1:17-3:48 Interviewer: Were you the one who told Marie to keep her her natural?
Mum: Marie has always loved her natural her and used to cry when she was taken to the salon to have her hair braided and hated it when we tried to straighten it. As Marie grew up, she refused to let anyone touch her hair and learnt how to do her own hair including braiding.
3:48-4:14 Interviewer: Was she born in the UK?
Mum: She was taken to the UK at the age of 2 when her dad was posted to work in the military. So she grew up in the UK but loves her country Ghana.
4:14-7:45 - Interviewer - Does she speak Ghana language?
Mum: Yes, but when she was growing up, we made the mistake of not teaching her the language and because she attended a predominantly white school, she couldn't speak it until she decided to learn it as an adult. At the moment, she can have a conversation in Ghanaian language but there are certain expressions she might not be able to articulate
7::45-10:33 - Interviewer- What did she want to do as a child?
Mum: A lawyer. But she watched a documentary where a lawyer defended a client who lost a case and was sentenced to prison. The client came out of jail and murdered the lawyer. This put Marie off the law profession so decided to study medicine. To make sure it was the right career for her, her dad took her to a local hospital to see what doctors do. On her first day, they took her to a theatre room. On seeing the blood, she decided medicine wasn't for her so she went back to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer/ barrister.
10:33 - 11:04 -Interviewer: Back to the hair:-why didn't you encourage her to straighten her hair?
Mum: From childhood, Marie has always been that child who would always ask for explanation if you tell her to do something. She says God created her with beautiful African hair so she'll never change it unless someone can give a tangible reason to do it.
11:04 - Interviewer- Does she sing? Mum : Yes, she's a songwriter and has written many songs. It was also her prayer to marry a singer and God fearing man as she mentioned in her engagement video.
The rest of the interview discusses her mother's new song which, in a nutshell is a mother's prayer for her children to obtain divine blessings, favour and honour. They also talked about the need for mothers to sow good seed in their children so they can become good role models like Marie.
