Couple of tips- you can soak your grains a couple of hours before cooking- rinse before cooking, and they will plump faster and cook quicker. Also, you can toast them in some butter to give them a "bready" flavor. If you cook them without the fixins, then you can have them for lots of dishes, like salads, or you could have tossed them into this dish, with just a little of the stock- quick eatin'😆😆
IVE JUST LEARNED HOW TO EAT WHEAT BERRIES. IVE SPROUTED THEM FOR MY CHICKENS AND THEY LOVE IT. JUST ORDERED MY BERRIES FROM THIS COMPANY. THANK YOU FOR SHARING
I love what berries for sourdough bread and my grain bowls. They add such a nice nut flavor to grain bowls. My chickens love them sprouted! Palouse had been my go to for berries and many beans PNW grown is the best!!
Have a mix of hard and soft wheat berries that hubs and I purchased from Palouse. We were clueless on how to use it for other than grinding to make bread. THANK YOU Leisa (and other posters below) for sharing ideas with us.
Leisa, I am so glad I watched this video! I would have never thought to use wheat berries for anything other than milling for bread flour! That's why you are da bomb...... luv your channel and thanks to you and Palouse for the great giveaways!
Thank you Leisa. I don't eat enough bread to stock up large amounts of wheat berries to mill. But you have given me a great reason to buy wheat berries now. I totally enjoy meatless meals and this one looks delicious. Thank you Palouse for this opportunity.
My grandmother used to make something similar to that. She served it over grits and eggs for breakfast and cold for a lunch salad. I had forgotten about her doing that. Now im thinking leftover chicken or pork with this on a wrap for lunch. Yummy.
Thank you Gor showing another option with these berries! I have some from Palouse Brands that I have used for sprouting greens for my chickens during the winter months. Such a great when the birds can't get to the grass here in Michigan!
I've always wondered what the difference is between hard red or white wheat. Thanks for your information and great videos, Leesa. And thank you to Palouse for sponsoring!
It’s more than just for bread! I love how simple this recipe is and how delicious it looks. Stay hydrated, from your neighbor in Northwest Indiana (we are super hot and humid here too).
I love the flavor of the hard red winter wheat. Looking forward to trying this way of preparing/eating it. There are so many different ways to enjoy it.
I like to make my own bulgur wheat and use it all sorts of recipes -- my favorite is tabouli. The hard red wheat really does give the bulgur a nice nutty taste.
I cook wheat berries in with my brown rice. 3/4 cup brown rice and 1/4 cup hard red winter wheat berries cook in about the same time - 40-ish minutes. The berries always gave a nice “pop” or chew to the rice. Good base for a rice/grain bowl. When I was younger and had better teeth, I would chew on a handful of the raw hard red winter wheat berries. This would develop the gluten enough to be able to blow bubbles like bubble gum.
Thank you Leisa and Palouse for another great idea using wheat berries! I use barley often in soups and stews, but I never thought to use wheat berries instead of barley. Brilliant!
Thanks, Leisa. I enjoy using wheat in dishes instead of just rice. I hadn't considered using rotel tomatoes with wheat. Thanks, Palouse, for sponsoring this give away.
I continue to add hard red wheat, along with the soft white wheat berries, to my food storage. Love the email notices' when Palouse has a good sale on the buckets. Shipped to your door, already safely packaged for long term family food storage! Thank you Palouse, and Leisa for the great recipes.
Love all the info you are providing about the berry themselves. Also like that you did a non-bread recipe. Never thought of using the berries in something like this. Very handy and helpful.
This was SUPER useful!! I have gallons upon gallons of hard red wheat berries, but I never imagined using them for anything but flour for baking! I also now know that I should probably invest in some hard white wheat berries. Great info, and awesome for real-life cooking! As usual, outta the park, girl!⚾️
Love all the grains and the different things you can do with them. I love in the summer months to do grain bowls, I usually just cook the grain of choice on its own and then over the course of a week do different recipes with them 🥂
I use my Slow Cooker all year round, I use my 3L one to make my steel cut oats for a weeks worth of breakfasts or my 6L to make more to freeze. I also make my stock in them all year round to can for the pantry.
I am going to have to try this for my sourdough! Should be a win win. Nothing is better than toasted sourdough with coffee as this was my morning time with my grandmother!
This is only one reason why I love you. Always diversity from the pantry and something I would have never thought of but will add to my list of things to try.
Hi, Leisa! Thank you for sharing another way to use wheat berries. With meat prices continually rising, it is great to have a different option for protein. Thank you Palouse for the giveaway and discount codes! 😊
We love wheat berries!!! So good in salads, chili, sloppy joes… and now a new recipe to try. Thank you for the recipe and the opportunity to win from Palouse Brands.
I recently started using my crockpot in the summer. Like you, i usually use it for doups or chili, but started making shredded chicken as well as a pineapple jalepeno chicken in the crockpot.
As a vegetarian I sometimes use wheat berries in place of ground beef in chili. One thing I might say is that while wheat is really a good for you, it does have a lot of fiber and you need to let your gut adjust to it so you aren't uncomfortable by eating a lot of it all at once. I also love cooked wheat in place of oatmeal sometimes for breakfast. Just remember all things in moderation! Thanks for the recipe! I got my soft wheat in the mail today so I am making your cranberry muffin recipe tomorrow.
Thank you very much for sharing this. I totally forgot about using hard red wheat berries in cooking. I have never done but would like to try. I have some and need to try. Thanks for the reminder!!
Glad to see you show others uses besides just for bread making. Wheat berries are something we should utilize a lot more, the protein makes it so versatile! With the prices of rice increasing this would make a fantastic substitute!!
Wow, I learned a lot that looks delicious. Thank you so much. I definitely want to expand my palette and never new about the protein in red wheat berries. Yay!
I make a wheat berry salad with fresh baby spinach, chopped eggs, blueberries, red onion and feta cheese. So good!
Share that recipe. Sounds good
That sounds delicious!
Some people gluten intolerant can have fresh milled flours true celiac people not so much.

Wonderful!
My thoughts too!😊

What a creature use of hard red wheat berry! Can't wait to try this. Thanks Leisa ❤
Thank you for this different way to use the wheat berries.
I cook wheat berries in with my brown rice. 3/4 cup brown rice and 1/4 cup hard red winter wheat berries cook in about the same time - 40-ish minutes. The berries always gave a nice “pop” or chew to the rice. Good base for a rice/grain bowl.

The spoon you started with looks like the ones I ate off when I was a kid, in the 60’s.
They are vintage....lol took me years to acquire a set
Never knew you could cook with it like that. Looks yummy

Looks YUM!! I've never tried wheat berries. I'll be making this!

I lived in Palouse, WA as a kid. I buy their products for memory sake. Love their Gabanzo beans!

I love how versatile this grain is. Also, I don’t use my crock pot during the summer much. I think of using it more for soups and chilis.
