Such a npc robotic phrase. I have to hear every single time I walk past someone when I'm done fishing. "Catch anything?" Followed by "better than being at work" (hahaha I'm 40 and white laughing) I just say wow never heard that before after the 1000th time it's soul crushing.

Hey I'm new to your channel I have watched some of your videos in the past. I'm a disabled veteran, I can get around pretty good but I can't walk long distances so I like places where I can pull up unload sit down and fish. I don't carry my stuff far to fish. I'm 58 years old but I've always loved fishing. I'm always watching different videos of different people and see what they're doing and you're doing. Always trying to learn new stuff to help me catch fish. Enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for all you do.

I'm up here in Maryland I mainly fish stoney creek which is in Anne Arundel county . I have been fishing this area for around 8 year now and I have pay close attention to the catfish patterns. Usually they go into the spawn between the first and second week of June but this year the water got up to 65 degrees by the third week of May so they started spawn early. Last week me and my fishing buddy amount of catch started Increasing. Now just this morning I went out and caught 12 catfish in 3 hours so it starting to look promising up. Thank you for the content and info you share with us I'm a fan and over the years you have Taught me a lot.

Last week I pulled fresh crappie, perch, chicken and frozen shad I had from earlier in the year for 7 hours…from 10ft to 60ft. ..5mph to .8mph…flats, creeks, Chan ‘em edge, middle of channel…1 lonely 5lber😢. Happens to me every June and I’m finally accepting of it. Gives us more time to surf this month anyways! Tight lines out there!

Many fish are often biting like crazy post spawn. Thing is they tend to scatter out in their search for food before setting up house and congregating on predictable structure. Dragging from a boat would cover more water finding scattered fish more than anything else IMO.

I've found the best way to fish a mayfly hatch is to hang a big bright light close to the water , on a snag , and stay as far as practically possible from that light , and still fish l under that light .
Use a whole bream or shad , the cats really don't care , they will slam almost anything .
The light keeps enough of the flies away from you so you can at least breathe .
Do NOT turn on another light source , unless you want to be instantly covered in a swarm of mayflies .

Hitting smaller waters when the big water warms up and the spawn starts , will keep you in the action , at least until those smaller waters hit the magic temperature as well .
With some luck and persistence you can keep on the fish , and minimize getting skunked . But it happens to us all eventually , so don't be afraid to just cut the grass or target other species while the bite is generally way off .
Or just scout some new water and not worry about getting bit .

Water temp below Richmond on the James is about 87-88. Would they still be spawning?

    • @DieterMelhorn
      @DieterMelhorn  7 месяцев назад +1

Water temperature plays less of a roll than the amount of daylight in my opinion. I don't know that fishery and its spawning calendar, BUT, generally speaking these east coast fisheries start earlier closer to the coast and later inland. For example, my guess is that Santee Cooper is past the spawn and into summertime fishing patterns compared to here.

Watched your vid at 330am (think you posted last night). On the water (Potomac) 530am. 730am son landed 8lb blue - she was in 10ft, in mud and definitely spawn. We used your drift method and tackle and (strawberry chicken). She inhaled the entire setup to the back of her throat - float was in her teeth. We were just lucky but thanks for managing our expectations- 2 other dinks so we went swimming instead. Thanks Dieter!

I liked subbed and notified, should of done it sooner. Here in Bedford Va. The weather has been terrible, as in Hot and a little hotter, and no rain whatsoever. Too hot to fish, too hot to even sit outside. I'm talking Texas hot. Yesterday it was almost 80* at 6 am. That aught to clue you in. No way am I sitting out in that kind of weather. Just bought #2 reels and rods guess I'll have to turn into strictly a cat fisher now. Back is gone. Bought #2 10-foot ugly sticks and #2 Penn #8000 spinning reels. Question for you ""D""I got #30 lb yellow braid, #2 people have told me to soak the braid in hot water for 10 mins then spool it on your reel, no knots or coiling if you do that. Is that true?????? Thank you in advance should you respond ...!!!

Thanks for the super informative video Dieter! Down at my local spot (The Catwalk in York haven PA on the Susquehanna) the anglers always seem to be catching fish left and right every night (less catfish than normal right now), but I’ve been going down since January and haven’t caught a single fish yet. I’m using 2 ugly stick catfishing rods with KastKing Rover 70s on them using santee cooper rigs. I’m starting to think maybe the fish recognize when I’m casting out and stay away from ONLY my hook. Lol. Main bait is bluegill.

@@DieterMelhorn I've had a terrible time catching decent post spawn crappie this year. Usually bridges and deeper stumps and structure close to channels are my go to until they start moving a little bit more shallow again in the fall. This year has been a really hard slog through nothing but dinks no matter the depth. I honestly don't know where the bigger Crappie are right now, or if they are where I think they are, they are simply not biting on minnows or artificial. I've spent hours at old haunts or side scanning and thinking I have found them, but they just aren't interested apparently.

When you hear someone say the catfish are "down" it doesn't mean they are deep. It means they are spawning and its time to catch crappie.

Short sweet to the point. It’s spawn time and if you don’t have a boat. You are lucky to land 10 plus pounders. Hell you’ll probably only catch females for a while.
