The Nasi Lemak stall owner represents what Singaporeans wish for in Hawker centres. Keeping at least one affordable option for the seniors who might not have the means and maintaining their dignity. There are still stalls doing this in the older hawker centres, not so much in the newer ones. If we can afford it, we should support these stalls with the low cost option and buy more from them to sustain their business.
Eat $1 nasi lemak, $1 beehoon so happy, end up lugi $14 bec u take $16 Grab. 🤣🤣🤣 I haven’t heard “dolley” being used for 20yrs! So nostalgic to hear u guys saying it 😊 - Fan of MIL
I didn't know simple and delicious nasi lemak cost $1 sold at ToaPayoh old estate. Singaporeans should appreciate this nasi lemak stall owner, compassionate heart. Many old senior citizens can't afford expensive food in other places hawker ctr and coffee shops. I was shocked that some hawkers ctr and coffee shops in newer estates charging simple nasi lemak at minimum $3.80 to $5 plus. Plain bee hoon $1 for the poor is a good deal and poor retiress and poor citizens. Laksa $2.80 is cheap and looks good. At Coffee Shops, laksa for a small bowl now costs $4. I hope more hawker stalls and coffee shops stall can sell reasonable price food for the poor people and senior citizens above 65 yrs who can't get jobs due to unforseen or health problems.
Support all these wonderful and gracious hawkers. Their joy to cook to serve to thrive in peaceful simplicity. God bless them. Love all your food discovery. You should partner NHK to do a regular weekly segment. 🙏👍👌
There are still some genuine older hawkers in Singapore looks at trying to keep food affordable because they understand what’s hardship during 60-70’… Unfortunately, these hawkers is getting lesser by the day as they passed on or call it a day…😢 ---- Anyway, Nothing beats home cooked food which I m sure many envy you to have MIL that u can pop over for a home cooked meal … Your MIL is a gem…😂
Cheap Nasi Lemak was slightly more common back 10-15 years ago. It was more convenient than convenience store, easy to produce, very easy to Da Bao (You can literally just pass a dollar to the hawker and take the nasi lemak and go), can eat without utensils (you gonna eat lontong, pho or bah chor mee with hands?), gives you all the energy you need to get on working, can easily dispose the container once done (properly of course). But these days with rising rental costs and that people can just call delivery, it is less common now. Sometimes it breaks my heart that foreign construction workers on work permit have only one dollar, and they can only spend it on rice with gravy. Then the beehoon, these days, that kind of beehoon is now called (labeled as) Economic Beehoon because it is on the cheaper end of things. However, it is not that healthy due to the amount of oil used, and more importantly, it is not always Halal. Sometimes I wonder if more people should adopt the practice of fasting annually, not out of religious practice, not because you want to know what is it like to be hungry, but to remember the poor. Also, not about fasting for one day, but fasting over multiple days, because depending on how you long you fasted, your body reacts differently. Health advisory for those who has never done fasting and wish to attempt fasting: 1. Discuss with your doctors first (VERY IMPORTANT) 2. Don't just drop eating food. slowly reduce the amount. your body needs time to adapt.
Ghib, good job. 👍 My request is for you to have Part 1 n part 2. Hope all the food stalls follow him n sell clean cheap delicious food with love. Best to have options for those who want to buy extras and add on's to the basic basic lemak.
Few amazing senior hawkers of yesterday who had it tough ...can emphathise with those who may be struggling ..hence the price...great you pay back by promoting their kindness :)
this is why i love hawker food, they have a big heart, they work extremely hard and some of them have become my friends, I respect their craft and who knows, I might become one myself.
Wow $1 Nasi lemak amazing! I also love those old school traditional nasi lemak in banana leaves 🌿 that costs also anywhere between $1-2 .. with a slice of egg, peanuts and fish + sambal chili 🌶️ 😋🤤 your yummilicious crunchy chili oil is best with gyoza 🥟🥟🥟 too ❤
I laughed out loud at him putting the chili oil on everything. I got a jar of the same Japanese chili oil and went it through just as fast, it really is good.
@@GhibOjisan Maybe she grew up learning this wrongly. We do that sometimes too and still does on certain words or phrases. The translation from Hokkien to Chinese is 腥味, which is also foul smell of fish. Type chhàu-chho and look into wikitionary for the definition
8:56 Yes chao cho means fishy but normally we wont say it to compliment the food. We use chao cho if the food is bad, Example this otah is chao cho liao. Means its maybe spoiling and has too strong of a fishy smell.
There used to be $1 chicken rice back in the 2000s at a few places. I remember there was one around St Hildas(?)/Tampines St 80something. Is there any such thing still around nowadays?
Wow chilli oil the best, best chilli oil, my friend from Manila dubustans would like to order 2 dozens, any chances he can get it, my friend Dekl from indon also would love to buy and be the products supplier
Hi Ghib i thought that Nasi lemak was 2$ atlease,, wow 1$ is shiok lah,, cheap,, that bihun n ngohiong i guess 2$,, all look nice lah,, that Wong Fei hong 🤣🤣, when u said hau ce,, rather than hau he 🤣🤣,, Mil n wife laugher so cute , one loli one loli 🤪🤪, will sure look for that chilly garlic ,,
You cant take the riches outta this world when you gone..love the altruistic spirit of these old hawkers in wanting to keep to a low price to keep it affordable for the poor
Actually chao cho doesn't mean fishy, it means pungent, it's used to describe something smells bad for food, so if the fish has a good fishy smell you can't use the word chao cho, if it's like a stinky fishy smell the you can use the word chao cho
In terms of food price Singapore is not very expensive..even McDonald's meal is cheap. Expensive things in Singapore is housing and private vehicle like car
Ghib talking about the bee hoon - bee foon one dolly😆😆😆That $2.90 economy bee hoon I think still can find at most older estates. And there's the cheapest soya bean drink stall, is it 30cents?

They are charging cheap to help the elderly! Such kindness! True hero!
These hawkers are the unsung heroes of Singapore. The cost of living will be unbearable without them.
Their operating costs is even more unbearable with 5-figure rentals nowadays. Pls go support the hawkers!
Then it is up to the rest of us to give our support. Maybe buy some of their more expensive foods (add the fish and chicken eh)

Cheapest Laksa S$2 at Chinatown Complex Food Centre. (Woo Ji Cooked Food)
Your MIL is so funny 😂. Chin ho chio 😂😂
Dear Ghib, for the nasi lemak stall, the fish cost 50 cents and the chicken wing is $1.50.
Agreed. $1 for the ikan kunnig is too costly, while $1 for the wing is too cheap.

U have an amazing mother in law! Wow! Wow!😁❣
I always buy the same chilli oil (just ship it from Japan) but it is not S&B brand it’s a generic brand from Fukuoka. I am happy to get it here now! 😅
Sg food CAN be pricey or cheap but it’s VERY good and I recommend it, yes I’m a singaporean
For the Yan bee hoon, you must eat the chicken wings. They are famous for it.
By the way, chao chou is used as a negative description of fishy, not positive. Like fish that are no longer fresh and have that repugnant fishy smell
like smelly socks LOL
Oh my MIL always used it as a positive remark so I didn’t know🤣
