The fact that Il Merlo had the opportunity to take out anyone in the Torrisi family--including the Don--and chose to ONLY shoot at Enzo is crazy
I guess they see how much of a problem Enzo is. But yeah it’s kinda odd to not try to get rid of the Don out of everybody, it would’ve done the most damage to the family.

@jlstudios8823 most missions yes, but grants you opportunities during sections when you have to drive to the mission. That's why the skip becomes available, incase you don't want to explore and just want to get on with it. There was a tutorial for this in CH. 5 but Berlin didn't see the prompt and soon after crashed and then skipped ride 😂

The Moors were definitely Black, North African does not constitute Caucasian or related like Asian or west Asian (Middle Easterners). And the word Moor was translated to mean Black, which is why they also had terms like BlackaMoor. Only after the Europeans overthrew them did they become servants and help them find the new world AKA America.

The clan they mention is the spadaro clan.
Sicilian was considered colored back in those days & were treated with the same rights in Italy proper as african american men and women were, which was very poorly - and most if not all poor or helpless Sicilians were enslaved for their lack of being able to fight it by the Caucasians.
Even to this day there is a huge divide between northen and southern italy and the Mediterranean because sicillians were considered "dirty" and were given the same rotten names and treatments back then, including incredibly violent slavery -- it's crazy asf but yeah -- Sicillian in general were actually only considered "Caucasian" and not Colored or Mediterranean etc when we migrated to America, in New York-
America was so racist at the time, that the amount of Sicillians that came over, would have turned the Majority over to the "colored" people -- so that changed Sicillians/ Italians demographic to white , the US government did that, so that the colored population did not outweigh the white.
Even now a lot of northern italians have a strong distaste for sicillians, for their dialects, their skin color for being tanner etc.
You can tell when you find a northern italian in this game, or a slave owner in general , like in the beginning of the game - you can see that the whole mine is all tan Sicilians, and the leader is a northerner.
That being said, all the Sicilians you see are pretty much indebted to the mafia at this time, because otherwise northerners would have came and took over and enslaved them all.

I can't remember off the top, I think it was merlo who was the northerner, or maybe that whole Spadaro family was I'd have to relook at it -- pretty sure it was like, Don Torrisi is Sicillian, he lived there in sicily, so he was still a Don, but it was more like a real mafia where it's all Sicilians sticking up for eachother - as twisted as it ends up being obviously.
but the Spadaro Family is basically just northerners who are coming in from up north and claiming territory and enslaving Sicilians iirc.
That whole Carusu/ Sulfer mine shit really happened back then, families selling their children to work, that whole shit -- this was a normal occurrence and one of the many things that surrounded how sicillians were treated by northern italian > then the broader world when we migrated to America.
but yeah just an example of extreme xenophobic and racist hierarchy shit that was at play at the time.

@jay-n_23 oh shit, I mean like I said I'm not sure if it was the spadaros something above them, I couldn't remember -- but basically how it worked irl -- most the time in the irl situations it was British/French Sulfur mine owners, and they would hire northern italians who would buy stake into the mines to be "overseers" of the slaves at the mines.
Best example I could give was in this episode for example, when the city was having the celebration on the holy day, and Merlo is fighting Enzo -- Enzo says something like: "What is wrong with you, these are all women and children" , and Merlo say's "*YOUR* Women & children", hinting at his family/ race.
Spadaro family land is Italian and most likely in upper sicily, but the parallel to real life is that northerners would buy stake in these mines from the british - living in either italy, or upper sicily and would be the slave owners essentially.
Sicillians at the time were frankly too poor, even if they had the option to buy stake in sulfur mines, they wouldn't invest in the mines they were forced to sell their son at, to pay off a debt to more slave owners -- that's the whole problem, Sicillians would sell their children to the mines to "pay off debt" to the colonials, to not get killed -- and this is what made these mines possible.
Not that Spadaro himself can't live in Sicily, but that he's hired to be the overseers of that place. It's all in-game, I don't think there's a solid in-your-face "hey this is racism" it's more in the storytelling and the full blown aspect of it.
quick edit: after looking back, the game lets it be know that the spadaro family owned their own mine, and then used the 'blood money' to fund their ventures - which is the parallel to the gabelloti. there's no mention in the game of another owner, so spadaro hired their own overseers within the spadaro clan.
I def thought they were talking “clan” as in gangs, not “Klan”. I knew about the prejudice that faced/s Sicilians and southern Italians but never about the enslavement, thanks for giving me sumn to read about!!
@DeathKnightSyxthanks for sharing. This is a very interesting fact. I didn't know Italian also had some sort of "colorism", I guess you would call it. I always thought that Sicily is only a place and the people were called Sicilians. I didn't know there were different Italians from the North that would be considered "clean". Reminds me of the Irish or even the Jewish people, how they were also once considered a different ethnicity from the white race. Now i wonder in the future if there will be other non-whites be acclimated to the fold too or maybe if there's a case where the other way around happened. I'm not from America so I don't know much about identity politics or whatever it's called, but I know the Mexicans or Hispanics are also now considered white too, well at least some of them are white-passing enough to identify as such.

I know this is probably a really out of the blue comment especially for a video of Berlin playing a mafia game but 50:27 really just hit for me because it’s kind of what I’m dealing with in real life right now and seeing that portrayed in a game that I’ve been playing and watching Berlin play just makes it resonate with me as a person as corny as that might sound.
I mean that in the way that I’m currently 5 months into a relationship that neither my parents or my partners parents would approve of if they knew what was going on and we’ve been trying to push through it together even if sometimes it seems like there’s no point or that it won’t work out, or with the fact that I have to consistently hear about how my parents would feel about me doing something like that knowing that’s what I’m doing now even though they don’t know it like how people have told Enzo to find a girl even though he has one as crazy as that sounds.
But I plan to keep pushing through with her despite what any other person might think of it because I know that if we’ve made it this far we can make it the rest of the way. But that’s it for my random comment section relationship dump thank you to anyone that read this far
