Tech guys must enjoy being interviewed by Norm; not only does he do the proper research, but he shows a genuine interest and understanding. As a result, Norm's able to have a conversation with Andy rather than Andy just talking at him for 10 minutes.
Now that was a tough interview. Talk about a technically dry subject that has a very flash easy to talk about side and make sure that people who are into it are not insulted (as happens in every tv interview ever) while still making it accessible for people who aren't into it but just might be curious. Norm and Andy pull it off and my globally illuminated hat goes off to both of them. Great interview.
CrashBash ***** Anyone remember the good old days when people in this situation would say something like "you must be joking" instead of "you must be trolling"? Because, you know, that former line would have been much more accurate in this case for reasons that ... well, let me put it this way: IT'S! A JOKE!
I have to admit, saw the movie today and it was the first time I've truly been rendered speechless by the CG since WALL-E way back in '08. Those scenes when they're flying around the city are perfectly done! It's always so nice to get an inside view on how everything works too, so thanks Tested for bringing us this content!
What I've come to know about the technologies that have emerged over the years is that 3d designing, especially with animations, have made it possible for gaming companies to use existing designs as templates. Now if gaming and movies aligned well together, then seamless qualitative experiences will be expected. This is exciting
It's incredible the amount of detail and effort that these guys put into creating a city like this! It would be so cool if it could become a game of some kind so we could walk around it!
See, it's funny... Usually you don't think about all the artistic and technical work that goes into making animated films and simply regard them as big business blockbusters, but they really do give the opportunity for so many people to exercise their craft. And that's cool with me.
It's almost a crime how under appreciated graphics guys are in movies. Just check any movie with notable computer graphics scenes and you'll find plenty of comments dismissing them and talking about them as if it's a button the studio presses. Also despite the huge learning curve and amount a general animator needs to learn. For instance, not just one, but a whole suite of applications that they'll need to know as they move from job to job, unlike say, an architect who only has to study this once in their lives and then really is set for a career, animators have to keep on learning constantly, year in year out, the software constantly changes and so you could look at it like being in constant part time education and trying to fit a career in around that for the rest of your life. You'd think then that these would be super high paying jobs? Not a bit of it, only a select few get full time positions, the bulk of the industry is freelance and very poorly paid. It's very odd considering the amount of skill needed and the dedication to just stay qualified.
Wow! Him and his team are such an integral part of the final product and just become small white names moving upwards on a black background. Both the nerd and the artist in me are very happy you covered this stuff Norm!
Psh, stop investing in this "Hyperion", people. I know light, laz0rz and all that stuffs may look cool and all, but you know what's cooler? *EXPLOSIONS, BABY!* Give your money to *MR. TORGUE*, and get that TORGUE FIESTA going! Forget about that laser inferno, it will never be as cool as *EXPLOSIONS!* Actually, no, wait. Sorry mr. Torgue, I quit. It's time for *PEW PEW LAZ0RZ!!!* >:D
Kael I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that... I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over...
Zeke Aeloen If you're talking about me, don't worry, I'm already mentally damaged far beyond the limits. *STRIP THE FLESH! SALT THE WOUND!* For the Greater Good! >:D
hehe, good point. I just was mentioning it because Norm was talking about having this power at home and I think Blender is a great solution for the poor man
sebianoti sorry, disney didn't give me much to work with on the technical side. the thumbnail comes from a behind-the-scenes clip that i included twice in the video! (6:00 mark, and at the end). -norm
Nice interview and some show-n-tell. But not enough! Something wrong with walking around the place? There's a bunch a kids horsing around on the floor back there. Couldn't join in?
Walt Disney, would often come up to his people, and ask them too do something. They would tell him, that they had never done that! Walt would just look at them and say, "Then now would be a good time to learn!"
At the time he wasn't. This happened when he was building Disneyland. You could say it was a golden age for creativity. You never told Walt it can't be done! You would just tell him, that you would find a way! The other thing that people forget is, that if it wasn't for Walt's brother Roy, there would be no Disney Corporation. As Walt had gone bankrupt three times, before he asked his brother too join him!
Imagine the crazy shit you'd be able to do in a video game if the technology used for Big Hero 6 was cheaper and more easily accessible to game developers.
The only result would be better looking prerendered cutscenes. There's a reason they need a supercomputer to render the scenes. That shit (especially global illumination) can't be rendered in real time on modern hardware with modern software. Plus video games already look fine. I would rather have better gameplay than fancier graphics...
TheDominitri Ever since we made the jump from 2D to 3D games, games have been looking shitty. People freak out about how great games these days look and fail to recognize that any pre-rendered or hand-drawn background would look just ten times as good. So if they finally get real-time ray tracing to work, I'd welcome it with open arms because maybe things will finally start to look good again.
Penny Lane They wont get real time ray tracing to work, maybe in 5 years, and that's a big maybe. and in today's games hand drawn or pre-rendered backgrounds look terrible, you can easily see the giant pixels because of the low resolution of that texture, and the higher the resolution of your screen is, the worse it'll look. and things do not just look good because of ray-tracing, ray-tracing doesnt magically make the polygon count of models high, and make the textures high resolution, and makes maps big enough, so that a developer doesnt need to do crutch moves and slap a huge texture (that looks terrible) to create a background.
Martin Marinov I just did a quick bit of research on it, and it looks like a lot of the calculations for Unity 5's global illumination is precomputed, ie, only works on static objects. I haven't done a full read of the system though. I'd imagine for dynamic objects they might use some form of screen space ambient occlusion for similar shadowing
Hi Tested! Why don't you shake their hands at the end of an interview? xD I thought maybe because you want to keep talking to them after the video but still, when you start wrapping it up and end the video, you always keep them hanging I can tell they want a handshake.. Sorry it's probably just a petpeeve i have :)
Probably because the end of the filmed section is not the end of their interaction, and when Norm and this guy part company in real life, they'll shake. If they shook in the vid, it would be a fake shake. Fakes are a pet peeves of mine.
Disney could use Voxel Global Illumination Technology (www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/maxwells-voxel-global-illumination-technology-introduces-gamers-to-the-next-generation-of-graphics) instead of remaking the Wheel.

This series of films must have completely passed me by, I haven't heard a peep about Big Hero 1-5
You must be a troll.
Big Hero 1 - 5 were in book form
CrashBash ***** Anyone remember the good old days when people in this situation would say something like "you must be joking" instead of "you must be trolling"? Trolling = joking = not being serious.
CrashBash Trolling = Trying to provoke. Joking = not being serious.
Great interview, it makes such a difference when the interviewer knows and is interested in the subject matter. very interesting to watch.
I have to admit, saw the movie today and it was the first time I've truly been rendered speechless by the CG since WALL-E way back in '08. Those scenes when they're flying around the city are perfectly done! It's always so nice to get an inside view on how everything works too, so thanks Tested for bringing us this content!
Just wanted to give some feedback, Norm your interviewing skills are really starting to get to the next level. You did a great job leading this one!
What I've come to know about the technologies that have emerged over the years is that 3d designing, especially with animations, have made it possible for gaming companies to use existing designs as templates. I love how passionate Hendrickson is just talking about the technology behind the scenes. Very awesome individual.
It's incredible the amount of detail and effort that these guys put into creating a city like this! It would be so cool if it could become a game of some kind so we could walk around it!
unfortunately it would me nearly impossible to render that amount of detail in real time...for now
Kingdoms hearts 3
And now, all of the technology of the global illumination can be accessed for free in blender cycle render

Great interview, largely due to the great questions asked by the interview. Also a great insight into how large animation find are rendered out.
Wow! Him and his team are such an integral part of the final product and just become small white names moving upwards on a black background. Both the nerd and the artist in me are very happy you covered this stuff Norm!
Phenomenal! I'm ready to see it.

you just made my day a lot better xD
Anthony, stop trying to promote your game.
My thoughts exactly ☺

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that... I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. Will they release a game for this movie, coz it's the best disney releasing an open world game may be in the future.
Thanks for making this video! I really appreciate seeing this kind of thing.
awesome interview and interviewer, just phenomenal, thanks
Blender Cycles on the GPU is pretty sweet Norm. I bet your new computer would run it super nice
hehe, good point. I just was mentioning it because Norm was talking about having this power at home and I think Blender is a great solution for the poor man
Norm you know your stuff. Always a good job
so are using this for 4k in the future? when 4k becomes available for everyone.
What modeling tools do they use. For example Maya or blender etc.
Does Tested get special access to interviews like this?
very impressive stuff, thank's Norm !
Would be nice to see some images of what he's talking about, you added a nice thumbnail to the video so you have assets you could have edited in.
sebianoti sorry, disney didn't give me much to work with on the technical side. the thumbnail comes from a behind-the-scenes clip that i included twice in the video! (6:00 mark, and at the end). -norm
55k cores for rendering?!! i can only imagine a big server room use as a rendering hub...
Did Norm get to see the rendering machine? is it huge?
Nice Technology thumbs up
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, love the nerd stuff like this, thanks ...
Nice interview and some show-n-tell. But not enough! Something wrong with walking around the place? There's a bunch a kids horsing around on the floor back there. Couldn't join in?

What about releasing San Fransokyo to the Oculus Rift?
holy crap Norm knows his shit, thats one smart dude!
Isent ray point what blenders render engines use
Hmm Hyperion isn't that the company in borderlands one and 2.5, you know with handsome jack...
What is the hair physics software for Zootopia called? Is it Open Source yet?
+JordyT1998 LOL
Omar Hesham
They said they would, pretty sure that it's an update on their older fur technology

TheDominitri Actually Unity 5 and Unreal Engine 4 have this illumination system that they are talking about in this video.
Penny Lane They wont get real time ray tracing to work, maybe in 5 years, and that's a big maybe.

If this is of interest I suggest you look at Blender it's freeware. (and brilliant).
Watch out Norm, virtual photons are something completely different ;)
any one else have trouble with the sound of this video ?
7:29 Haha and we were just recently talking about the 1TB micro SD card
So is this photon mapping, or something else?
Is Norm Japanese American?
I have not seen any famous Japanese American bloggers introducing with them the famous animator people yet.
Awesome!
Your best episode to DATE BY A MILLON RENDERS! :)
I don't necessarily agree at 8:34. I am a fan of stories, and some very compelling worlds, are ones that I would never want to live in.

7:50 Well 1TB Flash drives are available, they are just not feasible to buy. www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-Predator-1TB-DTHXP30/dp/B00E65QM8O
Good God man! The price!!!!
I know right! A tb ssd is cheaper
Awesome.
A terabyte already fits in a thumbdrive
Haha. Only $1000 bucks a pop. I don't think that I could possibly use all of that storage!
Having nearly maxed out my 120gb SSD at home, I can totally see using 1TB
Wow, that's so not for me. I keep losing my thumb drives all the time. With this one, that'd be rather annoying.
Love it!
The 3d animation era:
2013- who knows what A.D
Took five years for ray-tracing to make it's way from software to games.
Damn, time passes too quickly.
is it just me more does norm have less acne? I strangely miss it >_
7:28 - Oh, you mean like www.amazon.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-Predator-1TB-DTHXP30/dp/B00E65QM8O ?
I thought San Fransokyo was a star of BH6!
yup
I love watching people watch Norm sign off lol.
Disney could use Voxel Global Illumination Technology (www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/maxwells-voxel-global-illumination-technology-introduces-gamers-to-the-next-generation-of-graphics) instead of remaking the Wheel.
this is probably the GTA15 world
If this tech isn't used in the ps5 I'm gonna be a super pissed 50 year old
Onya Norm
awesome1
They have all these resources but the tie in movie game will prob have one of the worst half-assed created worlds.
Waaaw j'ai des papillons dans le ventre rien qu'à regarder...
I just had a nerdgasm, but I have no tec nerdy friends to talk about this, that is realy not cool.
2nd comment
Hmm,, this reminds me so much of the video for Porter Robinson - Language.
