    Great to see you back with another video. Always logical reviews, appreciate your thoughts. The 16mm 1.4 I have been eyeing, but more for indoor use, but I would definitely use it for street too. Sometimes, often indoors The 23mm is not wide enough. Can I ask are you still using the Sony too for street? Wondering with similar aperture lenses how much bigger/heavier the Sony is. Thanks again for the video.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards 5 лет назад

      The 16 1.4 is a lovely lens - no doubt about it. But the size of the 2.8 makes it a winner for me. I've got to take it with me if I'm ever going to use it! :)
      Not on Sony anymore. Woke up one day a couple months back and realized I needed to be back on Fuji. Literally - got out of bed and my first thought was, "You know, I should just sell everything and get a Fuji again!"
      So now I'm happily using Fuji for my stills and video production. The X-T3 will definitely last me until I get my next camera! ;)

      Street Shootr thanks for the info and reply. I have never used a full frame. Just apsc Nikon d7100 and the Fuji xt2. Would like to compare xt2 with a full frame side by side to see the difference. I would like to see how much cleaner the higher iso shots would be and to see if there is much more detail and cleanness in the shadows. It’s hard to tell the difference in RUclips videos, and I have not seen anybody share raw file examples between the two in the same shot scenario

    I like your clear explanation and it's of great help! I don't like your shadows everywhere it makes the word look way more depressing than it actually is... would it be a good addition to the 18-55mm kit lens, when I want to travel light and usually like to shoot whole, squares, whole streets and landscapes? I'm a noob, but isn't 16mm already very close to 18mm from the kit lens? Your reply would be much appreciated!

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards 5 лет назад

      Hi Viewtolove - and thanks for the feedback! 16mm is definitely "close" to 18mm in field of view but it still has its own unique vibe. I'd personally avoid using a zoom lens for shooting street photography though - always found them to be too clunky and always in the way of my creative process... But that's just me!

  • @JohnKrill

    From the early 60s on I used a 28mm lens almost always, including street. Like your suggestion I put the lens at some convenient distance mark and shot, shot, shot and left the aperture at f11. When I get my 16mm f2.8 I will probably do the same thing.

      Hyperfocal is definitely the way to go with an ultra wide like the 16mm... The hyperfocal charts say 6 feet for this lens on APS-C but I found I had to set my in camera distance scale to closer to 8 to get infinity to be in focus. Must have been an accuracy thing with the distance scale...

    I know about zone shooting but not quite sure how to set the autofocus to facilitate it. Aside from shooting around ISO 400 in daylight at f8, I really have no clue how to preset the lens to be focusing at a general 6 feet or 12 feet aside from doing it in my previous shot. 28&50. My favorite combo. When I shot fuji I had the 16f1.4. Great IQ but just way too wide. It’s huge and really heavy. For a special use focal length it’s not worth carrying that thing so I sold it after a few months. The 35f2 is also very tiny and I missed it when I sold it. If you want a big Fuji lens better get the 56f1.2. Or get a zoom.
    Then Fuji decided to update the 18 with the 18f1.4! Why? Who is clamoring with a 18f1.4? Still no 18f2. They should make an 18f2.8.

    Hi! Thanks for your review! I got this lens for street and travel photography mainly, but I had a bad first experience with it: it misses the focus a few times, at f/2.8 and 4 as well, so I got blurred images with really nothing in focus. Moreover, I was not satisfied with sharpness. Maybe this lens is not made for street photography with moving subjects (walking people in my case) or...may I have a bad copy of this lens? I wouldn’t mind a redesign since I love the focal length and could use a WR version. To me the 18 is underrated and better than the 23f2. Congress needs to pass a law outlawing the use of MM for lenses focal length and convert it to angle of view. This way it would make no difference what the size of the sensor is. People would be given 6 months to convert. After that anyone still using MM’s will be subject to 6 months in prison. Too extreme? Okay, 90 day.

    • @Thomas_Geist
      @Thomas_Geist 3 года назад

      @S Tra Yeah. Unfortunately when small cameras like Leica started becoming popular with pros 35mm film was all there was for a long time. It’s not like there weren’t other formats out there. I wish someone had come up with the idea of describing a lens by the angle of view.

    • @bunmeng007
      @bunmeng007 2 года назад

      @S Tra well cuz FF is the standard back in the day and still is today. It puts everyone on the same page when describing the focal length.

    • @Thomas_Geist
      @Thomas_Geist 2 года назад

      Here’s the problem with attaching some number to a lens and thinking that tells you something: I have heard many people (who should know better) uing the term,”normal,” refer to the angle of view. For example, 50mm is normal on a FF sensor or 35mm film. Then, using the angle of view, these same people refer to a 35mm lens on a crop sensor is normal or something like a 65mm on a medium format, normal.
      These people have no idea what the term, “NORMAL,” is refering to. It is NOT the angle of view. What it is refering to is the depth of field or the spacial relationship of objects in the forground and background. Obviously a telephoto lends compresses the space relationship between objects and a wide angle spreads the objects out to where there appears more space between objects then there is, OR the NORMAL say the human eye sees the space.
      A 50-55mm lens is roughly the way the eye sees the spacial relatioinship between objects. It does not matter what the size of the sensor is. A 50mm lens is, “normal,” on a micro 4/3, ceop, FF or medium format. That’s the dirty little secret companies like Olympus and other Micro 4/3 cameras don’t tell people. Sure, you can get a 50mm lens that will reproduce an image the way the eye sees but you only get the angle of view as a 100mm lens on a FF.
      Clear a mud? A 50mm lens on a medium format has that, “medium format look,” because the objects in the image looks like the way the eye would see it but has the angle of view of roughly a 35mm lens on a FF. This is the real advantage of a medium format camera, not just cramming more pixles in and creating a huge file. Larger field of view but it looks, “NORMAL.”
      I hate it when people use terms like, “normal,” and don’t have a clue what they are talking about. they put that warning message on convex side view mirrors on cars for a reason. “WARNING, OBJECTS MAY BE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.” No…objects ARE closer than they appear. Thhink of it this way: A 50mm lens is like a flat mirror and the size of the sensor has nothing at all to do with it.

    24mm knocks out 28mm. It always does IF the 24mm is optically at least OK++ Getting back to this 16mm... don't you think it's overpriced? Double it and you can get 16/1.4!

      Look at it another way and it's only half the price of the 16mm f1.4 :) I really think they got the price right on this one. Build quality is amazing and the image quality is solid when stopped down a bit...

    Bresson shot with 35mm

      It's possible he used a 35 at some point in his career but he's well known for shooting with a 50.

    If you’re getting a commission, how can this be an unbiased review?

      I typically only review products that I like... So if you consider that biased then guilty as charged!

      Yummy Tech I change cameras quite often but stuck with the Sony for the past year and a half... jumped back to the Fuji XT3 for video and photos and I’m loving it a lot... The Ricoh GRiii just showed up for review and now I’m super tempted by that too! It never ends!!
