    I have 4 rocks in my tank, 3 I bought dry, the other was a live rock. The live rock had a ton of algae on it. Added one, emphasis ONE, turbo snail. 3 days later, no more algae.

  • @karennation3580
    @karennation3580 3 года назад +1

    The only CUC that i have seen actually do anything is the hermits! i have had all you have mentioned and they sit on one spot for days and weeks on end! i dont get it! My turbo has been in the same spot for a month! Could it be possible they have a spot they prefer during the day and work at night then go back home and just sit there during the day? i only have a few members left so i am going to try adding a whole pack at a time with these various ones and see what happens because i am plagued with cyano! At least it looks like it but dosnt respond the chemiclean! Thinking about sending in a pic with microsope and see if someone on reef2reef can advise me! it almost goes away when i blow the sand bed and rocks daily but always comes back and never complete leaves! Thanks for video! Very helpful! I know you dont have this tank anymore but this is the tank that inspired me a few years back to get into reef keeping! I owe it all to you!

    Great video. I love the tank. I would add four honorable mentions to your list. Astrea snails are better at eating hair algae than Trochus but cannot turn themselves over. Red leg hermit crabs are better algae eaters than blue leg but are 4+ times the size. Nerite snails are really good at keeping your glass clean but they lay eggs all over the tank which is annoying. And pincushion urchins are also really good algae eaters but will move things that are not secured around the tank. I have also had good luck with saltwater mollies eating cyano and hair algae but for people with the room Tangs might be a better option.

    I went through Dino algae about 3 months ago at my tank’s one year mark. It had 2 stages. Right when I thought it was gone I bought some more corals then it came back and killed all the sps. It took 5 months to rid and I don’t even know what out of the many things I did actually ended it. I’m pretty sure though it was too low of nutrients so be careful when lowering them to try and get rid of other algaes

    I don't mix in snails with hermits. The hermits inevitably always kill off all of the snails in order to get their shells. Even having extra shells for them to choose from won't stop this.

    I stay away from Turbo snails. Good point about Emerald Crabs as they will go after corals and fish if hungry. Also, I prefer dwarf cortez hermits as they do the same job as blue legged, however, they are more peaceful members of the community. They come from The Sea Of Cortez. Blue Legged Hermits will fight for shells and kill snails. They are good at cleaning but they are much more feisty.

  • @RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery
    @RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery 5 лет назад

    The best snails for algae IMHO are nerite snails and small (less than 1.5" or 2") cowries. No issues with righting themselves and nerite snails will breed in your tank keeping up their own population. As cowries get to the 2.5 to 3" mark they can become unsafe for coral but it takes years for them to get that size. I totally agree with what you say in your vid though, not trying to contradict. We have small white crabs (completely white) here that are better detrivores than emerald crabs and they stay small (less than 1/2") and are 100% reef safe.
    A complimentary video to this one, would be about sand sifting inverts and fish as well as macro algae the grow in the sand (which detoxifies it). Just sayin'.

    • @nicholasmiddleton398
      @nicholasmiddleton398 5 лет назад

      VitoTron 417, I’m under the impression that TDS testers are quick and easy. Sounds right but I’ve read lab testing could still detect heavy metals. Maybe it was someone trying to sell me on RO/DI. Just getting started myself. Got a 55 gal and haven’t even added the water. Distilled works but I was told to contact distiller and double check they don’t use copper. Might be the TDS meter works perfectly.

    2 mins in, you say clean up crew too much.... way too much... any writer for books videos film will say the same thing, you repeat the same word over and over, just brreak it down into clean up crew then you could say snails, crabs, fish depending on the situtation, i have counted in 2 mins 20 seconds well over 20 times you saying clean up crew.... that is 10 x per minute mate. clean up crew.......... clean up crew...... i noticed it on your "LFS" video.. don't abbreviate on videos say fish shop, fish store and aquatic store. just a tip from someone who picks up on these things ( i am not a video editor nor anything special i jsut wanted to put my own advice in was all)
