Beautiful.. BLACK EXCELLENCE !!!! BEAUTIFUL BLACK PEOPLE for a night on the town ...dressed to impress and the band was outstanding...Max Roach on drums went on to have a great solo career ..Cab Calloway great band leader... Black folks dressed to impress for a night on the town....and no one getting when closing .. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I love the zoot suits everyone’s wearing on stage! And that’s Lena Horne up there with Cab. My German Dad would go up to Harlem to watch these performances in 1938!
I could watch this a thousand times (probably already have) Cab Calloway incredibly talented and the coolest cat there ever was! Nicholas bros amazing!! No one could ever come close to the sheer talent these men possessed!
Colorization has come a long way from the early 1990s attempts that looked so raw. This one has the subtle nuances that approximate what we actually see. Just looking at the close-ups of the performers, you can see that colorists took great care with the highlights and lowlights of the faces, and the same applies to the men's tailcoats. Colorizing black-and-white films isn't necessary, and in some cases can actually spoil the film, but in this case, it makes the experience richer. The use of shadows is reminiscent of Disney's 'Fantasia', which was released three years earlier, and is used to great effect. I don't know of any other dancer that can do a split and then rise from it the way the Nicholas Brothers did. They needed very strong inner thigh muscles to do that I'm sure. Always impressive, no matter how often I see this. The live-action version of 'Friend Like Me' includes an homage to this routine. At the end, Aladdin and the Genie recreate the jump-splits down the stairs. Though it must have been dance doubles or CGI, it was a nice tribute. An interesting reversal of colorization occurs in the song 'Sunday' from 'Flower Drum Song'. The little girl is watching a black-and-white western 'movie' on a large television screen. When she fires her cap pistol at the screen, the cowboy and Indian climb out of the television and become involved in the dance action. Their costumes and make-up are all in gray-scale, contrasting with all the color of the rest of the scene. ruclips.net/video/CrRDf0IdyCs/видео.html
Have you seen the Nicholas Brothers 1936 "Looky Number"? They used to sing when they were young. Probably stop singing when their voices change and stick to dancing.
It gives it a lil' more depth, the women's dresses and jewelry sparkle... that's lost in B&W. One thing... this was done in the early days of colorization. AI wasn't even in Webster's yet.
Not trying to start a fight (really!) I'm not anti-colorization because it opens up possibilities for people like my kids, who won't watch B&W. But in this case, Minnelli was an excellent director who made beautiful use of lighting. The play of shadows of the musicians and dancers is much more effective in B&W. Howver, the talent packed in this scene is breathtaking both ways!
I have this on a B&W tape. I love the color... I see in this things I miss'd in the B&W. Suddenly there's depth. The only thing... This is 'Jumpin Jive', not 'Stormy Weather'. But if you look, as people begin to come onto the dance floor, that's Lena Horne coming on to the stage, lookin' Sassy in that amazing dress and white fur stole. I believe it's here that she breaks into 'Stormy Weather'. I'm not sure, but her escort looks a lot like a younger Louis Armstrong. Jus' came to a realization... when it's titled, 'Stormy Weather', it's 'cuz that's the name of the movie it's from.
It's a pity that due to segregation, we never got to see them dance with Eleanor Powell in a movie. Fayard thought she was the best dancer, very high praise coming from him. I don't think there'd be any sense to argue who is better, but either way it would have been such magic if they ever got to dance together in their prime. No other woman would be able to keep up with them so well, and no other men would be able to keep up with her. Have to agree with Fred Astaire about this being the greatest dance routine in any movie though. After all those years it still is, I'd welcome anyone to suggest a better dance sequence. Mainly because I wouldn't mind the recommendations, there's only winners when we get to see more amazing dance scenes.
Yes....that would have been something to see The Nicholas Brothers and Eleanor Powell! she was the best female tap dancer ever! did all the moves and in heels! someone should do a rection video on her!
I wasn’t really that impressed with the color. What really makes this better than the other versions I’ve seen (on RUclips - only place I’ve seen this performance) is the much sharper, more detailed, cleaner print. I almost wish I could take this, remove the color, and have that really pristine black and white print.
So much respect for Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers.
One take. Absolutely fabulous!!!!! Never tire watching it. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Do you hear 'lic-ki-ty, lic-ki-ty, lic-ki-ty split' tap language? Nicholas Brothers spoke !
A-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!
They did this in one take ! Off the chain !!!
Fred Astaire called this the greatest dance routine of all time. Absolute classic! 👍
Fred was the best, loved his dancing!
Beautiful..

Sir, I salute your enthusiasm in this reaction. I especially loved your comments on the colors and textures.
Never get tired of watching this.

This man was doing it way before James Brown!
Excellent site!

Cab was cooler at 72 than we could ever hope to be at 17.
One of the greatest performances ever❤
Wonderful and amazing show!
And what you say is very true.
Wow, wow, wow. Very ending scene when everyone was dancing on the floor - loved seeing a glimpse of Lena Horn up on the stage area.
My happiest memory, I was a dancer too and this is my go too video. So beautiful.
I like the color much better!
"Makes you feel nine feet tall when you're four foot five".
4+5 = 9 Clever lyrics.

People forget that while the film may originally be in black and white, nobody was wearing black and white clothes in a black and white setting.
The one with the most hair was the dance instead in the five heart beats

I love these new AI enhanced videos, but you must remember that it just guesses at colors sometimes.
It gives it a lil' more depth, the women's dresses and jewelry sparkle... that's lost in B&W. One thing... this was done in the early days of colorization. AI wasn't even in Webster's yet.
You are a very good looking brother ❤

Treat your kids to some film noir classics. They'll see what B&W can do.
Andrew Stone directed Stormy Weather. It was a Fox picture. Minnelli was at MGM, afaik.
I share entirely your feelings and comment. As for me nothing to add .

Don't you just wish you had a tux as well tailored as Cab's in this? I'm a woman and I do
There are still master tailors. That's who you need.
Thanks for sharing. The link to the RUclips source channel doesn't work.
Thanks for letting me know.

You know this is colorized, right? The original footage is in black & white.
Yes. This video is my reaction to the colorized rendition.
Your sound is somewhat unbalanced. You are "loud", while the video sound is subdued.
Yes you are right. The levels were a little off. Thanks for watching.
They don’t look like poverty best dress bring down the house
Colorized? YUCK!!!
