Here is my opinion if Bucharest is worth visiting. It’s going to be very complicated and if anyone disagrees with my opinion that is totally fine. First thing I will say is, I have never been to Romania so I cant judge any part of the country. However I have done travel research about pretty much every country. While Romania as country is worth visiting, Bucharest not so much. This is not based on people’s assumptions but reading travel reviews on google and Tripadvisor. Some of the city’s main tourist attractions are considered quite disappointing like the National History Museum (only 3.5 rating on Tripadvisor, even weirder is the fact that this is the largest museum of a country and a European city of 2 million) or the Old Town. Also a lot of Bucharest’s main attractions are related to communism like the parliament building or communism museum. The average tourist will not be interested in this especially given the fact that communism has done a lot of harm to people and countries. A tourist who wants to stay out of politics or dark tourism will hate these attractions even more. I have also read that some tourists have complained that there is a lack of a very European vibe as there does not seem to be very many old buildings especially that this is a European capital city with 2 million inhabitants. However it still seems like there is interesting tourist attractions like the beautiful opera house, Museum of Art collections, Stavropoleos Monastery, etc. We all have different preferences, but I think the average tourist who has travelled around the world or has done lots of travel research will find Bucharest to be miles less interesting than like a typical major large European city like Vienna, Munich, Prague or even like Krakow, Brussels, Nuremberg, Palermo. Big European cities generally have a ton of tourists attractions and there just doesn’t seem to be much to do here especially given that it has 2 million inhabitants, is the country’s capital, and also the largest city. I have been reading lots of tourists saying that they much prefer Transylvania, smaller old cities like Sibiu or Brasov (which seem to be a lot more European because of the high concentration of old buildings) or the ancient monasteries like the Sucevita monastery. There just seems to be something that in most of the Balkan countries tourists seem to prefer the smaller cities and the country side by a mile than the capital cities. Bulgaria: capital Sofia, tourists favourite city Plovdiv, Albania: capital Tirana, tourist’s favourite city Berat, Bosnia: capital Sarajevo, tourists favourite city, Mostar, Serbia: capital Belgrade, tourists favourite city, Novi Sad, Montenegro: capital Podgorica, tourists favourite city Kotor (pretty much a village but has miles more tourist attractions than the largest city), Kosovo: Capital Pristina, tourists favourite city Prizren, North Macedonia: Capital Skopje, tourists favourite city Ohrid. While Ljubljana and Zagreb may not be as interesting as like the countries smaller cities (Celje, Split) and there countryside and neither are they as interesting like Prague or Vienna, they do still have lots of cool tourist attractions and seem to be very European. To end things off, it just seems to me that most of Bucharest’s cool attractions can be found elsewhere giving the city no special unique vibe.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. While travel research is helpful, I don’t think you should judge a city based on other people’s opinions or preferences. In my experience, the city has plenty to offer based on the type of experience you are looking for.

It s all about prefrences at the end of the day. I v been living in different western countries and big cities and capitals around Europe and my opinio is Bucharest is not that different. Just a big city with a lotmof traffic and plenty of stuff to do or to see. Probably with more contrat than other famous capitals because of the mixture of old buildings with the communist era blocks plus the new buildings. One correctio though, Romania is not a par rof the balkans, just arounf 5% of the eastern part may be included but geographically we re not in Balkans. God bless!
