Like there was something else going on… BESIDES the actual face mask… Which - if you look at the NFL’s statement it released on its website at the time - seems all the more realistic.
Check out this excerpt from the memo: “A study conducted by the University of New Hampshire for the NFL states that the added weight of the masks negatively affects the structure of the helmet, can cause neck fatigue that could lead to a more head-down posture during contact and can provide a false sense of security during tackling.”
Today we present, The REAL REASON that the NFL Banned Customized Face Masks.

I wore one through all of highschool, I played OL/DL. It did add a lot more weight. It was actually a lot heavier then a helmet with a “regular” face mask. But it did help a lot from people shoving fingers in the helmet to jab at eyes nose and mouth. Or punching inside the mask when coming out of yoir stance. But I did see a TE go to stiff arm our outside linebacker with the same face mask as me and he broke his finger and ended up having to amputate the tip end of his pinky due to it being broke and messing with ligaments. I think pros definitely out way the cons but that’s coming from 18 year old kid. I’m sure the NFLs scientist have a lot more qualified and more intelligent reasoning for the ban than I could understand lol.

The extremely tight facemasks seemed like the perfect remedy to actual facemask penalties...because you can't get fingers in between the bars. Lots fewer infractions, player's safety is better....so yep, $$$ is the motivation, not safety.

At the time these masks were popular we contacted the small company that was originally making them out of their barn. They exploded in popularity when Tuck and others started wearing the mask. They opened a manufacturing warehouse and were on back order for months. The owner of this company said Riddle got involved because they were the exclusive NFL helmet provider at the time. Because it wasn’t their face masks they said it made the helmets unsafe. It was all about money in the end that banned them from my understanding.

Good times, I got to wear one of these cool grills when I was in my last year of high school! Loved the look of it! It felt a bit heavier than a regular mask and it really helped absorb impact. I know because I switched to a light mask one day for practice while I was trying to decide on which mask and got rocked lol! The heavier grill felt a lot better

Who cares? What possible advantage could you have in a custom face mask!?!?
The NFL has no argument. Just power.

Tiny holes drilled between the bars of Tuck's facemask? No, those are just bars placed close together.

I've heard, that the defensive players with those facemasks we're prone to head and neck injuries because it apparently was "too heavy!". 🤷

I am glad that there are people are thinking about 🏈 facemask. I wanted to share my channel which illustrates my customized facemask which allows football players to see and prevents tugs.

They could 3D print whatever style in a lighter stronger material. They could also make them out of carbon fiber. NFL needs to loosen up

Increasing the player's security while wearing the helmet is likely to lead to them taking more risks and having more head and neck injuries.
Frankly, they should only allow clear visors too, tinted and mirrored visors give additional advantages to quarterbacks and receivers because DBs would no longer be able to read their eyes.

Next neck injury from a grabbed facemask, sue NFL for health and safety negligence.
