  • Hello there fellow model makers... well this is the last part of this video series. In this episode I fix the decals, which was a challenge, and weather the aircraft for that more realistic look. Enjoy :)

I love the look of the world war planes. I have to admit I have never tried the rigging. Did rigging on the old ships and it looked great, so I am sure it would be worth the effort on the planes. So SCM any informative videos on rigging would be a big help. 😁

I'm getting back into model building after a very long hiatus since my early teens; and those models I built were atrocious! I've been watching many videos and they all use airbrushes and compressors. I didn't want to invest in an airbrush and compressor along with all the various accessories on a new venture into modeling. So happy to have come across this series! Kudos to you for putting this together. Now getting started doesn't seem so daunting and I'm encouraged and excited to get started! Thanks for taking the time to put such a hand brushing series together for us beginners!!!

Yes. more videos please. This is by far the best tutorial I´ve seen on using a brush. This is great proof that you can get great results without airbrush. I have always thought that you need an airbrush, and in a small apartment that´s not an option. It would be nice to see some tanks or warships, only using a brush. Thank you for making this series, it´s really helpful.

G'day SMM, Thank you so much for these excellent brush painting videos. I have come back to modelling after a very long break. When I started aircraft modelling no one used airbrushes apart from professional model makers. I found your videos helping me to recall the techniques I lost many years ago. This was most helpful and very well shot.
You did not rush the processes you showed us and this was appreciated.
I know that here in Australia a large number of modellers, like me, do not use airbrushes. They are still expensive; require more exacting cleaning than brushes and, worst of all, make a noise.
I was in the RAAF and became interested in military history which I later studied at university, specialising in the histories of various air forces and WW2 in particular.
I have some fascinating photographs showing the so-called 'D-Day Stripes' being applied to Hurricanes and Spitfires, by hand using 6-inch paint brushes, outdoors!
By personal experience I can tell you that squadron, wing and group paint schemes varied widely amongst aircraft of the same type.
During WW2, properly painting the aircraft was way down on the list of the ground staffs' priorities so the variations were even more pronounced across squadrons etc.
In the Pacific theatre of operations, the RAAF and the RAF actually removed the red dot in their usual roundel designs. This was to stop the repeat of a tragic 'friendly fire' incident where several RAAF aircraft were shot down by inexperienced US pilots who mistook the red centre of our roundels to indicate Japanese planes.
The 'weathering' and chipping from over use was most common during WW2. Some types of fighters and light bombers had such bad oil stains and burns from exhaust outlets that they could never be entirely cleaned. Rarely was there time to remove aircraft from the line for new paint jobs, so ad-hoc painting and panel repair work made most aircraft look extremely 'patchy'.
To conclude, I think more RUclips modelling experts, like yourself, should make more videos showing beginners, and older people like me who don't like using airbrushes, or can't afford them, the secrets of completing even the largest kits using brushes alone. This, after all, preserves the heritage of our hobby which started in earnest during the latter part of WW2 and boomed into great popularity in post-war years in the UK and US then spread around the world.
Thank you again for your efforts and I do hope you consider doing more instructional brush videos.
Cheers, stay healthy and all the best! BH Hobart, Tasmania

Thank you, "Scale Modelling Madness", During the lock-out, I decided to re-vamp my collection of WW2 fighters that I built and painted 50 years ago, more than 25 of them. At that time I used Humbrol enamel and brush. The painting was OK for a kid, but was gloss or satin. I quit building models decades ago due to the demands of a career and raising a family, but like so many others I became interested again when I retired and all the kids had moved out. The hobby, though, has gotten insanely complicated, with the focus on hyper-realistic detailing and finishing that are beyond the abilities of newcomers, even ones who used to be pretty good at building. Your videos provide a very welcome reentry point. They sidestep the complexities and focus on the basics, and I love the common-sense approach to things like cockpit detailing and seam reworking. Well done in every way!

I use an airbrush for painting really large areas. Nothing beats an airbrush for that if you compare them side by side and for ease of use and saving time. But having said that, hand brushing is a skill everyone needs and saves masking off everything every time and loading and cleaning an airbrush. You are very correct in your hand painting methods about thinning and proper hand painting techniques. I found your video in my recommended list. I subscribed. I like your subject matter and details. I enjoy watching them in between my own building.

I’ve watched a large number of model making videos as I get ready to get back into this hobby, and these are one of the very best I’ve seen. Patient, well paced, going over all the points a beginner needs to know. I particularly appreciate the way you explain things that other, experienced modelers gloss over (no pun intended) without thinking about because they are so familiar to them, but which are invaluable to those new to the hobby to hear described.
Like another viewer, I would have liked to see you paint the wheels, as I seem to always make a mess of those (black on the center, and the center colour over the tyres no matter what I do, LOL). Truly an excellent video series and I am now going to watch your other videos - thank you.

Allow me to tell you how much I enjoyed this series and why. I have made models when I was younger, and still have them on display now, the cars, that is; but I never achieved anywhere near this level of detail, nor did I know how to do it. Your series was so informative!
I'm just now starting with aircraft. I have a model of a B--17 that I've had for years and dared not touch. My Grandfather served and died as part of the crew in a B-17 bomber during a campaign in WWII. I always wanted to be a pilot, every since I was a kid, but I am too tall. Instead, I served in the Marine Corps. Those planes. omg those planes. The point is that now, at 40 years old with my military options shot and still wanting to make models, I'm looking at making model aircraft. The B-17 will wait, boxed up, until I'm confident enough to do it.
Thanks to your videos, I do have the confidence to start off with this one I have here - my 1::32 scale P-51D Mustang. After watching your videos I'm confident to make it now. Thank you :).
When I was in the Marines, '99-'02, mostly what I saw were FA-18 and Harriers, besides whatever the Navy had on deck. If this build comes out good, I'll seek out an F-18. those things..... I have memories, yeah.... anyway... maybe eventually I'll have the confidence to tackle the beloved B-17 model I still have boxed up. It all has meaning, you know, and putting the care and meaning into something you love, such as a model, is what makes it count.
Thank you SO much for this series.

It is also the most wonderful way to make friends across the world.

@@UnderstatementJones1 So, there are a few tips that I can share.
      1. When cutting fragile and tiny parts off the sprue cut away from the part. What I mean is cut extra plastic with the part. This small nub of plastic is then easier to remove.
      2. For tiny parts, always first attack a small piece of masking tape to it before cutting it off the sprue. This will prevent the dreaded pinging, where the part goes flying off, never to be seen again.
      3. Use tweezers. This is a tool you should familiarise yourself with. It is very useful and will help you position and move smaller parts easily.
Rest of course is a lot of practice and goof ups and cursing :) Good luck.

Thank you, sir for such a well put together tutorial series. Given how many more people are either coming back to modeling or beginners to the hobby due to quarantine (myself included), I think a lot of us would be super grateful for another hand painted series :) (22:10) If you are taking requests, I’d like to place a vote for a tank. I saw the one in your “my first diorama” series and loved that one.

Thank you for this most excellent and informative set of vids on hand painting. Your skill level is extremely high and the painting results are fantastic. I used to make models as a boy, and now that I am nearing retirement I am going to take it up again. Your super handiwork convinces me that I do not need to buy an expensive spray gun; so there is a saving you have provided me with! More videos on painting would be greatly appreciated.
When I was a boy I would make smoke staining from the exhausts by using two pieces of masking tape running away from an exhaust with an increasing gap, and then set alight to a piece of sprue, and play the oily smoke between the two pieces of masking tape. After extinguishing the sprue, and removing the masking tape, I would smudge slightly the sharp lines of the smoke staining. Looking at photos of aircraft it is surprising how sharp edges some smoke staining could be. Before weathering I think it important to look at photos of the actual aircraft being modelled to see how much wear and tear there was, and where. Weathering can be overdone because so many aircraft did not last long enough to get any weathering. I also saw one modeller on You-Tube had put aluminium weathering on the fuselage of a De Haviland Mosquito! So know your subject!!

Just watched all 4 videos, and was amazed and really impressed with your skill with the brush! Great to get some insight into new tricks and techniques from an old modeller just getting back into the hobby after a 44 year hiatus (thanks COVID-19 lockdown)! I've found a couple of kits in a cardboard box that has followed me around, that I bought as a teenager back in 1976 that I never got around to. Will give your techniques a shot! Subscribed and liked!

The quality of Your videos is very good. It's very good that You explain how and why are You doing things. And the result of the brush painting is far better then seen on other hand paint videos.
I'm a beginner, and I don't want to spend much money to start, so is will try brush painting based on Your videos.

Oh well, I don't suppose you can please everyone.
But, in my humble opinion, this build has been a fantastic introduction for beginners wishing to get into model making using brushes alone, but with the additional realism achieved through selective and careful weathering. I humbly doff my hat to you, fine sir.
