- May.06 -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was married to her husband Marty for 56 years. He died in 2010. Ginsburg talks about some marriage advice she got and what she cooked at home. This is part one of her appearance on "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations." The show was recorded on September 19 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.
He sounds like he was way ahead of his time, her biggest supporter and an amazing husband and father.

I went to law school in the 1970's. It was no picnic. You had to have a highly developed sense of humor and thick skin to get through it. I can't even imagine what Justice Ginsberg had to go through. She made it easier for women like me, as I hope I may have made it easier for younger women who wanted to practice law.

ymarrero23 as a woman, I believe that both parents should have an equal responsibility over raising their kids. That doesn’t mean one of them stays home to take care of them while the other works. I mean that they both work and clean and cook. If the woman wants to stay home and clean and cool, then that’s her choice and that’s totally okay. If a man wants to do that, totally okay. My mom and dad both have very demanding jobs, and they still take care of me. It isn’t that if one of them isn’t home then suddenly there’s not enough love for me. I mean genuinely, it’s possible for a woman to do both, for a man to do both, and I think that’s the best situation, if they both do something. But if one or the other wants to stay home instead, then I genuinely see nothing wrong with that, because that’s what they want to do, and as long as they’re not hurting anyone, then that’s alright.

There's no secret because there's no such thing as a happy marriage.
So you she married and had a child in the 50's with a guy who believed in sharing the childcare and chores. My mother and father did the same. So, it's not just graduate women from Cornell like her who met the kind of man she spoke of. Only difference is my parents married in 1946. So that idea of men being helpful to child bearing wives was not unique to her generation. It was already in place. And my mother was the same age as she was except over five years earlier my parents married and had me. So, for her to claim she and her husband were some kind of pioneers for the liberation of women places them among probably thousands of women who did the same, except before their time. Even in the mid-80's I met a woman in her 90's at a nursing home while I was completing Hospice training. She told me she had been a medical doctor. I told her that was remarkable. She immediately let me know she was insulted, because she came from a family generations ago who also were doctors before her. Way before 1990 and 1890. So there. This idea that women today are so suppressed, still, is outrageous. Maybe they are suppressed, but not all women today and long ago came and come from high female intellectual suppression. Not then and not now. And that goes for all races, genders and cultures. Get over it. Thousands of women and others have will and do get over their own personal limitations.
You can't make a roast or a stew in 60 minutes only 7 different meals she made that's surprising. As a judge being selectively deaf might be rather biased of evidence.
Context is important. She only practiced being selectively deaf within the context of maintaining a happy marriage.

I hope you'll come around to the idea that individuals should be able to make decisions for themselves about the situation and timing of child-rearing. Such good advice from her Mother-in-Law! Mine (I married the "favourite" of six) : "I'm going to give you a lot of advice, just what I've learned. Just use it or discard it but let me say it". I loved her so much. And between her and my own Mother, her son and I managed to raise the most awesome two daughters. I loved our Mothers, both.

I love it, almost all men are actually just looking for a free all-inclusive domestic help team when they get married, it’s really wonderful to hear a story of a real man who maintained his economic responsibilities as well as catering for household and childcare needs.
