  • Is it a good idea to graft oranges to a lemon tree? I grafted all of the branches of a lemon tree to oranges and I show my results in this video.

    Dan, I have more than 100 citrus varieties grafted to valencia orange interstocks on multiple rootstocks - and have never once seen a graft chimera. They are vanishingly rare.
    And FYI on incompatibility - I have never seen graft incompatibility with valencia/sweet orange interstocks, but plenty with lemon interstock, some with navel interstock, and some with grapefruit interstock. Keep up the good work.

      Thank you! From the papers that I linked in the description it sounds like there used to be about a 1 in 800 chance to get a graft chimera when trying to do it. But with some new techniques the odds are much improved, but they use newly sprouted seedlings so it seems that juvenility may be an issue. So I guess the chances of seeing it in a normally grafted tree would be much less likely than 1 in 800.

    Fascinating. I have never heard of rootstock affecting fruit, but I don't doubt it. I have heard people claim that they got high-chill fruit to bear, in a low-chill climate, by grafting to low-chill rootstock.

    • @Fruitmentor

      That's interesting. When some citrus varieties are grafted to a flying dragon rootstock, they are less susceptible to a freeze. So the rootstock can also make it possible to grow citrus in colder climates.

    I've mixed feeling on this video. It was somehow informative, but not for the reasons I was looking it. It was absolutely disappointing, that it was a video about graft kimera and you had no graft kimera at all to show. The easiest way to have a Kimera, is just get a kimera scion from some collector and graft it. Inducing a kimera by yourself involves lot of grafts, lot of luck (and possibly damaging the apex of the grafts with hydrochloric acid in the hope that will grow some new bud from the callus) . According to your fruit (I'm not a citrus grower, they don't grow well in northern Italy) , I've seen similar oranges in Sicily summer production (that it is usually discarded or given away for free) and really good ones in winter production of the same plants. So I suppose that enough water and cool weather can let your plants make decent or really good oranges even if rootstock is not the proper one.

    • @Fruitmentor
      @Fruitmentor  11 часов назад

      Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I decided to change the title and thumbnail of the video based on your comment to reduce the emphasis on that part of the video. The trees that bore the poor quality fruits shown in this video were properly watered and fertilized, so that was not the problem. I don't think water can solve the problem created by a poor rootstock choice.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but because I'm interested in biology and plants, I've done a good deal of research of my own. Branches grafted to a rootstock will grow just like they would have on their original stock, plus, depending on the rootstock, will be resistant to pests and diseases. If you think this is unclear or a falsehood, please do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

      Depending on the specific nutrients, proteins, enzymes, and antibodies provided to the scion from the rootstock, and the specific needs, strengths, and weaknesses of the scion, it's easy to imagine that different pairings of rootstock/scion will result in different levels of vigor and fruit quality. The only way to know for sure is to see hard data, which I'm sure many professional citrus growers have access to.

      If you read the scientific papers that I linked in the video description, you will see that grafting does indeed sometimes lead to a new variety called a graft chimera. ...This is entirely incorrect. That's not how any of this works... I'm very sorry to say, when you graft the result will always be that of the tree it was grafted from. It's like a tree transplant. Just because it got an arm from another tree doesn't mean it's going to mix those two trees.
    If you want to combine the plants, sure you can graft them both on one tree so it's easier, but you're going to need to ensure that the pollen mixes. So combine the lemon flower pollen, with the orange branch pollen, the result will still be a lemon and an orange, but if you plant the seeds of those, the result will be your mixture.
