- This is our day 1 recap of our trip beginning with London. We did these videos as a way to share what we thought and felt and to recap the whole day talking about what was filmed but also what was not. Let us know what you think of these and if you liked that we chose to do these.

Secondly if you don't want random people commenting on your remarks don't make a comment on a public comment section it's called freedom of speech its my god given right to comment on your comment don't mistake my rights for political support.

Chelsea is an incredibly expensive area, hence the luxury cars, House prices of over a million pounds and Gordon Ramsay's flagship Restaurant
all of London is crazy expensive ( zone 1 zone 2 ) but I love it
@Pardus 1970 I knew Gordon Ramsay had a restaurant over the water in Battersea (where this lovely couple popped to the park) but I didn't realise there's one in Chelsea too .

You mean 5 million houses. London is so tragic it costs you 1 million to live in Brixton and have the risk of getting stabbed all the time. Idk why people in London's shitholes sell their 500 grand houses and buy a 5 bed house in the north in a nice area

You don't get shops in the arrivals area of airports. People tend to want to get out as soon as possible rather than shop around at after a flight.
Also you can only purchase goods duty free when you're leaving a country.

a tip for the fish and chips, the best ones are on coastal cities on the seaside (beach) since its generally always fresh whereas pubs tend to use frozen fish
Good advice. The best fish and chip shops in London use fresh fish, usually from Billingsgate Fish Market. The frozen fish typically used by pubs aren't remotely as good, and they don't cook/fry them as well as the best chippies do. My favourite chippie in London is Poppies in Hanbury St, Whitechapel, and there's another good one (called "Happy Days") in nearby Goulston Street; both are a short walk from Aldgate East tube station. For those who don't want to stray too far from central London, I can recommend Gigs in Tottenham St, just off Tottenham Court Road.
Not saying this isn't true but I once had a chat with a fish shop owner in grimsby who said his fish came from some processing plant down south despite possibly being landed at the local docks. So perversely his fish would be the least fresh.
@@markrichardson3421 I agree Mark, being at the coast doesn’t guarantee good fish and chips. There are good and bad chippies everywhere. Not all fish bought at the coast is fresh.
And don't buy from an F+C shop on a Monday - there's usually no fresh fish that day.

Chelsea is a part of London. In the same way manhattan or brooklyn are parts of nyc. Also very expensive rich part of the city.
You drive on the right side of the road, we drive on the CORRECT side of the road :)
Ancient roads show signs that historically people did drive on the left, possibly because it allowed your sword hand to defend from those attacking you on the open road, if they drove on the right they'd have to defend themselves with the left hand.
Some of the 'run down' areas you mentioned are probably just old brick housing that you won't see in the US in trhe same way. You see a lot of the back gardens from the trains and many of the houses are terrraced. Fish and chips in pubs are not usually the same as the fish and chip shops. The quality of course varies considerably.
and a fish and chips at a seaside town from a fish and chip shop are miles better
Yes, 'run down' is a bit of a subjective term. A 3 bed house west of London towards the city, but east of Heathrow, nothing fancy, can still cost the best part of £400-500k+

I can't think of any poor or run down areas visible from the Piccadilly line on the way in from Heathrow. In fact, many are far from being poor! Granted some older properties may not look as good from the back as they do from the front as many people will spend their money on fulfilling the "kerb appeal" requirement!

Loving the summary. To answer a couple of points you've raised. Each terminal at Heathrow arrivals has multiple shops landside but you need to go upstairs.
Yes 'normal' people don't drive in London as the costs to do so are crazy! There's a £15 charge to drive in central London per day and to park for any amount of time could run to £60-£80 a day! Most people use public transport or cycle (big push over the last decade for cycling with an increasing amount of cycle lanes throughout London.
Yes Chelsea is an expensive area.
You could spend weeks in London and not cover everything tbh. There are so many things to do!
A contractor and I used to visit a site just off Trafalgar Square and it was cheaper and quicker(!) to travel down from the Midlands, pay the congestion charge and park in the closest multi-storey at Q-Park, Leicester Square, than to buy 2nd class rail tickets, stand all the way to Euston and then take the tube with a 5-10min walk from the tube station to site.
I think it is truer to say that you could spend a lifetime in London and not cover everything. It amuses me that a couple that I know use the excuse that living in London allows them to take advantage of all that the city offers, but when quizzed you find that they don't go out because living in the city is so expensive they can't afford it.
Upstairs is Departures. They were going through Arrivals. Nobody needs stores after arriving on an international flight. Business and First Class passengers have arrivals lounges, with showers, laundry/pressing service and complementary breakfasts.

As for the temperature: you probably do not realise how far north most of Europe is. I am in the Netherlands, near England, and we are er the same height as southern Alaska.
As long as you all enjoy yourselves, that's the main thing. London is a very busy place, and very expensive. So just look forward to all the other parts of the UK you intend to visit, have a wonderful time. And thank you for coming.

Regarding Heathrow, you have to understand that American airports are different from most other countries because they are designed as much for the huge domestic market as they are for international travel. As such, both arrivals and departure sections of the airport are combined, and are served by shops, restaurants, etc. Heathrow’s traffic, on the other hand, is 95% (or more) international, which means that there must be strict separation between departures, which are packed full of shops and restaurants, and arrivals, which are very spartan and have very little shopping facilities. This is necessary for effective customs and border control.
When you return to the USA, you will find the arrivals part of the airport you initially land at will be similarly empty, and you will be funnelled through customs, immigration, and baggage retrieval with little or no services. It’s only when you get into the terminal for your domestic flight that you will be back among shops and restaurants.
Tips for Tourists::: If you get a chance, take a 30 minute train ride from Waterloo station and see the best preserved Medieval palace in Europe - Hampton court palace. It's fairly pricey to get in but honestly, it's worth it.

@@selecttoursnyc7787 Hever Castle is great and if you're in Kent with an Air BnB or a guest house also check out Leeds Castle (which is of course not in Leeds but in Kent). It's one of the very few UK castles that still has a moat (with black swans) and (if you don't mind paying a LOT) you can actually stay there overnight. Further, if you really like castles and living history the best one in the country is probably Warwick Castle which is HUGE, well preserved and while it is set up to cater for tourists, families and day trips it definitely resists being a "theme park" (the family who have owned it for generations still live there) - a brilliant mix of things like demonstrations of long bow archery and a real working trebuchet with simple stuff like walking the battlements and exploring the very real dungeons (not for the faint hearted - quite gruesome and no kids allowed). You can arrange to stay overnight in Warwick castle too. The town of Warwick is also well worth a visit, mediaeval, lots of Tudor buildings, winding alleyways and quirky shopping. Warwick is about an hour and a half train ride form London. Then, if you really want to max out on castles you have to go to Wales and see Caernarfon Castle - this is a whole town INSIDE a Castle. Google it and do your own research to fit it into your travel plans and if you buy fish and chips, watch out for the seagulls who are EXPERT at stealing them from your hands - no joke ! Don't forget the Tower of London though, that's pretty cool too and when people ask you in a quiz "when was the last execution at the tower" you can say 1941 - a German spy faced a firing squad there. When they then ask "who were the last prisoners in the Tower" you can reply "The Kray Twins" - in 1952 notorious London gangsters the Kray Twins were deemed so dangerous that the only place they could be kept securely was under guard at the tower - officially, it's still a prison.

As someone who travelled extensively for my job, there's a trick for international travel - set your time to that of your destination and try to eat/rest/sleep according to that, not where you start from.
Agreed! Getting, e.g., an 11am flight from Heathrow when they serve lunch I say to myself "This is breakfast".
The other thing is they are flying from West to East. I always seemed to have more jet-lag doing that journey than the East to West leg.
It's always easier flying west, its a lot easier to adjust, basically it's a super late night that your body clock can easily adjust to with sunlight.
Flying east, its probably an "overnight" flight, so you a don't sleep a full session, then your body wants to sleep and the sun tells you to be awake.

London is not a 2 day tour! I’ve lived in and around london all my adult life (I’m nearly 60) and there are still areas I don’t know at all and places I haven’t been to. Of course there’s more to see in the UK but London really does need a trip all of its own. Looking forward to seeing more of your experiences here 😊

I agree. On my visits I always set aside about a week for London. I've been three times, as an adult, and have still only scratched the surface of what London has to offer!
Same, I lived there for twenty years and spent most of that time driving round it so there aren't many places I haven't been but I wish I'd done more touristy stuff when I lived there like the London Dungeon and the Tower and some of the tours and I agree, you'd need at least two weeks to see the big sites but good to see you had a good time.
Chelsea is a very upmarket area, the big 4x4s in the area, such as Range Rovers, which were designed as off-road vehicles, are colloquially called "Chelsea tractors". Since none of them have been anywhere near rough ground.
Chelsea & Westminster are the two of the most expensive parts of London. Properties like the ones you walked past at the end of this video can range from £2,000,000 up to and past £10 million. Many of the hotels in that area are converted houses, so are often too small to add amenities like lifts, but I agree they should have informed you that the room was on the 5th floor. The weather in the UK is extremely variable, as two weeks ago we had days where the temperatures hit the high 80's. I hope you get a more settled period for the rest of your holiday, welcome to our little island and thank you for your honest views.

Stores and shops are mostly in the Departure lounges. Arrivals doesn't have all that.
It was such a fantastic idea that you guys had to do recap videos (in addition to just filming sights and scenery). It's like you're doing a reaction video, but to real life! Hearing your experiences first-hand (while they were still fresh in your memory) is fascinating, and it really helps us understand what it felt like for you (by letting us see familiar things from a totally different perspective through your eyes).
This was a great first recap. I'm really looking forward to more of them.
Perhaps you could also consider asking your subscribers to post specific questions about your trip in the comments. You could then pick out a selection of the best questions and answer them as part of your narration voice-over (or as a video insert) whenever you're next editing a video.
Yes, I agree....I am loving the recap videos, too, after each vlog....it is like listening to family or friends recounting their holiday 😊

You sounded like any other normal couple after a transatlantic flight....the jetlag and time difference is a killer for the first couple of days, although all that walking probably helped you out more than you realise after those sedentary hours on the flight.
From my own travels across the world, most countries seem to only have retail outlets in their departure areas mainly due to them offering 'duty free' (cheaper) prices which aren't allowed on the arrivals side - something you will no doubt cover when we get to your departure from Heathrow! Having said that, you should've had access to some form of mini supermarket and eateries/coffee outlets before you exited the airport.
Had to chuckle at the rain comments 🤣🤣....you probably now have a better understanding why the weather is always a topic of conversation in the UK!! Rain can come in showers (short bursts) up to endless days of continuous rain with every type, temperature and duration you can think of..........and with a large number of our weather systems coming from the West and North, being an island means there's no land mass to take the rain before it arrives over the UK.

When we fly across the pond we call the first day 'zombie day'. Have a nap, don't do anything important, expect low energy and poor decisions, go to bed early and Day 2 is the start of the trip.
There are over 50 shops at Heathrow airport.
Coming from Birmingham, going to the center of London always felt like visiting a different country to me. All seemed bigger, brasher, more cosmopolitan and outgoing...and I have to admit more stylish. Looking forward to seeing how you felt about the other corners of the U.K. Thanks for all of your great videos.
I can't stand London! If I need to go to a big city I go to Brum every time, it's so much better and nicer!

Welcome to the UK! I'm up in Scotland but I've been down to London twice on holiday and, from what I can remember, it's far more busy and expensive than up here. Also, London is usually hotter than most of the UK. I found it funny that you were saying it was a bit chilly and I'm here sweating with the doors open and my fan on.
As for the fish and chips, it's usually the coastal towns that have the best ones since they get their fish super fresh. Shouldn't be too hard since you're never far from the ocean in the UK
It's great to hear your first impressions, you guys have such enthusiasm. On international trips, my husband and I have learned to pace ourselves throughout the vacation: do the sightseeing in the mornings starting early after a quick snacky breakfast, leisurely lunch (main meal of the day, cheaper than the same thing in the evening), then a more relaxed afternoon strolling, sitting in parks, soaking up the local atmosphere, seeing all the great things that aren't on the usual tourist itinerary. Light supper, evening stroll (very atmospheric). Getting to the big ticket sites early, 10-15 mins before opening, means you miss most of the crowds. Love your trip.
That really made me laugh, as soon as you started walking you heard two drivers cursing at each other. Lol. That’s us 😂🤣😂. I am so excited you made it here you guys. Awesome

When I travel for any distance, I ALWAYS download loads of films and TV on my phone or iPad so that if something happens, I have something to watch. My philosophy is that it’s Sod’s Law that something will go wrong, so always have a backup plan and, preferably a backup for the backup. As you found out, it is so miserable sitting there for hours with nothing to do. You might want to think about doing that for the return flights.
Or pack a great book!🙂
Fish & chips vary from shop to shop. The trick is to find one that suits you.
For reference, I live in Bristol, which is 90 minutes from London. Once a year I stay in London for 3 nights just to potter around and see tourist attractions. After 15 years, I think I'm close to seeing about a third of the places on my checklist. Since it's a holiday, I make ample time to just sit for a few hours and drink/eat/people-watch. I don't want to be rushing around like a blue-arsed fly.

Chelsea is a very posh area of London
People who say you can see London in two days have obviously never been to London. I lived there for 20 years and there’s still places/things of interest that I haven’t seen.
If you visit London again I’d suggest staying at one of the hotels on the South Bank, they’re much better value than West London. Staying in Chelsea you are mostly paying for the location. There’s a Premier Inn close to Tate Modern and another near the Globe Theatre that are excellent value for money, and you don’t need to use public transport so much because most things are within walking distance.
I can empathise re the flight, just think of we Kiwis who take around 24 hours plus to get to the UK and have a 12 hour time lag to get through when we get there.
And vice versa, my trip to NZ was the worst jet lag naturally. The flight was also delayed for over an hour in London while we were on it due to an avionics issue, and another hour in LA. Great trip though

You need a proper chippy for a good fish not every one that does fish is nice. And it’s normally a treat so maybe once a month we have one as a family.
No wonder you were tired. And travel is so exciting that we very often omit to plan for total rest time. But the more you travel the better you get at planning the whole shebang. It great to hear the excitement in your voices….I love London and I would need at least 2 weeks to see what I wanted to see…. So you did really well. Due to mobility issues I had to plan for taxi fares…. Not cheap…. But the taxi drivers are amazing…. ❤️

Flights & arrival - I assume you were on a US-based airline so you would have come in through Terminal 4. I use British Airways (Terminal 5) and it is a state of the art terminal, has its own mini underground to the different parts of the terminal as well as all the lounges, shops etc you could imagine. You could have used the Heathrow Express to get to London which is quicker, but more pricey than the Tube.
I would suggest you contact the airline about the IFE not working (I would). You might get some money off a future flight.
Fish & Chips - Oily fish/batter is not good - that means either the fish was not drained properly after cooking or (horror) it was a frozen fillet. To be honest London is not the best for fish & chips, it is probably best for other cuisine. There are some good fish & chip places, but you have to hunt them out and they are usually outside the central areas.
T5 is waaaay better than the old terminals, although eating in there can get pricey.

Oily fish and chips sounds pretty disgusting. There seems to be a changing fashion in how to fry them. Years ago there was no vegetable oil so they were cooked in lard, then the powers that be decided that lard was unhealthy so it was replaced with cooking in oil, now they've had a rethink and decided that oil that's used multiple times is unhealthy but that lard is fine - so cooking in lard is now a thing. Lard tastes better anyway.
A good thick batter on a fish will seal it and then steam it inside making the fish nice and flake away with a fork
Depends when they arrived, Terminal 4 only reopened on June 14th. It could well have been Terminal 3, which is the oldest terminal in use at Heathrow and a bit grim, unless you're flying with Virgin!
It’s your first time there’s bound to be teething troubles you are right about London being exhausting to visit I’m from the U.K. and I’ve visited by train and I’ve actually drove through the city around park lane Mayfair and Knightsbridge as well as Hammersmith and I can tell you it’s stressful

As a Londoner, Elephant and Castle, born and bred, I feel the need to say that driving or riding a motorbike, through London isn't stressful!
It's a joy, a wonderous experience.
I'll try to find a link of RJ riding around London. One of his clips is on a video entitled typically British, where a bus driver, a pedestrian and RJ, all convene at the same point, letting each other "go"! No stress, no hair pulling, no cursing, just politeness personified!

Nice that you went to Battersea Park. I grew up in Battersea, and the park was my playground! I'm hoping you spotted the Peace Pagoda while you were there, it's just near the river and is absolutely beautiful. 😊

Thanks for noticing the Tube doesn’t smell, so many subways do, I’m calling Paris and NY here! The new Elizabeth line is like the future, shame you missed its opening. BTW Chelsea is about as rich as it gets in London, so you’re in prime car, high living area!

Really like that you are keeping to your usual format as well as doing outdoors travel videos.
Arrivals areas in airports are usually really boring. You just want to get to your train or taxi. In departures you are waiting for two to three hours, so you are literally a captive market for shops and food vendors.
You need to visit north Yorkshire beautiful place
Central parts of London and its spreading outwards, have a Congestion Charge which discourages cars and encourages cyclists and people using public transport. Also, it depends on how early in the morning you arrived. because the rush hours are pretty set. It also depends if the school holidays are on or not.. because during them traffic is slightly better in the rush hours as you do not have the school runs taking place.
Oh my! Yes, London is exhausting even for us Brits! I live 50miles away near Brighton (~1hr direct by train to London Victoria) and tbh, easier to stay outside and travel in by train and accommodation is cheaper.

Nice summing up of your trip and first day here. I’m glad the weather got better as your visit progressed. That was certainly an unusual cold spell for the time of year as there were northerly winds coming straight from the Arctic. What you experienced was more of what we call ‘April Showers’ where you get rain for a few minutes, then it’s sunny for a few minutes, then it’s raining again etc etc. It’s what helps make the country so green and so good for growing a wide range of plants. Looking forward to your next video when I hope you’ve recovered from jet lag somewhat.
Pub food quality can vary wildly from awful to amazing. It’s a good idea to look at the reviews on google maps before picking somewhere to eat, especially in tourist heavy places like London where they don’t really care if they get repeat business or not.
A bit of a generalisation about London. You get that type of place in particularly touristy areas like Oxford Street and Leicester Square, but the majority of cafes and restaurants in London are catering to locals, not tourists.

Anyway, I’m really sorry about not being specific enough on the precise geographic locations. Should I provide a list of every street in London with a ✅ if my comment applies and an ❌ if it doesn’t? Actually that’s too binary because the quality of food is subjective to peoples tastes and sometimes chefs have good days and bad and sometimes they might have food delivery problems.
We’re going to need to write an algorithm to take all of this into account and then probably develop an app to ensure everyone’s got access to the latest most detailed information on whether they may or may not get a decent pub meal in London on any given day.
Oh, but where will the cut off point be where we say this doesn’t apply anymore? We can’t just stop this dead and have it apply at one end of a street but not another. We’re going to have to develop a phased algorithm to graduate this transitionally from London to the surrounding areas. I’m so glad I’ve got you onboard to help me with this, we’ve really got our work cut out for us now, this is going to take years to address your comment response.

I feel I have to tell you what I've learned of Fish'n Chips. What I've learned, is that when during the time of Queen Victoria the railway system went viral, it became possible to transit Fresh cod and haddock inland. So it became reality during that time, the food mentioned became usual lunch for factory workers. Also watercress went aswell popular in London because of the railway, for it was grown at the south coast and it spoils very eagerly the same day, so horse carriage is not an option

Hi guys , I am glad you had a great time in London , Chelsea is expensive area , it's the posh part of London everyone take's the tube or bikes in London because it expensive the only people you see driving in central London is lorry drivers Taxi's and the rich because they can afford it and the lorry and taxi's can clam back any charges they get!

They've made a point of building cycle paths all over Britain as well as cycling lanes on the roads which I would never be brave enough to use lol

Guy's ,you should come down to the west country [ slightly bias as i live here] while your here...Salisbury..Bristol...Bath...all are historic city's within a 2 hour train ride and the scenery is breath taking....and if you go to Salisbury you can get a bus out to Stonehenge if you like..have a great vacation.
With any Airport I've been to throughout the world, one usually sees the shops going in, but they expect people just want to leave once they've arrived, US included. Totally agree with you, London takes a long time to see it properly (like any major International city) otherwise one only see the tourist bits, which are the real London. We all live and learn from our travels. Enjoy.
No way can you see everything in London in 2 days !! I live just outside of London and I am still finding lots of new things to in London in my 50's
I used to visit London, to see relatives, on & off over 20 years, there's still places I haven't seen.

Glad you are enjoying so far. As for London traffic, it is heavily tolled for drivers, making it too expensive for the many to drive. As for Chelsea, it is a very old part of town and some buildings are many hundreds of years old, hence the tight , steep, staircases. Any tourist to London should live out in the Home Counties. eG I live in Surrey, and can "train" it into London centre in 30 -40 mins. Also staying in the the Home Counties, gives you access to many National Trust estates and treasures. Any US tourists / bloggers should reach out to the British locals for hotel or other accommodation. enjoy x

The tube is the way to go in London. I never owned a car in the UK, got my first car when I moved to Canada in 1982. UK transportation system back then was great.

Tip for the future when travelling to different time zone: as soon as you start your flight change your watch to the destination time zone. As you start thinking in the destination time your body clock will begin to adjust and it will help you avoid jet lag. We’ve just travelled back from Orlando to UK and despite only napping on overnight flight we are back on uk time. BTW it works in both directions.
We don't drive on the wrong side of the road, you drive on one side, we drive on the other. Have a great time

What I like most about this channel is, for want of a better phrase, the lack of BS. Just honest thoughts and opinions, with very little hyperbole in one direction or the other, unlike some channels. Looking forward to seeing and hearing about the rest of your trip.
I actually enjoy sitting by the wing when flying. Get to see and hear a lot of the workings during take off and landing

I’m glad you like the ‘area you’re in,’ Chelsea is one of the poshest neighbourhoods in London😊 I hope while you were there you had a chance to walk up the Kings Road. It’s got lots of great shops, restaurants and cafes where you can sit and watch the people go by.
We did that because it was actually one of the cheapest options around Buckinham Palace, because of the Jubilee I would guess.

Heathrow has absolutely tonnes of shops, restaurants and cafes but they’re on the departure side (as I’m guessing you’ll have found out since you filmed this), so it’s designed in such a way that you don’t pass through them on arrival. There are loads of shops at every terminal, because it’s one of the busiest airports in the world - usually at the number 1 or 2 spot, tending to alternate with one of the airports in the Middle East.
I was exhausted just watching you two. Slow down. Consider seeing a show in one of the West End theatres. Unless it's changed since my day you can get bargain tickets for the same night's show in Leicester Square. Watch out for pickpockets there though.
The hotel sounds like an IBIS, which are basically a cheap place to sleep and put your bags, they are not intended for people to stay in the rooms.
Battersea is known for it Dogs and Cats rescue centre. Paul o'Grady's For The Love of Dogs is a good show that looks at the work they do.
The rooms coming with a kettle is standard in the UK and lack of one is a valid reason to leave a bad review.
