thanks for this video, i totally agree with all the points mentioned.
we have a discovery 5 2017 hse luxury sd4 2.0 diesel also. 3000km after the periodical maintenance, on 44000km the car gave Performance Restriction error on the way, when we were returning back from holiday with my family. firstly, the motor did not allow us to pass 80km/h. then the engine yellow light came up and we hardly came back to our home. after the authorized service checked the car, they said engine and intercooler needs to be replaced under extended warranty. but they said that turbos are in well condition and they can not replace it, as there is no problem on these.
when we checked the market, we found out that 2 liter sd4 motors produced between 2017 and 2019, used in various cars of JLR have a chronical problem. all the cars with this motor needs the engine will certainly be replaced during 45-70k. the cars without engine changed is called as "time bomb" in Turkey.
despite of our all requests even up to the ceo of turkish authorized lr, they are not changing the turbos, but only changing the motor under the extended warranty. i heard that if the turbos will not be changed i will be in a huge risk that this problem might repeat in near future again. as my extended warranty period is going to be passed within the next few months, if the problem occur again, the cost of changing the engine is 40.000euro in turkey and i must have to pay from my pocket.
we really love disco 5, it's a great car, we do not want to change it, but lr is leaving us in a position to sell it for loss, or take a huge risk with high cost.. really pity..

Well Landrover is the worst standard for reliability, the Ingenium Engine is especially known to have problems that were never fixed, the Engines gaskets are leaking, so Petrol and especially Diesel in the 180 Version are mixing cooling liquid in to the motoroil. Which is why someone can witness even engines have total failures before they even reached 100k Kilometers.

I had same issue with front windscreen. Sealant issue. Took 2 years before leak occurred immediately after the whole information sysem replaced due to intermittent error.
Battery low voltage only occurs if you don't lock up car after use or keep up n closing doors without starting. Stupid design. Problem solved when you realise what's happening,. If that annoys you then buy something else or use an additional LFP back up battery that I use. My D5 now 5 year old. Yes JLR have a lot questions to answer for including build issues etc. Eg I had coolant leak detected at only 50km due to some boffin didn't connect a click on hose properly. Information system very annoying. Why have to manually update manually when it has its own sim card n internet connection

Yikes!, I own a late 2017 Discovery 5 HSE Lux. Owned from new. So far I have had a full engine replacement (at 32k miles), windscreen replacement, transmission confusion issue. Now the door lock actuators in the rear passenger doors are seizing! Have the doors closed with cable ties! How does LR get away with it? Clearly they know about these problems, why don’t they do recalls under warranty. They seem to have region specific policies, why do they expect their customers to go through the trauma of pursuing these as individual cases. Clearly the windscreen issue is a known fault…in my car it caused issues with the driver side airbags! I live in Ireland and they wont sell extended warranty after three years….but they will sell you a new car !!!

Hi Paul sorry to hear you’ve had so many issues - just today my windscreen has started leaking from the top right!!! Taking it to LR but they have already said on the phone it won’t be covered under the extended warranty so we would have to pay?!?

This was really helpful, thanks, as our 2Lt 4 cylinder 2017 Discovery 5 HSE had a restricted performance red triangle back in January. Following a 2 month wait to have it booked in for diagnosis, we then had to wait a further 5 weeks for them eventually come back to us to say you need a new engine! The car is well out of warranty and so we’re in limbo at present waiting to see what the outcome will be. Armed with some of the examples here plus, in the comments, I’m hoping we can make some sort of case to get a big discount.

I think I'm learning that there's no way to make a "good bet" when purchasing a Land Rover product. 2L or 3L doesn't give a noticeable, better roll of the dice; aggressive or defensive driving doesn't give a better outcome; consistent maintenance or falling behind doesn't mean you'll be fine.
The warranty WILL expire. The warranty isn't there "just in case" there's a problem it's there because there WILL be major issues, and those major issues WILL occur before and after the warranty expires. The warranty exists so I can save enough money to pay out-of-pocket expenses for the same repairs that occurred while under warranty.
$50,000 car with an expected $20,000 of lifetime maintenance with expected inflation.
I love the Land Rover Discovery and am trying to accept the reality that I can't justify such unreliability at this point in my life. I want to be told that I'm wrong

A friend has a 2.5 year old HSE, which is, according to the main dealer, the highest spec they've ever seen. He noticed it was letting water in. 3 grand. Interior out, carpets replaced. The mechanic pushed the structural windscreen with his hand, and the presumably robot glue r was having a can't be bothered day. Previously he had a Range Rover he bought at 2.5 years old. 3.5 years old, out of warranty, 20 grand to resolve. I would not touch a LR or RR with a cheque book 😳

We had a D3 for 11 years and clocked just on 300k kilometres. The issues we had were after 200k kilometres. Hand brake, new alternator, EGR valves and a dead battery. Apart from that faultless. We replaced it with a low kilometre 2016 D4 last year. It sometimes flags a suspension fault but then works fine after a restart. Under investigation!

Hello we have a 2017 discovery HSE
One day just died wouldn’t start! Warranty is out and they made us buy battery, drain fuel said it was mis fuel. My husband sent to a lab and returned that diesel was on point and ruled out mis fuel however they have a 25k bull for me and no real diagnostic on what’s wrong with our discovery. Currently it’s our biggest issue, when in past they have had to replace windshield due to water leaks and rear lights replaced. We don’t use it off road currently only has 40k miles 😢😢😢😢

I have a 2019 discovery lux. So far in the 10months that I have had it:
1/ Windscreen failed and let a lot water into the car. Windscreen was replaced and carpets replaced in the front.
2/ The passenger side wing mirror has a faulty car detection signal issue( sometimes it comes on and stays on, even if I’m in the slow lane with no cars to the left)
3/ The sound system is now not working today
Luckily I have warranty and paid for extended warranty. It’s very frustrating as previously I had a freelander 1 and a freelander 2. I never had issues with either of these cars.

You did the right thing by taking out extended warranty, you can run this up to 100,000 miles or 10 years. It's not cheap but you have found out how some problems could cause a huge financial outlay without it. My 2015 110XS Puma has extended warranty after the initial dealer three year term expired. I wish I had seen this video much earlier. I recently purchased one second hand and I already experienced poor acceleration when the aircon is on. As well on a sunny day, the left passenger aircon pushed out cold air while the driver side pushed hot air on the same settings. It's quite polarizing because on one hand you have the desirable luxury while on the other you have endless expensive faults. I am still trying to convince myself that it will eventually come right, but at what cost?

I am the unhappy owner of a Septmber 2016 Landrover Discovery Sport with only 88000 km, regularly serviced and well looked after. Three hours into our trip to Portugal for holiday the turbo started to make a noise and the warning on the dash said running on reduced power I then stopped the motor, we had the car uplifted and delivered to the last garage that serviced our car. They confirmed the turbo must be replaced quoting us in the regin of 4000€, this I did not expect from a quality car with only 88k km. They then called us to say they had replaced the turbo but the engine now required replacing at the futher cost of 12.000€. As no blades was missing from the turbo I would not have expected to have to fit a new engine to even a cheap ford with 200K km never mind a quality Land Rover Discovery Sports.

Our 2016 land rover discovery sport has lot of issues Trunk won’t open or when you can open it and closed it it indicates that still open and you can’t start it through apps and when you are going to start it manually and the brake pedal is stiff you will be able to start it and will wait for the tow truck to tow it to the dealer. They replaced the harness of the trunk door not even a year it’s malfunctioning again. My wife were telling me that there’s another issues like the when the headlights in auto mode the lights malfunction then turn on again, then when she’s driving the speed doesn’t match on the speedometer then one time it happened to her that she start driving there’s no power etc.. etc… my wife keeps blaming me buying her land rover discovery it even affects our relationship because of this piece of crap.. I told her before I have a peace of mind when I’m away and she’s driving the land because it’s Land Rover and we live in canada and during season I don’t worry for my wife driving it to work then back.. but 2016 Land Rover discovery sport is really headache! I never issues with my past used and new different brand of vehicle except this one. I hate land rover since this issues too much issues expensive luxury but very cheap materials and parts… Land Rover it’s a ripoff

I too have the same model as you and year. Mine has had electronic glitches too from the start. Then started with intermittent stalling. Went to landrover they diagnosed saying needed a new engin and alternator. Had it uplifted and taken to a deisle engin specialist they diagnosed it needing a new crank shaft pully not a new engin. Went to another dealership and they replaced a chip in the ceiling as the car key was not been detected when driving, first dealership could not find a fault. Thought this was the end of the intermittant stalling issue but no! Now has to go back to original dealership to see if they can diagnosed the original problem as they had it when was still under manufactures warentee. Car has been off the road now for 6 weeks.

Another great video. I too have an SD4 D5 hse lux but mine is a 2017. Like you I love my car despite its faults.
Interestingly I have had 2 of the problems you’ve had. My near side wing mirror camera has the same issue as yours and LR charged £900 to replace. And the other issue I had was the crank case failure which resulted in having a new engine fitted but they also replaced both turbos and other ancillary parts on mine.
The other issue I have had which is a known fault was the leaking windscreen.
With all of that said, the dealership I use to maintain my D5 are fantastic and have my confidence and with the added backup of LR Assist I don’t worry.

I would love a new defender or Range Rover as my next, but after your video’s and actually many others it just seems like it’s a bad decision, and even if nothing goes wrong I may always be thinking in the back of my head that something would inevitably!
The fact your local JLR basically called you a liar with the petrol suggestion then didn’t offer any sort of olive branch when their engine needed to be completely replaced as well is not what you would expect a brand selling £100k cars regularly should do. The nerve to then tell you your brand new engine doesn’t itself have any additional warranty is the icing on the cake!!!!
I hope you have better luck with the next one, whatever you choose! Keep up the videos though I do enjoy them.

Had critical engine failure at 40k miles, been quoted £18000 for a new engine. Returned to main dealer and there are so many with premature engine failure they have a waiting list on the ramps. Disgusting customer service and no courtesy car. If you live in a village or have a family like i do then that is catastrophic. Will never EVER buy one of these again. They should be doing a recall on all ingenium engines as they arent fit for purpose. BEWARE

Land Rover is utter rubbish. Just stay away from it. Almost bought one. So glad I didn't. Really dodged a bullet. I bought an Audi Q7 instead. Had no real problems and am really happy with it. The only down side to the Audi Q7 is that the 3rd row of seats are no where near as spacious or comfortable as the 3rd row in the LR Discovery

Thanks for the video. I’ve had all those problems. Although I don’t know if my engine block is cracked, but they have never been able to find the correct issue for the lost power, etc. I’ve had several more problems than what you listed. I will never buy another Land Rover, they are the biggest piece of shit Cars! The only thing I like about that car is the all-wheel-drive system performed well when I take it off the road. And yes, I take mine off the road and drive it through large creeks with the water above the bottom of the doors. I have a 2017 model. There is something different about the engine From the 2018 as mine has an external spin on oil filter and the 2018 has an internal canister style oil filter

I have a new defender (actually, this is my second -- long story; see here: ruclips.net/video/xCwR7ceur2s/видео.html). I have had 55 major and minor issues in 12 months. I am sorry you have had the issues you have with your D5, but I think you may have got away quite well as others have reported more issues (additionally, apart from your cracked block, yours seem relatively minor)! Is yours the 2.0ltr diesel? The 2.0ltr are well known for cracking blocks in Australia; that Land Rover don't admit to having heard of it happening before is a very different claim! If it is any consolation, I have had BMWs, Mercedes, and Toyotas which have been far more unreliable that your D5 seems to have been (I had a toyota Land Cruiser which snapped it's crank as well as having many other issues). I think that it is a the luck of the draw rather than any specific vehicle (my last L322 was bullet-proof for over 350,000 miles and my RRC notched up 1.1 million KM).
Land Rover (that is, Thierry) has publicly announced that he will be clamping down on the reliability issues. Sadly, they have not done so with mine -- over 2/3s of my issues are still unresolved and Land Rover admit that they can't fix some of them (see here: ruclips.net/video/9T6M-hjuhBc/видео.html). In addition, they have agreed to buy-back my Defender, but in exchange, demand that I sign a gag order that prohibits me from talking about the issues I've experienced or helping others with similar issues. I can only assume that Thierry's plan of attack is to silence affected owners through compensation linked to a gag order -- resulting in no fewer actual mechanical issues, but in a reduction in their publication. I'll leave you to ponder that.
Thanks for the videos! You have managed to make yours much more manageable in length than I do -- I put it down to our respective fields (medicine vs philosophy).

I think Land Rovers are no worse than any other car, I do think the owners are a bit more vocal, I could run through a list of faults from many cars, but the owners just leave it or get it fixed, thats it, unless you go on specific makes forums, its a status vehicle and most drivers like nothing more than to fill you with stories of how much it cost or how many times it's been repaired.
