Open handed playing is a concept where you set up and play as right and left handed. Manu is a straight right handed player. Where do you see the open hand?
I'm not getting the open hand thing either. he does play often with his hands palm side up it gives such a delightful touch especially on spalshes he used so effectively with P.G openhanded should refer to, in this case, riding the hats with left hand; the backbeat with right. Milton Sledge and Ben Carlson (bun e carlos) are two who come to mind and of course , me. It so lovely to get around the kit . it opens the body, squares you to the kit, to the audience and psychologically, opens me up to the tune. its ton o fun to crash a set of partly open hats in trad grip dropping the left arm way down low, and upstroke a splash cymbal with the right hand at the same time
So he left ECM behind??? Anyway, this is very nice, however, I'd wish he would get a real bass player back in his band (and send the organ on holidays...)
I saw him just two days ago in Brilon, Germany. He brought along this young beautiful woman from Norway playing the electric upright bass. Unfortunately I had to go to the bathroom just when he introduced the band, so I can't tell you much more, except that she did a really good job ;)
after 40 years of listening and playing music I dare to say...Manu Catché is the best drummer ever lived on earth.
If you're here, you know the good stuff

Always loved Manu's playing, so controlled and restrained but such feeling. 😊😎

Dave, I thought you were a guitarist! 😄
Simon Phillips plays open handed. Manu Katché doesn’t. I assume you meant open hearted. ;)
