Hi. I am watching your channel from Australia. Love your reviews, The couple approach from two people who enjoy a good drive is very refreshing. I am glad to see you finally have got to experience the Ranger. It is the best seller in Australia. Whilst full-size trucks are growing in Australia, the mid-size is the largest segment here. For everyday use, the mid-size is popular for tradies and families. The latest Ranger was developed with VW's Amarok. I'm not sure you get that in Canada/USA. We get the Raptor as well in exactly the same spec as you do. The hero engine in the Ranger is the V6 diesel as we do not get petrol versions as the price of fuel here is high. That being said, the VW Amarok gets an Ecoboust 2.3T in its halo model. Ford also does an SUV version of the Ranger here called tge Everest, which also sells well here. This is my first comment on your channel, and I felt compelled to say something after seeing this review. Keep up the good work. I am sure you guys would love Australia if you had the chance to visit.

Great review guys 👍👍I know you like the 2.7 EcoBoost Engine. But I read an article about the direct fuel injection that's causing carbon deposits on intake valves. Also causes engine performance issues like weaker performance, increased fuel consumption, and rough idling. Also early models of the 2.7L engine had oil pans which are made of plastic with poor sealings. Have you heard any news on this? Keep up the great work!! 👍
From ‘15 to’17 the 2.7 had only direct injection. It could soot up the intake valves. Ford rectified the situation by including port injection to keep the valves clean I 2018. Now there is no problems. And some of the oil pans leaked but ford has replaced the ones that leaked with a new redesigned pan and seal
PHEV, the middle way. My sedan, with 455 HP and a 41 mile battery, more than triples the mpg of my last 240HP ICE. This is explained in the AAA Foundation Driving Survey, which found that the average trip is 12.3 miles, 2.44 times a day. The engine in my PHEV starts maybe 5 or 6 times a month, for the longer drives. I do fine around town on electric, the motor can deliver 451 lbs ft to the rear wheels instantaneously. Over a 2 year period I burned 199 gallons.
I must say last year I drove both the Tacoma and Ranger extensively as those where my shortlisted midsize trucks. The Ranger totally impressed me and I was all gung ho to buy a Tacoma. I ordered the Ranger I was so impressed. Better ride, more comfortable and nicer integrated interior that didn’t look like a tablet mounted on the dash. As well every bump I hit in the Tacoma the hood had ‘bounce’ and was very distracting… felt cheap.
I am a die hard Toyota guy and currently drive a 2009 Tacoma TRD. If I were shopping for a new truck to replace it, I wouldn't even visit a Toyota dealer. This new Ranger and the Nissan Frontier that you mentioned would be in consideration. Also, keyless ignitions may be convenient for you, but they are also convenient for thieves. I wonder if there would be so many new Toyota Tundras stolen if they still had keyed ignitions.
Around here, you can't give a new Tundra away. Nobody wants them LOL same with the Tacoma. Toyota needs to step away from the Truck manufacturing and concentrate on hybrid SUVs and sedans which they excel at making. Toyota was the go to small truck form factor manufacture 20 years ago. Since then they have all been duds, I know, had both Gen 2 and Gen 3 Tacoma 4wd. Real turds both of them.
I am indifferent about the key vs push button. I can take it or leave it. I'm also not totally brand loyal. I downsized from a Ram to a 2024 Ranger. However, due to really bad experiences with import brands, I won't but any import brand vehicles. I love the my new Ranger and really enjoy driving it. I find it to be a perfect fit for me and it has exceeded my expectations. Full-size trucks have grown too big and I got tired of having to get on a ladder just to wash the hood of my 2012 Ram.
I have the 2.3 XLT FX4 and it rules. I don't tow but haul a bunch of stuff (dirt bikes, dog hunting gear, dump runs), occasionally. The 4x4 actuates super fast. Torque of the 2.3 is great. 2.7 sounds great but I'd probably spring for the Raptor if I wanted more truck.
I like the fact that this is port injection as well. Fuel gets washed over the valves to help cleanoff some the carbon build up. The 2.3L is only port injected
When I was shopping in the segment, I wanted to really like the Ranger, but ultimately decided to get the Tacoma for two main reasons. First being able to have a 6 foot bed and second not having engine start stop technology.
I just got one I love the xlt v6 ftx I traded off my maverick 2.0 it was fine but this this is kick ass . I love my Key you can have the keyless crap the power is unreal
Ive always been a chevy guy mainley because I got raised in a all chevy family but the best truck I ever had was a 2000 ranger. Ranger was my 1st new truck and had it for 15 yrs 200,000 miles. Ditching my 3rd gen colorado to many problems with the 8 speed trans so looking for a new truck and narrowed it down to frontier and ranger. Test driving I like how the ranger handles and the v6 power is fun! I like the frontier because its offered in a v6 ex cab 6ft bed option. I think if ford would of offerd the ranger in a shorter extended cab obtion with a 6ft bed and the 2.7 v6 I would of already bought one and IMO would be the best mid sized truck to buy.
Before the Rangers were back on the market, I put down $500. When they finally came out, I drove one and I wasn’t impressed with the engine option or lack of options and the price was ridiculous. I decided to keep my F150, more comfortable and powerful.
@@jackg7225 The F150 comes in single, extended, and crew cab configurations plus a ton of trim options. Too bad the Ranger comes in only crew cab, shorter bed, and thus higher price. The previous generation came in extended cab and under $30,000.
Regarding the comparison between the F-150 and the Ranger, depending on trim, the pricing differential is a legitimate concern. However, many if not most Ranger buyers I would guess are purchasing on the basis of preferred size - to Andrea's point about garageability but also overall handiness, driving and parking in the city Etc, and I would think efficiency of operation. In apples to apples configurations, the F-150 still has a much larger footprint, and is just bigger overall including height and being about 18 inches wheelbase and 20 inches longer overall and 5 inches wider in track width, not insignificant figures when you just want small(er).
A couple of questions: 1. Does the physical key make the truck harder to steal? 2. Does the FX4 package make the ride more comfortable than the regular suspension?
Short bed would rule it out for me, but that’s what the market wants, even in full size trucks. As long as at least one company keeps offering longer bed options if you want a pickup for hauling stuff! And I’ll vote for a simple, cheap key.
Agreed. I guess I’m old-school, but the definition of “truck” should be a vehicle with a cargo area being the biggest part of the “truck.” Everything else is a truck wanna be. My 1995 Dakota (8’ bed, V6, original clutch) is still getting the job done at 280,000 miles. (The optimum truck is one you don’t worry about getting dinged.)
Good review, my 2025 XLT FX4 2.7 is scheduled to be built February and I’m so looking forward to receiving likely March April. The key fob… and heated steering wheel unavailable in the XLT that’s my only ‘ugh’.
@@Motormouth...about the key thing, it’s way easier than you may think, less chances of being broken in and it’s convienient especially in cold weather here in Canada.
I find the Maverick to be getting to expensive. Just to get things that come standard in other vehicles you have to pay for it. Before you know it you’re getting close to 50 grand. There are vehicles you can get with heated seats, steering wheel, blind spot monitoring etc for 35 -40 grand. Ford makes you pay extra.. in 2023 I thought about ordering a Maverick. One of the reasons I didn’t is the vehicle I did buy was more bang for my buck.
No matter how much I like the Ranger I cannot justify the price. My brother-in-law has the old Ford Ranger the last year in production V6 engine rear wheel drive only but with automatic transmission and air conditioning came out the door with taxes $16500 in Toronto. With a few options the current Ranger is $60000 after tax. Insane. And that 2.7 L turbo is never going to last as long as the old V6. Car companies are going to stop being able to sell any cars eventually.
One of the biggest reasons I got my f150 is because of the aluminum body. I would still be driving my ‘98 dodge Ram if the body had not started to rust, it still ran great when selling it 3 yrs ago
We in Brazil have a better option yet! My Ranger is a Limited+ (Lariat with all the options) with a Powerstroke 3.0 V6 Diesel 250 hp and 450 lbft, key less entry and button start/stop, adaptive cruise and active lane keep assist, 360° cameras with front camera for of road. Option for 2WD, AWD, 4High, 4 Low, rear lock differential all mated with 10 speed auto.
Ford needs to add the option of a heated steering wheel on the XLT trim in the Ranger, F-150 and Super Duty trucks. Its an option in the Maverick XLT and base trim Escapes.
From a value standpoint the Ranger is in no-mans-land. The F150 has been overproduced and i am sure deals are available below MSRP, so the Ranger is going to sell low quantities. The Ranger Raptor is the best vehicle Ford makes. An incredible machine, i wish i had a use for it.
I have a 21 F150 with that 2.7. I get the same or better MPG with a bigger truck. And mine is the XLT Sport package. Just couldn’t justify being in the smaller truck at the same MPG and price point when I bought mine used 60 days ago.
It's too bad Ford doesn't offer the extended cab anymore for those who only want a work truck and longer bed. Ford makes really weird decisions at times.
Good call. It's likely where my money would go. It's a proven vehicle with rock solid reliability and resale value. As tempting as this vehicle may be, it's no longer the value it used to be (in 1989, Rangers in Canada were between $9,000 and $16,000 depending on trim and options instead of $53k for a mid-trim equipped version today). Also, Ford Ecoboost engines (and now the 5.0L V8) use a belt driven oil pump which is an engine failure waiting to happen when it fails (which many are starting to). While you can get it inspected and replace it (if you catch it before it fails and destroys your engine), it is a very expensive job to do. No idea why they went this way, there was really no reason to use it, other than to set a timer for a future failure point.
I own a 2022 Ridgeline and have put 55,000km on it and it's been an excellent truck for our lifestyle. We didn't need a full size truck anymore so we drove all the mid size trucks and the Honda suited us the best. In my opinion it's also the best handling truck (on road of course) and is very stable and confidence inspiring in winter weather conditions (we live in the Cochrane district) of northern Ontario. We don't go off roading but we probably take ours down more logging roads and bush trails than the average Joe and as long as you don't exceed it's intended use you'll find it capable to accomplish many tasks. If I need to off road I bring my 750 Suzuki King Quad along for the tour.
It is a huge improvement over the last generation and looks alot more high end to! Ford should put a hybrid driveline in the Ranger condescending Tacoma has an option for it
Exactly. I think most people pass on midsized trucks because they can cost as much as full size we bought ours because it has similar capabilities in a smaller, more maneuverable package.
This is one of the few reviews that talk about the powertrain of a vehicle nowadays. Most of the other RUclipsrs seem to only care about how big the wheels, sun roofs and screens are; how many cup holders, speakers, sensors, cameras.....That's why the quality and reliability of automobiles are going down to the toilet, including Toyotas because all car manufacturers are focusing on electronics not mechanical parts anymore. If this is the trend, car manufacturers will keep adding on more high tech electronics, refrigerators, microwaves, washer & dryers, wood, leather to the vehicles while reducing the costs of powertrains by putting even worse than Jatco CVTs and Ecoboost 3-cyl engines. Maybe one day, here in the states, we are all sitting in a super high tech 3 wheel (cost savings on 1 wheel) cabinet powered by a single cylinder quad turbo engine with the worst than Jatco CVT transmission or electric motor that gives you less than hundred mile range ( why only hundred mile range? cuz all electricity goes into the high tech stuff and the fridge, microwave, washer & dryer...). At the end of the day, nobody knows how to fix these high tech cabinets but to trash them every 2 years. Car manufacturers can sell more industrial trash by meeting EPA's more stringent requirements to further "protect"our environment. This is a win-win situation for all parties. Consumers are the only losers in this game.
Jeep Gladiator & Honda Ridgeline have a V6. If I’d get a Ranger, I’d definitely get the V6. I don’t like that there is no sunroof, power rear sliding window, push button start outside of the lariat trim. Prices are high like every other truck. The styling is SAFE but agreeable with most. The bed is too small.
Nice review, although I disagree with your complaints on the key. Wish we could go back to cheaper keys. I don't mind sticking my key in the ignition. ... Thought Chevy did away with that base output and made the 310 hp standard?
Exactly my thoughts. Operation wise there isn't much difference between a key and push button key fob. but there's a huge price difference if you were to replace them !!!
I miss keyless entry. I got tired of using the key to open the door every time. I had to put my grocery bags on the ground and I just found it inconvenient. For those who don't do big grocery shops, it's not a big deal I suppose.
@@andreaspencer9813grocery carts for the win when shopping and then use your key to open the trunk and not so easy to break in when it comes to car thefts
Having to use a regular key again actually wouldn't bother me that much. If you can get a moonroof in the FX4 4wd package, that would be enough for me.
The pricing difference between the Ranger, and the F-150 was what killed the sales of the Ranger back in the day. I know, because I chose the F-150 over the Ranger in 1997. Seems like Ford never learns as here we go again with the same pricing deal. Of couse now the Ranger is near the size of my 1997 F-150.
Big vehicles are no more expensive to make than small vehicles. It takes the same time to bolt the whole thing together. The only difference is the amount of material used, and that's where the price difference comes. Hence, the F150 is only slightly dearer.
I meant a wet oil pump belt that can fail early and result in zero oil pressure. Better choice is the Nissan if you plan on keeping the pick up for a few years. That being said, I would never buy a used Ford Ranger.
No need to be scared of the wet oil belt as there has never been a failure yet and no maintenance required. And a Nissan is not that a reliable vehicle
I wonder if they fixed the smoke on start up at certain temperatures. The 2.7 Eco-Boost F150 I had It used fill my driveway with smoke. Was kind of embarrassing starting up in a busy parking lot. For the price I’d stick with the F150, the back seats in the F150 are super handy for road trips.

And some of the oil pans leaked but ford has replaced the ones that leaked with a new redesigned pan and seal
Thank you for the update 😊
Its a big hit i n Romania. Rangers are everywhere, and Rapors are a common sight here.
Very interesting. Thanks.
I have the 2.7 in the F-150. Gets crazy gas mileage and tows my trailer easily. My average (not towing) is 9L/100kM or 31 MPG (26 MPG, US gallons).
Great truck, I am looking forward to Ford bringing the PHEV variant to Canada
PHEV, the middle way. My sedan, with 455 HP and a 41 mile battery, more than triples the mpg of my last 240HP ICE. This is explained in the AAA Foundation Driving Survey, which found that the average trip is 12.3 miles, 2.44 times a day. The engine in my PHEV starts maybe 5 or 6 times a month, for the longer drives. I do fine around town on electric, the motor can deliver 451 lbs ft to the rear wheels instantaneously. Over a 2 year period I burned 199 gallons.
The Ford Everest, which is the suv version of the Ranger should be offered in North America.
I like having the key
Considering how many cars with no key are being stolen these days, maybe it's a good idea to have a key.
Agree completely
I'll stick with a keyed ignition thanks.
I prefer a key over a pushbutton, especially with the keypad entry. You can hide a key on the truck when in the wild. Very, very useful.
Much much better deal than the new Tacoma.
The Tundra had excellent and (I believe) record sales in the USA despite the criticism by social media influencers. The market frequently knows best.
@@RSwrightMD In regard to reliability, how does the market know best when the vehicle is new?
@@RSwrightMDAgree 100 percent that the market knows best. Ford F-150 outsells the TunderTurd by you guessed it: 3 to 1. TY for proving my point ;-)
@@RSwrightMD it was perceived reliability that would sell them
I am indifferent about the key vs push button.
Well, you want some buttons instead of all integrated function, so you get a real key to go with as well. Nice!
The carbon buildup was caused by only having direct injection. The port injection cleans the valves
Love this truck it's just the right size
When they relauched, the base Ranger was at least $5K CAD more expensive than the old base F150, from that point I lost interest.
I totally agree, I prefer the size of the Ranger over the F-150. I don't find the larger pickup convenient in the city.
I would think that the ranger with the 2.7 would get better mpg with it being smaller, my f150 supercrew with same engine gets better mpg of 20/26
I hate push button start to be fully honest.
A couple of questions: 1. Does the physical key make the truck harder to steal? 2. Does the FX4 package make the ride more comfortable than the regular suspension?
I am not certain but I think vehicles with keys are harder to steal. I prefer keys actually.
Is it less likley to get stolen with a key
I belief so especially with today's hackers.
The FX4 package is just tires and skid plates with the locking diff if not already optioned. It is the exact same suspension with no tuning I believe.
Love the ranger 😍
Honda doesn't have a v6 in the Ridgeline?
Reviewers could have two categories, best pickup truck and best pickup truck for hauling things.
Good review, my 2025 XLT FX4 2.7 is scheduled to be built February and I’m so looking forward to receiving likely March April. The key fob… and heated steering wheel unavailable in the XLT that’s my only ‘ugh’.
It's crazy that you can't get a heated steering wheel with that trim, seems like it should be standard.
@@Motormouth...about the key thing, it’s way easier than you may think, less chances of being broken in and it’s convienient especially in cold weather here in Canada.
I noticed that one fog light comes on when you have the turn signals on. Is that a Canadian thing? 🤔
I like the key as well. I dont maybe im old school. Happy with my XLT 2.7L that is alot of engine for a smaller vehicle.
Key for the win, my 2020 Corolla LE still has the key, even 2025 Corolla sedans the L and LE trim still has the key ignition as well
I find the Maverick to be getting to expensive.
I’m curious, what vehicle are you talking about with heated seats, heated steering wheel, blind spot monitoring , etc for $35-$40k?
No matter how much I like the Ranger I cannot justify the price.
My brother-in-law has the old Ford Ranger the last year in production V6 engine rear wheel drive only but with automatic transmission and air conditioning came out the door with taxes $16500 in Toronto.
With a few options the current Ranger is $60000 after tax.
Insane.
And that 2.7 L turbo is never going to last as long as the old V6.
Car companies are going to stop being able to sell any cars eventually.
Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size truck with a v6 no?
Honda Ridgeline?
A Ridgeline is not considered a truck as it has no frame, it’s a unibody
@@pathunter7003 Yeah yeah we all know.
@ with your comment you sounded confused
@@pathunter7003 No,, I consider it a truck. Yes it is unibody.
The other big difference between the Ranger and the F 150 is the use of aluminum.
Wish we could get a diesel in 🇨🇦
Can you get a manual transmission in a ford ranger in Brazil?
@@thomaslindsay1967 Yes, but only in the base 2.0 four cylinder
Ford needs to add the option of a heated steering wheel on the XLT trim in the Ranger, F-150 and Super Duty trucks. Its an option in the Maverick XLT and base trim Escapes.
From a value standpoint the Ranger is in no-mans-land. The F150 has been overproduced and i am sure deals are available below MSRP, so the Ranger is going to sell low quantities. The Ranger Raptor is the best vehicle Ford makes. An incredible machine, i wish i had a use for it.
That’s the case for all midsize trucks that’s why the American brands don’t really care about the midsize truck market.
Is the Jeep Gladiator not considered midsized? Or is it no longer a V6? 🤔
Ridgeline V6, AWD, multi opening tailgate, good payload, roomy and great ride. Why is it so overlooked?
Because Honda has taken a back seat to realibilty just like every major brand has
It's not a real truck being unibody and all
because it's not a real truck!😜
Nicely Done! How would you compare the ride and drive quality when compared to a similarly equipped Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon? Kindly, Graham.
Wouldn't it make more sense to have all trim levels.use push button start?
No. Make it option only for push button start
One question: was Zac wearing depends while you were off roading? Looks like he needed to.
It did appear he had some leakage of some sort
It is a huge improvement over the last generation and looks alot more high end to!
Ford should put a hybrid driveline in the Ranger condescending Tacoma has an option for it
Would an inline 5 be a good niche engine for Trucks? Maybe Dodge revive the Slant 6?
It was a great design for Volvo. I bought my ‘98 in ‘98. Still great.
Some people just want to drive smaller vehicles due to circumstances/preference and not because of pricing.
The Ranger is already quite big, no need to go to F-150
Exactly. I think most people pass on midsized trucks because they can cost as much as full size we bought ours because it has similar capabilities in a smaller, more maneuverable package.
@@davidjym there is a need to go to a f150 if you need a longer bed and the ability to carry 4x8 sheet materials
Why no sunroof
I have the '24 FX4 version and I Love it ! I really could not care less if I have to use a key... Life has Much bigger issues the way I see it..
At over $56,000 CAD for our test model, it should have push button start with keyless entry.
Is the Honda Ridgeline not mid-sized with 6 cyl?
Correction there are two more mid size trucks with v6 engine nissan frontier and Honda ridgeline
I might need to tow a trailer some time. Get full size instead?
keys Are Good!
10:39: “touchscreen incorporated nicely into the dash.” Obviously influenced by Volvo.

I need a larger bed in back. Does it come with a larger bed? What about head room and seat comfort for a long waisted person?
Best selling vehicle in America is the F150 . Best selling vehicle in Australia is the Ranger. Ford does great trucks.
Ford and domestic car companies do trucks the best.
Zack may not be a fan of the key in the Ranger (too old school, I guess), but how would he feel about it having a CD player?
Having to use a regular key again actually wouldn't bother me that much. If you can get a moonroof in the FX4 4wd package, that would be enough for me.
The pricing difference between the Ranger, and the F-150 was what killed the sales of the Ranger back in the day. I know, because I chose the F-150 over the Ranger in 1997. Seems like Ford never learns as here we go again with the same pricing deal. Of couse now the Ranger is near the size of my 1997 F-150.
I really like the idea of this truck but when it come down to it, I’d probably go with a maverick (I think it even has a larger interior) or an F150
This or the Frontier???
Was the left fog light burnt out when you were reviewing the truck? Looks to be out in a couple shots.
I saw that too, but rewatching it looks like the driver's side turned on when the turn signal turned on. Is that some new safety feature?
Big vehicles are no more expensive to make than small vehicles. It takes the same time to bolt the whole thing together. The only difference is the amount of material used, and that's where the price difference comes. Hence, the F150 is only slightly dearer.
I meant a wet oil pump belt that can fail early and result in zero oil pressure. Better choice is the Nissan if you plan on keeping the pick up for a few years. That being said, I would never buy a used Ford Ranger.
No need to be scared of the wet oil belt as there has never been a failure yet and no maintenance required. And a Nissan is not that a reliable vehicle
can we get a ranger single cab/king cab? that crew cab looks ridiculous..
You failed to mention the Honda Ridgeline also has a V6. Personally I think the Ridgeline is a nicer truck. What are your thoughts?? Thanks
Unibody. Apples and oranges.
What is the real mpg?

Really how much extra would it cost in production for the push button?Keep up the good work you two👍
They should make it option only
How long does the head gasket last
Love the Ranger but will wait until they offer HUD and ventilated seats before looking to buy one.
You can get the Ford performance kit and get 45hp extra only drawback you got to use premium gas...
If it really did smoke as you say, you should have taken it into the dealership
