Literally every single person I've met with dreads you can smell their hair before you see it and they even say they don't wash it. So on personal experience, people with dreads are dirty, and it makes sense as it's literally matting hair, it's not washed and clean hair otherwise it wouldn't clump together like that. So I dunno about you but i don't think it's a myth, I think people think that from experience.

bb kyul it’s not obvious, a lot of people believe that people with Locs don’t wash their hair. Not every hairstylist is a trained loctician so I don’t assume that he knows anything about locs. I love his videos and I find him hilarious and informative. I don’t assume anything. I can only go by what he said. I have locs (dreads) and people assume all the time that I don’t wash and condition my hair in order to get it to loc which isn’t true.
Can you please stop with the myth that people with dreds don't wash their hair or scalp. It is infuriating. I had dreds for 7 years and my hair and scalp were washed and cleansed regularly. Most people, I know who had/have them wash their scalps and use other treatments for deep cleaning from time to time as well. Dreds, like lose hair, are clean or dirty as the person caring for them. As a professional hairstylist, I feel like you should know better and not make judgements about a person's hygiene from youtube video and not continue to spread untruths that lead to stigma against dreds.
Yeah but its because soap residue and other things can get caught in them people dont realise theyre cleaner than they look plus theres people with dreadlocks that it isnt as much dreads as more matted hair that looks grubby and greasy
First off he meant it would feel good because with dreads you can't have a deep scalp cleanse not that he didnt wash at all. Part of a Rastafarian lifestyle is not washing their hair I guess, so if your just doing it for a hairstyle perhaps different but it's not some false assumption, it's a sterotype based on truth and I've experienced it plenty.
@@sally-annward375 My dad has had dreads for around 20 years now and his hair has never smelled anything but clean, he is a Rastafarian that doesn't mean he doesn't wash his hair. There are some people who don't take proper care of their hair or, don't know how to take care of dreads or possibly don't have a hair type that is very compatible with the style. The state of a persons hair reflects back on the person more than dreads as a whole just like with any other hairstyles.
The more you wash your dreads, the healthier they are and the quicker they lock up. I had mine for 4 years and washed them just like I washed my non-locked hair. Come on Brad I love you but please stop perpetuating disgusting stereotypes, dreads are NOT dirty any more than hair is dirty. So true, you definitely need to wash you scalp even if you have dreads. I would even think you could get a nasty skin infection if you never washed your scalp :O People are quite uneducated and for some reason think dreads smell bad or that they're unclean. I had dreads in the past for 3 years and I definitely took very good care of them, and my head never smelled bad. My mom even let me have them on the condition that I'd take good care of them and that I'd look neat (I was 13) :P
I just wanna say that YES, people DO wash their scalp when they have dreads. If your hair is oily, then your dreads will fall out at the roots and possibly affect the rest of the dread. To keep dreads healthy, you SHOULD wash them. Clean, dry hair just knots up better. This is why you don't want to use wax to make your dreads, because it will build up and get gunky and gross. You also dont want to condition them-- kinda defeats the purpose of dreading your hair in the first place. I speak from experience and a ton of research. I'm currently growing my hair out again to get dreads in a few years.
Bella Holman I find that not a lot of hairstylists know much about dreads. The ones I've met that have the knowledge have either had to take a course specifically for dreads or they have had to do their own research. It's kinda sad. I wish I could just go to a salon and get maintenance done to my roots, but no one in my area that I've found know what they're doing.

I think he meant getting it washed at a salon all the way through. If you have dreads 1/4-1 inch from the scalp (and they’re thick like the first guy) you really can’t get underneath them to scrub the scalp. But tots agree. I had a male roommate with dreads like that and he washed them often.

Sheena Allen You’re right washing has nothing to do with hair loss. But it does have something to do with your hair locking together, oils from not washing wouldn’t allow the hair to lock up and dread. Causing them to “fall out”
You wash your hair with dreads... To get dreads you actually have to have clean hair for them to lock up, the oils in your hair causes the knots to slip out, so it has to be washed (at least until they lock up). There are so many misconceptions about dreads, people should know what they're talking about before they call something gross or judge others.
It depends on what kind of dreads you want. if you want "natural" dreads; then don't wash your hair for a while and it will naturally form to dreads. But sure; clean hair can also be formed into dreads. But if your hair is stripped of the natural oils while you try to dread it; your hair will have MAJOR damage as if forming it to dreads wasn't enough damage already.
Potato Wellcox you wash your hair with all hair types.... I have dreads and I have afro textured hair and I kept and keep my hair clean. Having dirty hair is not healthy and having dry hair isn’t healthy.... there has to be a good balance for all hair types
skol no matter how you choose to maintain your locs they still have to be cleaned even if they are freeformed locs. Hair will naturally knot if you don’t comb the knots and tangles out so you don’t have to walk around with dirty hair. Locs don’t damage your hair unless your maintenance is damaging
I think dreads can look amazing on people with afro hair that locks easily and well, but it looks terrible on slippy pin straight Caucasian /asian hair. It just doesn't have the same structure
People with locks aren’t dirty... that’s a stereotype that came about via colonization and a lack of people understanding how POC’s hair actually works. My hair is my heritage and both are pristine.
well i mean if you’re white with dreads (aka: mats) then a lot of times your scalp gets covered by the tangles. if your hair is actually textured enough to naturally form real locks (usually in the C row of the chart), then washing your hair is easy

As a dread guy with almost 6 years of dreads let me tell you that i wash my hair and my scalp as u said almost every day, and every dread guy i know does the same, even bob marley did it , so please stop with that nonsense that we never wash our heads
You just need to know how to properly take care of them. After each wash you re-twist the lock and dry them under a hooded dryer or a dryer of some sort. Its just hair if you treat it right it will treat you right.
Oomuu I make and maintain dreads for a living, and no. They don't. Sometimes there might be some lint caught in them from hats or blankets, but unless it's a very nasty person, there will be nothing else inside them.

I think when white people get dreads they either can't wash their hair as often or have to do it differently. Black people can wash their hair regularly, even daily.
Also I have been told by non-white persons that saying “dread” locks is offensive. I would say braids or locks but not dread locks and it is offensive to some people. I would want to be respectful of that! 🤗
One thing you've got to bear in mind is that it's easier for a Black person to comb out their dreadlocks because the hair 'locks' due to the curl pattern and texture of their hair, and it's not just backcombed/rolled/crocheted like a white persons dreads

My bestie has been growing her own hair semi locks style and it is so much work, washing her hair takes an hour + drying her fair fully (she lives in Europe so its cold) can take up to 3 days, after she applies all that needs to be applied for her locks to look pretty and they look really pretty I must say. Knowing a lot of ppl with locks (since am from the Caribbean) I can vouch that they take extra more care for us who don't have it ^^

You usually cannot donate dreads. To make a wig you have to have healthy long hair, and they make the wig hairpiece by hairpiece, so i don't think a wig company would bother undreading the hair even if it was healthy.

Henrique Mendonça it actually only had to do with texture, usually black people can only wash their hair every other day because there’s less oil in our hair, but when you have locs, you can actually wash it as often as possible to keep the hair in place/clean because the oils aren’t as necessary with dreads
Sidney Hills wax will cause build up of oils & other residues. This can potentially lead to mold forming. Clean dreadlocks with simple residue free products & palm rolling is your best bet.
Sidney Hills that’s not true at all. I have locs and I use a regular clarifying shampoo and my African black soap as a moisturizing shampoo.... I never used wax in my hair and never will. It causes build up and is unnecessary. Some people use it because they don’t know any better or their hair is bone straight and even then you can back comb and not use wax
Brad Mondo you can actually as your hair grows out the scalp is just like regular hair before you get it re-locked ... it just doesn't feel as loose while washing as when you take it out it's a different feeling while washing but you get all of the scalp (black locs at least that's the only experience I've had ik white/straight hair has to do it differently)

This just goes to show that cosmetology studies do not in any vastness cover styling or caring for the hair of people of African decent or people with textured hair. I wash my scalp everyday and I have a few dreads, going full head pretty soon. The important part is to dry them the whole way so you don't get dreadrot. If you don't wash they will fall out as well. Not washing dreadlocks is a horrible rumor. We don't use any horrible products on our hair either unlike undreaded hair. We can't use anything with residue, no sulfates, parabens, wax, and no palm . You are to only was scalp and let the soap wash though the dreadlocks.

bb kyul it’s not obvious, a lot of people believe that people with Locs don’t wash their hair. Not every hairstylist is a trained loctician so I don’t assume that he knows anything about locs. I love his videos and I find him hilarious and informative. I don’t assume anything. I can only go by what he said. I have locs (dreads) and people assume all the time that I don’t wash and condition my hair in order to get it to loc which isn’t true.

Can you please stop with the myth that people with dreds don't wash their hair or scalp. It is infuriating. I had dreds for 7 years and my hair and scalp were washed and cleansed regularly. Most people, I know who had/have them wash their scalps and use other treatments for deep cleaning from time to time as well. Dreds, like lose hair, are clean or dirty as the person caring for them. As a professional hairstylist, I feel like you should know better and not make judgements about a person's hygiene from youtube video and not continue to spread untruths that lead to stigma against dreds.

But its not a myth that people with dreads don't wash, literally every person I've met with dreads you can smell their hair before you see it and they even say they don't wash it. Part of a Rastafarian lifestyle is not washing their hair I guess, so if your just doing it for a hairstyle perhaps different but it's not some false assumption, it's a sterotype based on truth and I've experienced it plenty.

There are some people who don't take proper care of their hair or, don't know how to take care of dreads or possibly don't have a hair type that is very compatible with the style. The state of a persons hair reflects back on the person more than dreads as a whole just like with any other hairstyles.
The more you wash your dreads, the healthier they are and the quicker they lock up. I had mine for 4 years and washed them just like I washed my non-locked hair. I just wanna say that YES, people DO wash their scalp when they have dreads. If your hair is oily, then your dreads will fall out at the roots and possibly affect the rest of the dread. To keep dreads healthy, you SHOULD wash them. Clean, dry hair just knots up better. This is why you don't want to use wax to make your dreads, because it will build up and get gunky and gross. You also dont want to condition them-- kinda defeats the purpose of dreading your hair in the first place.
I speak from experience and a ton of research. I'm currently growing my hair out again to get dreads in a few years.

The ones I've met that have the knowledge have either had to take a course specifically for dreads or they have had to do their own research. It's kinda sad. I wish I could just go to a salon and get maintenance done to my roots, but no one in my area that I've found know what they're doing.

I think he meant getting it washed at a salon all the way through. If you have dreads 1/4-1 inch from the scalp (and they’re thick like the first guy) you really can’t get underneath them to scrub the scalp. But tots agree. I had a male roommate with dreads like that and he washed them often.

To get dreads you actually have to have clean hair for them to lock up, the oils in your hair causes the knots to slip out, so it has to be washed (at least until they lock up). There are so many misconceptions about dreads, people should know what they're talking about before they call something gross or judge others.

It depends on what kind of dreads you want. if you want "natural" dreads; then don't wash your hair for a while and it will naturally form to dreads. But sure; clean hair can also be formed into dreads. But if your hair is stripped of the natural oils while you try to dread it; your hair will have MAJOR damage as if forming it to dreads wasn't enough damage already.

skol no matter how you choose to maintain your locs they still have to be cleaned even if they are freeformed locs. Hair will naturally knot if you don’t comb the knots and tangles out so you don’t have to walk around with dirty hair. Locs don’t damage your hair unless your maintenance is damaging

You just need to know how to properly take care of them. After each wash you re-twist the lock and dry them under a hooded dryer or a dryer of some sort. Its just hair if you treat it right it will treat you right.

It deff depends on different peoples hair texture too because I know myself to up keep my hair is pretty easy I just twist my roots and eventually it will lock. One thing you've got to bear in mind is that it's easier for a Black person to comb out their dreadlocks because the hair 'locks' due to the curl pattern and texture of their hair, and it's not just backcombed/rolled/crocheted like a white persons dreads

My bestie has been growing her own hair semi locks style and it is so much work, washing her hair takes an hour + drying her fair fully (she lives in Europe so its cold) can take up to 3 days, after she applies all that needs to be applied for her locks to look pretty and they look really pretty I must say. Knowing a lot of ppl with locks (since am from the Caribbean) I can vouch that they take extra more care for us who don't have it ^^
I have dreads but I wash & oil my scalp plus my dreads 1x a week. So yeah, he probably has been washing them.

@@actinggirl333 On average you're supposed to wash your hair only two to three times a week. Anymore than that and you are over washing and drying out your hair. It also depends on the person's hair though. I wash my hair every two days or every other day because of how dry my hair and scalp is.

Suzanne H I don’t have dreadlocks and I wash my hair once, maybe twice a week. It’s less dry and feels and looks more healthy since I stopped washing it like 3/4 times a week.

God, I hate that comment. (no offence though) Dreads are not dirty, you can go on your merry way and wash them as often as you want to. Most my deadhead friends' hair smelled better than other people's because they used a bunch of essential oils and all that nifty things, to keep their head healthy, and I do the same. I can wash my scalp with no apparent problem and I'm having dreads for the third time in my life.

You usually cannot donate dreads. To make a wig you have to have healthy long hair, and they make the wig hairpiece by hairpiece, so i don't think a wig company would bother undreading the hair even if it was healthy.

You can keep them and reattach them if you want them again or you can sell them for a looooot of money because just like I said, you can just add them to your dreads

Outpat Black people have different hair textures and seem to generally be 'drier' than most white people, I would imagine that would dramatically change how hairstyles work. Calm down, it's so embarrassing when white people get upset about black people talking about black people.

Henrique Mendonça it actually only had to do with texture, usually black people can only wash their hair every other day because there’s less oil in our hair, but when you have locs, you can actually wash it as often as possible to keep the hair in place/clean because the oils aren’t as necessary with dreads

Sidney Hills wax will cause build up of oils & other residues. This can potentially lead to mold forming. Clean dreadlocks with simple residue free products & palm rolling is your best bet.
Sidney Hills that’s not true at all. I have locs and I use a regular clarifying shampoo and my African black soap as a moisturizing shampoo.... I never used wax in my hair and never will. It causes build up and is unnecessary. Some people use it because they don’t know any better or their hair is bone straight and even then you can back comb and not use wax
Brad Mondo you can actually as your hair grows out the scalp is just like regular hair before you get it re-locked ... it just doesn't feel as loose while washing as when you take it out it's a different feeling while washing but you get all of the scalp (black locs at least that's the only experience I've had ik white/straight hair has to do it differently)
Lol people with locs definitely have clean scalps! This just goes to show that cosmetology studies do not in any vastness cover styling or caring for the hair of people of African decent or people with textured hair. It also clearly doesn’t cover styles historically worn by such peoples. This is sad. Although, I must say I still enjoy his videos, and we can’t blame him for misinformation. I’d like to see him try faux locs! It’d be cute on him!

I wash my scalp everyday and I have a few dreads, going full head pretty soon. The important part is to dry them the whole way so you don't get dreadrot. If you don't wash they will fall out as well. Not washing dreadlocks is a horrible rumor.
We don't use any horrible products on our hair either unlike undreaded hair. We can't use anything with residue, no sulfates, parabens, wax, and no palm . You are to only was scalp and let the soap wash though the dreadlocks.
