, as if to show us the beautiful image of plum blossoms.
To me, it's absolutely brutal how much a simple song can tell and teach you. Trough maybe this is how it feels to others when they look at my paintings. Thank you for sharing in english.

@@chiefof It's a very difficult instrument compared to the di zi. I find myself often going back and playing on my di zi after my xiao practice as I appreciate the clarity and simplicity of a small, 6-hole di zi compared to a massive 8-hole xiao. I keep practicing though, because the sound of my xiao is so sweet, mellow, and enchanting. It's a beautiful instrument and I hope I can master it one day.
Last week I did a lesson with my class on resilience -- what it is and how we can develop it -- and then we painted plum blossoms using the Chinese ink painting style as plum blossoms in Chinese culture is often used to visually presented perseverance, resilience, and hope for better days. I just found this amazing piece of music today and feel like it's the missing piece to the "resilience picture" I was trying to impart to my students -- a concept explored from a philosophical, practical, and artistic perspective. Plum blossom trees are truly magnificent. Even in the coldest of winter and buffeting blizzards, they stand proudly in bitter snow with their beautiful blossoms. I love them.

@wept_in_the the dizi and xiao are easy to tell apart: xiao is blown from the end where the dizi is a transverse flute (meaning it's held horizontal like the modern western flute). There are however different styles of xiao that are harder to tell apart without seeing the end you blow on. Some styles are fully open on the top and you have to seal it shut with your lip (similar to the Japanese shakuhachi though there's variations with that one too). The other style (and the one I play) is where a node of the bamboo is at the end meaning it's closed (other than the hole you blow on of course). I believe the latter is more common but I might be wrong on that. As far as the dizi goes, I'm less familiar since I don't play it myself but if I remember correctly, there's also variations within that however they have more to do with the timbre rather than the physical construction. So yeah, hope this helps!
