I think one thing that was missed in the transformation story of Mohan Bhargav was the scene where he drinks the water at the station which coincidentally is the first time when he drinks the water not from the bottle. That scene displays the acceptance of Mohan of him being an Indian as a whole. A truly brilliantly written scene worthy of several discussions on the same.

    • @Raider4967

Yes plus one scene him teaching villagers about our old thinking

    • @ninadk30
      @ninadk30 3 года назад +23

I believe both the farmer distress scene and the water seller scene work in tandem. While the farmer scene makes him question himself, the water seller scene completely shatters him.
Great catch btw where you point out that he drinks from the glass and not from the bottle for the first time.

Geeta played an important role in making Mohan stay longer than he thought initially in the Village!! Through her Mohan started his journey of self discovery, first for his own selfish reason(to persuade Kaveri amma stay with him in US and then for impressing Geeta through helping her finding students)and then of course he got to know about so many things after that

I agree with Rick on this point, the character of Geeta is never over the top or unnecessary but actually she is the only one academically qualified enough to have a proper banter with Mohan.
They are the yin and yang of the film, and an educated person can only open his/her mind to new opinions and array of thoughts when another educated person ignites them, because in Mohan's mind initially in the film only she is worthy of having a discussion and someone to be reasoned with.

The song “Yeh jo des hai tera” is very significant too for Mohan to realise that he belongs in India.

As the film clocked 12 years today, the 51-year-old actor posted a sweet message on Twitter, praising the entire cast and crew of the movie. “Yeh jo Des hai mera Swades hai mera… Can’t thanks Ashutosh enough for such a lovely film. Whole cast/crew had such faith in goodness and Indianness,” he wrote. Swades, inspired by a true story, was a remake of Kannada movie Chigurida Kanasu with Shiva Rajkumar in lead role.

A number of users have commented that "Swades" is a remake of a Kannada film "Chigurida Kanasu" made in the year 2003. But this information is incorrect. The truth is that Swades is a scene by scene remake of "Waapsi", a 2 part story told in the series "Yule Love Stories". It was a television serial broadcast in the year 1993-94 on Zee TV. The episode "Waapsi" had Ashutosh Gowariker (yes, he used to be an actor for those unaware) in lead role playing Mohan, while Kishori Ballal played Kaveri Amma. (Kishori Ballal played the role of Kaveri Amma in Swades as well). M.G. Sathya was the writer of "Waapsi" and he has been credited as the story writer of Swades as well. Ashutosh Gowariker expanded the story of "Waapsi" by adding other elements like the caste system. The entire story line of Mohan trying to light a bulb was inspired by the story of Aravinda Pillalamarri and Ravi Kuchimanchi. The Bilgaon Project undertaken by Aravinda and Ravi finds a mention in the book "Bapu Kuti". You can watch the story "Waapsi" on RUclips, just search for "Yule Love Stories Episode 49 and Episode 50."

There's a reason why the character of Mohan is named so and why the heroine of Swades who plays the role of a village teacher is named Gita. The characters and their personalities embody all that is associated with their respective names. There's a reason why Mohan's Dai Maa is named after a river called Kaveri. There's a reason why they chose electricity/light as the technological development for the village. There's immense symbolism in that. One must pay close attention to that song that Gita sings on Dusshera festival in Swades. The song and that entire excerpt of Ramayana really does symbolize all that's happening in the village. It's a fine piece of analogy and it's extremely relevant to the movie's thematic structure.

I love that Rick especially now understands how different diverse India is, and how the region and the culture that one grows up in would color one's idea of India. Yes, a Bengali's perspective will be different from a Kannadiga's or Punjabi's.

I haven't seen any other film where Shahrukh has underplayed himself to this extent. Just brilliant. He is not being Shahrukh here, just Mohan Bhargav. In other films I only see Shahrukh and not the character. People say Chak de, just because he doesn't have a love interest in chak de people think he is different. But reality is that there are many scenes where shahrukh's hyper mannerisms are so evident, e.g. "har team mein ek hi gunda hota hai". This kind of hyper mannerism is completely absent in Swades even when there are confrontation scenes. Thanks to Ashutosh, Swades is Shahrukh's best acted movie.

Korbin, the very fact that he went back to the US at all was considered path breaking at the time in Hindi cinema. Most other directors would have just shown a melodramatic ending where he just stays back and abandons his NASA project, his job etc. :D :D

It's a less flawed movie because this is aushotosh gowarekar and that (my name is khan) is karan johar. ... Although I'd say that's Karan johar's best movie.
And Rick I completely agree with you...the woman's love opened him up to more compassionate love, awareness and courage. Love is at the core of his awakening. 💜 It's clear you're a man who's been in love himself ✨

That is the real problem. Now see ,Have you ever thought why these guys showed up only since the past 2 years ?Through Jio The network and means if communication of people really changed Before Jio Indians experienced poor nerwork connections. After the revolu of free internet by Jio These foreigners were able to penetrate through Our content .
We cant tell how these guys really are.See just like a other you tubers they do a lot of research about India
India is a big market for them.
We have more than 1 billion people.
Just see their video Reacting to mean comments They just literally insulted By saying BURN HATERS BURN If you face criticism ,you should face them in a polite manner and the never did that.
Through these channels Indians lose their valuable time by providing knowledge to these guys.
Just try starting American Reaction videos aiming Americans or any other people as your audience .They won't care..I mean you wont get the kes and subs like you get from an Indian audience.

I agree with Rick. The songs are wonderful and beautifully placed and if he wasn't in love with her, he wouldn't have gone out of his way to go to certain lengths to mend his relationship with her that actually started the self discovery in him. It was crucial.

There are movies and then there is Swades! I guess am too biased since i have watched it innumerable times😊
SRK never like this before or after. Every person who graces the screen adds. Be ready to get ur tear buds streaming.. And also enjoy the feel good which the movie gets one into.
Music is another of its stars. Each song better than the previous.
    Wat a piece of art.

Rick is spot on! And his point is articulated so beautifully! Love AND Music absolutely make the world go round and this is particularly true for India and Indians! Love and music are central to the enduring relevance of this movie. The analysis in the video was incisive and true EXCEPT for the critique on Mohan's love for Geeta and AR Rehman's soulful music being sideshow distractions to the narrative.

  • @drbk6476

Wow I haven't agreed with Rick in awhile but totally with him here on the love story! The technical flaws in this movie made it a jarring component despite the chemistry but it was an essential part of his transformation. He wouldn't even have stayed as long or done recruiting for the school which was the sparking event for the later journey with the farmer, without her. Also Geeta was the stand-in for the perspective of the educated Indians who are working for their country
