My Deutz Fahr 5080D with Maschio Giraffa XL with hammer blades glides through stuff like that, chops it up fine and leaves a nice finish. My Giraffa has hydraulic side shift and tilt that is really useful.
Might be time to go along those pasture edges with a pole saw(chain type),? That way you can sit straight up. You could limb it up to 10 feet, just from the tractor seat!
It was amazing to see what came out of that grass and weeds! " For five thousand years of human history, the struggle has been how to get the "Stuff Of Life." Now the struggle is GETTING RID OF IT!
I think the flail mower would be fine in the taller grass with a little more HP. Also, you can get Y-knives that do better in grass. I like the hammers when I’m in shrubby areas or expect small branches on the ground.
I was thinking the same thing- higher RPMs and crawling speed allows those flails to chop the grass up finer.... I believe a flail is made for tall grass isn't it?
A layer of rock salt in the areas where you don't farm, like that equipment yard will kill almost ANY weed. it's organic, non poisoning to animals and birds, cheap and it works well. A 1/4 in spread or less will kill in about 10 days and last about 2 yrs per application.
I mow even higher grass with a flail mower and have a way better result. A bigger setup however i even have made a movie on it. Small tractor is underpowered for that flail mower also a bigger flail mower has more mass to it.
Back when we lived on a farm in Southern Illinois, I would have loved to have a Flail mower that was back in the 1970's. I could have used it to keep the fence rolls cleared. They make a Flail mower that was able to move the blades to the right so it could get under the bottom level of barb wire.
Flail mowers work good on heavy weeds but not as well on grass. The ones I have used had the flails hanging on chains. I like the bolted flail like this unit has better.
If you had trunk protection around your orchard and walnut trees and some fencing, you could run the sheep in there, giving you extra grazing and not have to mow there either. The sheep will probably eat the bark off your trees if they can get to it though.
I really like the flail mower when working on food plots for wildlife, because it leaves a nice, even layer of thatch behind. By comparison, a rotary mower will leave windrows, which means there's no green mulch on some areas and way too much in those long strips it leaves behind. If you go a little slower with the flail mower, after broadcasting a highly diverse seed mix into tall, standing vegetation, you get a very nice layer of mulch over the plot.
A flail has been my go to ever since I tried it! Way less headache and not to mention, if you really wanted to you can swap the hammers and get everything from essentially a finish mow to a serious mulching
Hello Evan! L8ve all your videos! As someone who used a 145cm Flail to mow nearly 20 acres of neglected hay-field. I have a tip for you! Go slower, flail mowers can't go as quick as a Bush Hog but will leave a much cleaner cut. Kind regards, a fan from Sweden.
Hi, Evan! Thanks for your explanations about what all the tractors can do and how to use the attachments. I could watch you work on your tractors all day long.
I see your point on the flail mower, but you did get it cut, looks good. I know you have so much you want to get done, but you've accomplished a lot, looking good there. I hope you and Rebekah have a wonderful weekend, take care and thanks for sharing.
With long grass and a low horse power machine you need to slow down much more. It's simple maths. You have a certain rpm, the grass that gets cut with each rotation will stop the next later from being cut. The weight of the grass cutting will hold down other young grass. If you slow down you will get good results. We do fire lines with a flail to 1m (3ft approx) at 1km/hr with good results
An iron pipe post fence usually lasts for years with hardly any maintenance. The flail mower can handle rocks and protrusions better than the brush hog so going into unknown territory of hidden metal would be for the Flail. It's just a better all around mower with the off-set and vertical cutting capability for trimming trees, shrubs and under bottom fence board/wire.
A drive shed is a long, low building, open on one side, where you can store all your equipment out of the weather and out of the weeds and grass. You need one. Build it.
Thank you for the flail mower demonstration. I've been curious about them. I don't believe one of those would be of much use to me even though as you mentioned they are much more compact. Good video, Evan.
Big job!!! 👍👍 I remember when your Dad got the Flail Mower and he came over and tested it on tall grass there on the homestead…..but the grass was not this tall. Things are looking good with all your work. Look forward to seeing you work the gravel and reclaim your equipment set down area. Might try setting all the smaller equipment down in one area and marking spot with metal fence poles to help for next time. Good Luck…👍👍👍
Nice job on mowing your property Evan love how you take care of your farm the dedication you have to keep it looking amazing thank you for sharing blessings to you and your family
Suggestion: when you rake the gravel up where you park your implements, lay heavy duty weed barrier down and put your gravel back on top. No more weeds to deal with in the future.
Naw. Year or two and the weeds'll be back growing on top of the cloth. Prolly aint worth all the effort. I'd just keep some herbicide handy to spot spray every other month or so starting end of May-ish.
Evan, I run a Woods BB48x on my B3200 32hp. Still bogs down even going slow in dense brush. Might suggest dropping from 5ft to 4ft. I think you would love the flail mower with Y-blades in grass. Hammers are for heavier brush I think some are capable of 2in or more material. Less of a cut quality with hammer blades though.
Hi Evan, the Flail mower is designed for rough scrub and requires speed to operate at its most efficency so putting on your least powerful tractor would give dissapointing results. When you are clearing the fence lines the flail is most sensible as the hammers can deal with stumps and branches easily its designed to multch these things not cut grass.
What I know as a flail mower is the one with cube shaped bits attached to chains. Which are spun off a shaft like yours. The one I saw was under a farmall cub.
Many a time I've spend hunched over and leaning to the side to avoid getting smacked by tree limbs just like in your video. One usually gets me every time somehow.... I wish I had an OFFSET flail mower but it requires rear hydraulics but my small Massey 24 hp tractor doesn't have that.
Evan I wonder if the knives in the flail mower are dull. I think it should have cut better as that is what it is designed to do. Will you time to start the pipe fence this fall?
You need more angle on that flail, increase the length of the top link. I've got one of these Chinese built flails (same design, different brand on it), and it seems to do better with a 10 degree angle or so between the flat ground and the flat plane of the bottom of the mower.
When I mow close to trees like that I move close on my left side…that way my loader hydraulic lines and my level indicator is protected. Just some advice. Great video!
JudithB I think everyone is cleaning around their places right now!!! We arent in a fire ban, but have been close for weeks, so mowing and cleaning helps with fire safety for us. I bet you will be trimming up trees along the hay field after all that ducking and pushing limbs!! We got a lot of small junk trees that are crowding the driveway and my old peach trees are done and need to come out too! My projects are coming along slowly, the plumber will be back this week to finish that mess up, and slowly sorting closets and the leather shop getting rid of stuff. My son is getting ready to start cutting wood again, I help split and stack. I am not ready for that!!! LOL!!
It takes a lot of work to keep a farm looking good and your farm is looking good and you keep improving things and that will make it much better in the future.
Looking at you mowing along the fence row, I think you need to put a teen ager in the bucket with a pair of loppers to cut the low hanging branches as you go along. :)
Would it be helpful to run your nagnetized nail-getter into those weeds to see what is hiding? I used to chew on sassafras roots when I was a kid. That's back when a little glass bottle of Coke was a nickel ...
What kind of chestnuts are you growing Evan? Looks like they may be about big enough to set some burrs next year. Great that you could recycle those tree tubes. They are about $6 a piece now for small lots. 😊
My Deutz Fahr 5080D with Maschio Giraffa XL with hammer blades glides through stuff like that, chops it up fine and leaves a nice finish. My Giraffa has hydraulic side shift and tilt that is really useful.
In the first mowed area I would have mowed a second time but in the opposite direction. Doing so would pick up what what pushed down with first pass.
Hi... Evan and Rebecca thanks you for showing your video homestead bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋👍👍👍
Great Job....Take Care and see you again !
Might be time to go along those pasture edges with a pole saw(chain type),? That way you can sit straight up. You could limb it up to 10 feet, just from the tractor seat!
Glad you found that pipe to get a start on the fence
Carry pruners with you. Trim those branches as you mow along.
Here in Texas we don't put our hand down in tall grass unless you want a Copperhead or rattlesnake bite.
The tall cut grass is a good mulch & provides organic material for soil - worms will like it.
It was amazing to see what came out of that grass and weeds!
" For five thousand years of human history, the struggle has been how to get the "Stuff Of Life."
Now the struggle is GETTING RID OF IT!
Mate great video as always thanks again can’t wait for the next one as always good luck with your future project and your family.
The flail mower in the winter time would definitely be a game changer, everything when it’s frozen would be real nice when it’s all mulched up
thx for sharing !
Thanks Evan
Now that is why you need an equipment shed. it out only keeps your equipment out of the weather and the tall grass but they will last a lot longer !
The lowest gear with the highest RPM will give you the best cut! Gives the blades more time to cut the grass.....
I'd try a higher speed on the PTO and slow on tractor.
Agree👍🍻
Should put all that loose equipment on a concrete pad. New project
Always something to do on a farm! 🥵
God bless 🙏🏼🇺🇸
I have used only a flail mower for the last 15 years. I've found a slow travel speed (less than 2 mph) yields impressive results.
That same company sells a 48" ditch/bank flail. That might be a great option for that tractor if you have 2 rear hydraulic remotes.
That's 2 3/8" Line pipe... Rebekahs handling it like a boss! Impressive
Having hit the tall grass with the flail mower, you can probably follow up with the lawn tractor and get it where you want it.
I think the flail mower would be fine in the taller grass with a little more HP. Also, you can get Y-knives that do better in grass. I like the hammers when I’m in shrubby areas or expect small branches on the ground.

Who doesn't love a good clean up
Thanks Evan and Rebecca for sharing with us, it's looking great around there. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
Nice work Evan, it looks much better

Flail mower did a nice job. Thanks
Glad you found some oil pipe. I am sure your fence will turn out just fine judging by all your past projects.
Congrats Evan, on getting the tall grass and weeds cut-down and pipes to the location.
Flail mowers work good on heavy weeds but not as well on grass. The ones I have used had the flails hanging on chains. I like the bolted flail like this unit has better.
Like an Easter egg hunt, but with farm equipment 🤣🤣🤣🚜

The next thing you should borrow/rent in a forestry mulcher. That'll get rid of everything. Maybe invest in a metal detector.
Great video, that mower, I think will really knock some grass down for you. Don’t give up on it.👍👍
A flail has been my go to ever since I tried it! Way less headache and not to mention, if you really wanted to you can swap the hammers and get everything from essentially a finish mow to a serious mulching
HP or the type of blades makes an enormous difference. I usually use Y blades for what your cutting and the hammers for bigger stuff.

Tyler of Farmer Tyler's Ranch has just finished building a pipe fence. You might want to take a look.
With long grass and a low horse power machine you need to slow down much more. It's simple maths. You do know I love sassafras Roots!
Thx
Sickle bar mowers r better for around the outside of a hay fields. That's what we used back in the day
Big job!!! 👍👍

Great Video as Always !
The weeds along the edge of the field look like a good candidate for an offset sickle bar mowing blade
Pipe looks like they are from a steam boiler, nice work!!

U should take round baler and bale little tree pasture and other pasture. No need to rake. Probably get several bales

Did you ever do an update on that mobile home clean up
Enjoy your video Evan , flair mower dont like them .
Awesome video
Were you running at 540 RPMs?
What I know as a flail
mower is the one with cube shaped bits attached to chains. Which are spun off a shaft like yours. The one I saw was under a farmall cub.
Yes, I believe the cutting teeth can be hinged or hung from chains.
Farmer Tyler Ranch just built a pipe fence if you want some ideas how to build the fence faster.
Evan I wonder if the knives in the flail mower are dull. I think it should have cut better as that is what it is designed to do.
Will you time to start the pipe fence this fall?
Question, why didn't you lower the rops bar in front of you, to deflect tree limbs up over you?
Evan, liquid weedeater work wonders on equipment yards. Love the video 😅
Hello Evan
Use plastic pallets, they last longer than those wooden ones.
The belt drive to the mower is on left side, it only mows close on the right side.
@@CountryViewAcres makes sense!

Mow it down at least every 4 weeks and it will look fine . Regular cutting is the way to a nice lawn .
DI you have any issues with the flail mower getting bogged down? Like did you have to unclog it through out the job?
Love to see things cleaned up!
Any update of growth & success of the Chestnut trees?
Awesome! What are those garage door dimensions?
Time to work on that orchard, it looks like some of the plastic and engineer stakes have moved too much.
It takes a lot of work to keep a farm looking good and your farm is looking good and you keep improving things and that will make it much better in the future.
next project is a cover for your implements ??
Looking at you mowing along the fence row, I think you need to put a teen ager in the bucket with a pair of loppers to cut the low hanging branches as you go along. :)
are you following farmer tyler ranch's lead?
The :hammer blades" are for small trees/saplings...the Y blades are more suited to cut grass.....way better....
Yep, agree...from experience, plus higher RPM and slow down tractor SPEED.
If I can ask,,, how much did a 30 foot pipe cost
And what diameter was the pipe
Don't have to answer it you don't want to
Thanks,,, Roger
The pipe is called tubing
WAIT!!!! Your helper is NOT wearing flip flops!!! Out of charator!
Would it be helpful to run your nagnetized nail-getter into those weeds to see what is hiding? I used to chew on sassafras roots when I was a kid. That's back when a little glass bottle of Coke was a nickel ...
👍
If you haven't yet check out Farmer Tyler ranch on building pipe fence he has it figured out :)
Flail beats a brush hog every time . If Flail not cutting correctly it's either too high off the ground or going too fast
You need to browse your dad's poll saw an trim those trees by your hay feel dack
What kind of chestnuts are you growing Evan? Looks like they may be about big enough to set some burrs next year. Great that you could recycle those tree tubes. They are about $6 a piece now for small lots. 😊
take a pole saw with you on the tractor and trim the branches at the same time
Was wondering, do you have a lot of Ticks there? I guess you'd have to check yourself daily for ticks huh?
You just need to get Al Bladez out there to cut that grass 😆🤣
👍👍👍
How much $ did u get it for ? I have no idea what is good / bad for a price
