How do the Gears Work in a Transmission?

Take a look at the 'inside scoop' of a small 6-speed manual transmission. They aren't all exactly the same, but this one is from a lawn mower which makes it fairly simple and easy to investigate.

I absolutely love taking things apart literally to see how they work. My first item was my granny’s alarm clock. One of the old ones with the bells on top. Yep. I got a righteous whoopin for that. It did teach me that springs suck.
