  • Obviously interested in the new CT125. Just thought I'd do a quick video roughly comparing the old CT with the new CT. Just hope it comes to the UK.

Same here, I'd love to have the bike in the US. Your adventures on Dorothy and Ed March's on "90" have shown just how versatile these bikes truly are. I'd buy one for sure.

I was very happy to see Honda come out with the CT 125 .The reason is finally a small dual purpose bike with ability to go over 55 mph.I hope it stays basic like old 90/110.I will consider one in the future .Although here in the states most people think you need a 900cc to drive more than 1 mile from home. In the future more could think differently...I ride all over on a 150cc scooter and rode trail 90's years ago.Still have a Honda I bought new 1985,it has been a great machine..

Excellent review and insight. I live in Florida where we can ride year round. Since the Monkey and Super Cub release I've seen '1' Super Cub on the road, which was a couple days ago bring driven by an elderly lady who showed up to see if her side stand for the bike arrived yet (case in point, it should have came with a side stand as well as the center stand in the first place for that cost). And I've seen '1' Monkey... driven by me. I've seen loads of them sitting in the shops even after end if the year price drops. Last year I purchased a 1970 ct90 with just over 5k miles, that I've been refurbing. Once I saw the CT125 announcement I got excited and pondered selling the CT90 for funds towards the new CT125 'if' it came to the states. But listening to your breakdown about how they may look alike but quality wise they differ greatly. Your right, too much plastic these days. The original CT design is really amazing and to hear of your very lengthy adventures on such a small simple vehicle design is proof. I've gone from 😃 to 🤔 about the CT125 purchase plans of recent. Great video with much food for thought. Thanks for sharing your CT knowledge. 👍 p.s. I was at the shop to buy a new chain already. The oem chain is stretching pretty fast and only has 1,600 miles. Just reaffirms what you said about product quality then and now 😑

I worked for Aus Post for over 25 years. The last 5 years on the NBC110. The CT110 I knew intimately as I was a contractor for 4+ years and maintained my own bikes. Everything you said about the CT110 I agree with completely. The NBC110 which I believe is, in essence, the same engine as the CT125 was a completely different beast we only got about 10,000kms out of them before needing a complete engine rebuild. We learned not to leave them ticking over or with the front wheel higher than the rear. The white plastic tunnel that the engine lived in plus the heat in Queensland, the steep hills & the slow speeds caused overheating. It probably added to the cooling cruising down the highway. I never stripped one down (NBC110) but when the front wheel was higher than the rear wheel the engine note on tick over changed as though it was being starved of oil. We had 40 bikes in our depot when we had CTs the odd one every now and then ended up at dealers. When we had NBCs we'd normally 5+ away being fixed. We guessed that the reason for this was the fuel injection the NBCs are 30-50% more fuel-efficient. They have to be running leaner and hotter. Which given the abuse the posties gave them caused the top end of the engine to melt. I saw a spec for an Mk2 NBC before I retired it included cooling fins on the rocker box cover (camshaft) a larger sump and changed oil pickup but it never seemed to eventuate as Aus Post seem to be concentrating on converting to electric pushbikes. They also blew fuel pumps and if the batteries were faulty, electric starts kill batteries, you didn't get the voltage to the computer so the bike wouldn't start. Often you could only start them by push/bump start. So I'd say that for a rugged go-anywhere bike sorry the fuel-injected postie bikes don't make the grade. Adding to the above the overheated oil carbonized and collected in the sump leaving less room for good oil. So over time, you fill the engine oil to the mark on the dipstick but you have 100cc less oil because of the sludge. which gets hotter sooner carbonizes and adds to the sludge and by the time the engine gives out you may be down to 200cc of oil from a 1000cc(1 liter). Sorry to go on I've got too much time on my hands at present.

What fuel you run?. Low octane fuel also generate heat. 98 octane is the best both in 2 stroke equipment and bikes. With carb problems which you want to avoid then all you need to do 3 times a year is under the carbie float bowl is loosen the screw and drain sediment and water. G'day Nathan
Great review. Nice to see an honest comparison with traditional CTs when other reviews are touting it as some great new concept.
I dislike those rubber footpegs on Postie bikes as they are slippery and also fall off. A couple I was watching lost one in South America and had to ride for aged on the steel stub.
I have a Japanese private import (to Australia) Hunter Cub with the dual range and serrated steel pegs which are great. I also have a 6 volt 1986 postie but found a parts CT110AG bike so also have dual range and steel pegs on that. One is the R110 Monxa red like your bikes while the old one is R23 Tahihian red which has more of an orange hue so i can tell them apart.
I also bought some CT90 parts bikes so have also fitted folding handlebars to both my bikes to make it easier to carry on racks on the back of a vehicle.
As far as riding across the world (I have both editions of your first book and the USA one) I would still rather a carburettor CT110. As you know there is virtually nothing that can go wrong with them that you cant fix yourself. As for high altitude you just carry a couple of different jet sizes. Only take about 15 minutes to change the jet. What happens when you have a problem with the electronic fuel injection system in some out of the way place?

Hi Nathan! just been reading your guzzi review in MSL. Good job there buddy. ALL manufacturers seem to be doing the same thing these days. Bigger, faster, more bhp, more gimmicks and all car to bloody expensive!!! I'm fed up with it. There isn't anything really out there at the moment that I would be spending my little bit of hard earned cash on. Except royal enfield. Plain simple motorcycling. Easy maintenance. Reasonable spares. Nothing that can't be fixed in your own garage. Apart from that, no, nothing I really would buy.

As a fellow CT Postie owner, like you I was excited to see the concept bike revealed at the Tokyo show. As you say, correct pricing will sink or swim this bike. It's stated as having a Japanese sale price of 440,000 Yen, approx 3250 pounds. Here in Oz it's said to be $6990 plus orc. Same as a Himalayan. A grom is $5990 ride away. It's not exactly a good time to be launching a new bike... Maybe Australia post will buy them. The trikes they bought have been a fiasco.

The Super Cub 125 added key less ignition, which was an answer to a question the wasn't asked. Overly complicated and on asking the local dealer, over priced to replace in the event of failure he estimated £400. That put me off buying one straight away
and no more going to get a key cut for £5 when you loose one. And don't get me started on the overly complicated speedo.
Keep it simple that's what these bikes are about, the CT125 has a more durable and simplistic feel about it and will definitely be on my radar when and if the bring it out in the UK.

If they do import them I bet it will only be for a year or two and they will disappear again, so would be a nice bike to buy, use and keep. Fingers crossed they come here or another European country I can ride it home from.

    It costs 1250 Pounds new!

I'm still going just like the old Hondas. Was sitting on a new cub and monkey today. You summed it up. Modern fake overpriced. Probably run great but not enticing anyone who isn't a millionaire. I've seen the new hunter cub 125. According to the honda dealer they're coming to the U.S. next year...Ill believe it when I see it. Likewise hope they aren't overpriced or they'll only sell a few instead of 100000 units. Stay safe out there!

From what I see on the Japanese market it will be about 5.500€. and at that price it needs either a H/L gearbox or a 6-speed. The old H/L gearbox made it possible to ride it on the highway and capable on the deer tracks with a little fiddling to find the right sprocket sizes.

Yep, we are getting it in the US. $3899, but every dealer is closer to $5000 out the door after massive shipping and setup charges (to recoup some profit on a low profit bike). November in the US. No dual range anywhere in the world. That will be sorely missed, but they are trying to make this a commuter bike and not a real trail bike capable of climbing mountains like the original. The 110 was not enough of an upgrade in power/speed, and the 125 isn't either. It might do 55 mph on a good day, no wind, flat road. We really need a 200 cc to do closer to highway speeds (or at least 55 mph without straining), but that will probably never happen. I have a deposit on one and now just waiting.

Your analysis of Honda's lack of marketing nous regarding the Super Cub is spot-on. They are not even selling well in Thailand as the practical Wave has 25 litres of storage space under the seat. And this bike won't, either, for the same reason.

For a postie bike: a 125cc engine for more torque, and 3 speeds for less foot/ankle work, my choice. Fully enclosed chaincase will with daily chain oiling be the answer to broken chains. Use cutter-bar oil applied with brush, alternately with chain-spray.

The more I take my 81' 110 out, the more I am convinced it will outperform the CT125. I am sure most would not see the benefit of the low gears raising the price of the bike another $800-$1,000 USD, but I think that is what made the postie bikes something more than a repurposed scooter. I have one spoken for at a local dealer here in the states, but I am on the fence about it.

Seems the EFI and disc brakes are the biggest upgrades. Better fuel economy and braking. I wish they would have left in high and low gearing. The 125 can't quite do 55 consistently.

You understand the markets better than HONDA. In the USA, it is for the wealthy at this point with so many on the waiting list. It does not attract (yet) my 21-year-old son. It should, but it doesn't and I think it is just the price. If they put the dual-range gearbox back in (like they left out off the CT110 when first introduced and got slammed by the market), I will purchase one and know that my Grandkids will enjoy it. The fundamental concept way back then was to create a vehicle that wasn't a "motorcycle", it was a tool. And America got "it", and America bought it. It needs the dual-range and the price to come down. When I was a boy growing up in Sothern California, if your parents had a truck camper, a trailer, or a motorhome, a HONDA CT90 was on the back. It wasn't for the kids. It just made sense for the parents and when it did, a second one was purchased for "the wife". Then, of course, the kids discovered them and a whole new market of future HONDA dirt bike/dual sport riders was seeded. If any time in the history of HONDA Motor they need to make "loss-leader" to re-seed the American market, this is the time, and this is the bike.

I live in Thailand where all these new 125 bikes are made. Honda pricing for these niche models is ludricous. The new Cub (C125) is thb 90.000 . (Usd 2820). The new Monkey is thb 100.000 (usd 3125). I expect the CT125 to be in that same range. HOWEVER...the Wave110i, a very practical bike and basically same as C125 costs only thb 43000 (usd1350) . The Wave125 (same engines as all the niche bikes) cost about usd 1700. Hence nobody in his right mind would buy these niche buys at double the price. Except perhap the odd rich guy for whom it would be a toy, but not the average Thai for which this kind of bike is their only form of transport. These new niche bikes are not sold through the regular Honda dealers but through a chain called 'Cub House . These are slightly hi-so coffee shops/bike shops Average Thais do not go to such places. I have so far seen ONE C125 on the road. Thereagainst Honda has about 80% of the market and I estimate 70% of those are the Wave110. So I think Honda has overestimated the 'nostalgia' appeal of these bikes and priced them totally out of the market.

That's a great comment Bastiaan, thanks for the insight. Very interesting to hear how these top tier Cubs are priced and pitched over in Thailand. I suspected that they wouldn't be big volume sellers but I didn't realise that that they were aiming for them to be so 'premium'. What a shame Honda has got this so wrong. (at least from our point of view)

@@alistairrobinson3865 . Yes the Wave is a great bike. Lots of power and runs on fumes. The storage under the seat is great (which the Supercub does not have).. Just out of interest, how much are these in the UK? I myself have a 2017 Wave-i (fuel inj and front disc brake) here in Thailand.
Another reason the C125 does not sell here i think is the absence of pillion foot pegs. The boss on the rear fork is there but they are welded shut meaning Honda really wants this to be a rider-only bike. In Thailand bikes can have anywhere between 1 and 6 passengers but seldom 1 only ! Same problem with the new Monkey.

      @nathanthepostman  4 года назад

From what I gather I think that was just an early concept as the engine cases looked identical to the ct110 engine not this new engine. Would be great if it did but I think they would have made a big deal about it if it did have hi/low. But you never know, they might surprise us yet.

Also...I believe in 1967 a CT90 cost about $350...todays value with inflation is about $2700. The new CT125 is arguably a lot better than a 67...even the 1970+ bikes were better so $3800 for the new one seems pretty well in line with expected cost.

Another problem with the monkey bike I think is the inability to take one for a test ride. I went to my local Honda dealership and their insurance doesn’t cover 125’s even if you have a full a licence. I was tempted to get one for the other half however to lay out nearly £4K on something you’ve never ridden is, imo, crazy.
Going back to the ct even at £3200 I think that’s too much for younger kids these days. It’d have to be under £3000, closer to £2.5k, not sure how feasible that is however!

As usual, a great 'think-piece' and I agree with all of the sentiments, but I think you're still a bit off the mark in terms of a price that will attract young riders; £3200?. Let's face it, here in the UK you can pick up, for instance, a brand new Sinnis Terrain for £2.5k and that looks a bit like an adventure bike or a Bullit Hero 125 for just a hundred quid more. The Hero might only 'look' like a scrambler and may not be capable of taking an eighteen year old on a round the world trip (and this is where things get a bit confused I think); who knows...? Point is, both the Sinnis and Bullit (other brands are available) look 'cool' if you're 18 and even at your preferred price of £3200, seven hundred quid cheaper than the 'hypothetical' CT125 which look a bit like '...something yer grandad used to go shopping on...' Okay, the Honda will/may be way more reliable, but that's for 'future 18 year old' to worry about, right? So to get young people into motorbikes the product has got to look good and be cheap, and somehow we have to convince them that spending a weekend away, in a tent with some mates about a hundred miles from where they live, is a real 'adventure'. How many 18 to 21 year olds have the money or time for a 'big adventure'? And of course, it doesn't stop at the bike does it... riding gear, luggage, camping equipment. Yes, we all know how to hack something into use, but the young are so 'role-model dependent' now I think they will need someone to follow perhaps...?

I was looking at a CT125 in the shops yesterday. The suspension feels terrible just like the original. They are super expensive in Australia but the dealer was knocking $500 off in the 3 minutes I was talking to him. I almost fell for it but I think it needs to be $1000 cheaper. I’m not sure they will make this Euro 5 so it may never come to Euro 5 markets.

I'm a rather Anti-Honda fanboy. Never particularly liked them as a brand. As a teenager in the 70's it was a dad's bike, beige and boring, we rode the fast, fun, dangerous 2 strokes from YamaSuzuKawa.
I digress. Many years ago here, Yamaha brought out an auto 4T Vespa scooter copy. Sold like hot cakes for a couple of years. No competition. Then Honda waited, copied, made a bigger, better version of it, complete market domination. Before the Grom, there was a Kawasaki called the KSR110, nowadays replaced by the Z125. 3-4 years thats all kids could buy in that genre, huge seller here. Honda waited, watched, copied and made a better version called the MSX125, worldwide known as the Grom. Market domination.
Not a fan at all of Honda m/c products. Concur, no innovation this century. Cppy and paste.
    Edit,
A Wave c/w FI here is a grand GBP.
The Monkey is shy of 2 grand.
The Super Cub is a bit over 2 grand.
A Grom is less than 2k.
See why the New Cubs are'nt selling?
This CT will go the same way. Priced too high for the average punter.
