Does the Sewald signing mean the Cleveland Guardians may trade Emmanuel Clase for some lineup help?

- The Cleveland Guardians’ recent signing of right-handed reliever Paul Sewald to a one-year, $7 million contract further strengthens an already formidable bullpen. In the 2024 regular season, the Guardians’ bullpen posted a remarkable 2.57 ERA, the fourth-best since 1995 . Key contributors included Emmanuel Clase, who led the league with 47 saves out of 50 opportunities, and Hunter Gaddis, who maintained a 1.57 ERA over 78 appearances .
Sewald’s addition not only provides veteran experience but also offers depth, potentially allowing the Guardians to explore trading from their bullpen strength to acquire a star slugger. Relievers like Tim Herrin or Cade Smith, who have demonstrated consistent performance, could be attractive trade pieces. However, the front office would need to carefully weigh the impact of losing such key arms against the offensive boost a premier hitter would provide. Balancing these considerations will be crucial as the Guardians aim to enhance their lineup without compromising their pitching prowess

This trio talking baseball is some of the most enjoyable content in Cleveland sports talk. We need more of this.
True
I could listen to the 3 of you talk baseball all day. Please, give us more segments of this.
Think that Clase's subpar post-season performance was largely the impetus of bringing in Sewald. Closers are like field goal kickers. They run hot and cold. Their performance can change greatly from one year to the next. Sometimes within the same year.
People forget we get Tyler Stephan back this season from injury. We was a top reliever before injury too
Trevor* Stephan 😎
12:07 on… articulates my frustration. Thank you!
Please dont trade clase. 😢
Does Pitching still win? I mean 95 World Series game 6 was won 1-0 with great pitching.
I would take a full season lockout to get a salary cap and floor. Every other sport has it. It’s time.
@@BaseballNum5
TY I agree 💯👍
Try a 2 year strike.
I would take 5 years of no baseball if they fix the salary structure in the sport. Baseball used to be my favorite sport and I simply don't watch it any more. I still follow what the Guardians do, but I don't really care much in the long run. My team has no real ability to keep players if they are too good. They are forced by MLB to sift through the trash in order to compete. And to the credit of the Guardians front office, they do a fairly decent job doing that. I just can no longer get behind a sport that doesn't want an even playing field. My time is better spent elsewhere.
I agree. I also have been trying to tell myself to step away because the frustration in following this team and baseball in general is really not worth the stress and time commitment. I’m not quite sure how they fix the problem, but as articulated in the segment there needs to be disincentives for losing… too many owners have figured out they can be more profitable by not fielding the best team possible. As stated if you’re an owner and you depend on the team making money to support you, you should t be an owner.
Dolan's are cutting the entire payroll except for Jose to sell the remaining majority of their shares in 2028. This team is pathetic, yet outperform every year. Ownership refuses to get the supporting pieces to win it all. Doesn't matter anymore since the Dodgers will win the next 3 World Series anyways.
Unless you know baseball don't argue about something you know nothing about.
Blitzer needs to get more involved like John Sherman did. Of course the media in cleveland doesn't balls and guts to ask tough guestions. Blitzer needs to invest or sell his shares. He has a sign contract to take over majority ownership in 2028 but he and Harris are going 50 50 on new 76 arena. No taxpayers money. That were Blitzer money is going.
@@Nick-jd5ge LMAO sorry Lord of Baseball! What's your brilliant take on the status of the team?
I would trade Clase if the price is right. To me a closer has a lot of saves because he plays on a mediocre team that has a lot of close games. If the Indians won more games by bigger numbers he wouldn't have nearly the number of saves. I know he has a great arm and strikes out a lot but I would rather see the Indians win more games by 5 to 8 runs than have to have someone come in to save games.
Fuckin stupid if you think this team is mediocre they've had a top 5% winning percentage the last t years
0 chance we get another good bat before July, name a player we can afford who plays MI or CF/RF, isn’t a lefty, is an upgrade, in our payroll, who’s on a team that’s good enough to want an elite bullpen arm. Ian happ being on the cubs is half the reason they might want bullpen help. The bats who are available do not fit our team at all. And I have already vetted mlb ready prospects and the answer isn’t there either. Please stop thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the floor/celling all it will do is hurt Cleveland. We need our young players to blossom into superstars and then reevaluate.
Bringing a more even playing field to the sport will hurt Cleveland?
We need our young players to blossom into superstars? Why? So they can be traded a few years before they get their big contract that we have no ability to pay?
The only way we can excel in this salary market is to spend on positions that are cheap and get lucky with our reclamation projects. As soon as a player is too good, they have to be traded. Even if there is a floor and ceiling, the Guardians will still do this. But ideally, they could begin to consider keeping their own players due to a salary ceiling that's low enough where a small market team would entertain a big contract once in a while.
I don't understand MLB fans that think talent inequality across the league is actually a good thing for the sport. It's nonsense.
Bull, I like ya. You just come off like you’re defending the way baseball is currently. I know in football you like the bengals. Your accent tells me that you like a baseball team from New York. Either one. You like it as it is. A salary floor is more reasonable of a discussion.
Can we just move the guardians, sell the team?
Sell the browns first. There is the worst franchise out of the 3 Cleveland teams. This team and cavs only Cleveland teams worth talking bout
It would be foolish to trade Clase.
Depends what you get back.
Offense wasn’t the problem in the playoffs, it was the rotation, and the bullpen. Naylor and gimenez were our two most disappointing bats the second half of the season and into the playoffs. The bullpen was so great that they can only regress this year. The guardians have literally addressed their needs and have very exciting young prospects that’ll play a role in the field and lineup at some point this upcoming season and the majority of the fan base is complaining.
ALL unproven
@ShadowSelf216 manzardo and Santana and second half fry will equate out to whatever naylor would’ve produced and gimenez had a .638 ops that can be duplicated by any below average second baseman
@ all three of those not guaranteed and who is going to replace Gimenez’s defense? Platinum Glove defense that is.
I think Kwan was the biggest disappointment in the second half of the year. He went from .400 to under .300 the second have of the season. I would like to know his second half of the season batting average. I think it had to have been about 200 at best.
@@larryambrose2660 ill tell you, just looked it up on fangraphs. He batted .206 in the second half.
Lol Cubs fan Bull wants Clase…hack
Everyone wants Clase. I'm not sure it makes anyone a hack for wanting the best closer in baseball.
no. that was easy.
Can someone please tell Bull that the Dodgers have a 25 Yr TV deal worth 8B... 8 billion dollars. That's why they can spend so easily. Also, many fans need to realize that the net worth for the Dolan's is not 4B. That is the family trust. Our owners do not have as much money as fans and pundits would think. Please do just a simple Google search before saying they don't spend. They have a hard limit as to what they can spend.
Stop defending the ownership, they are fucking crooks
Lol .
Technically they don't spend. It's an accurate statement. The context however.. is that not having a cap means that teams can pay their way into the playoffs. Whilst teams like Cleveland can't.
@@brandonerwin7031 👍💯
Lol sure ? 😂
Feel free to just talk about baseball for the next 3 months.... Give yourself a break from the dumpster fire Browns
Clase to Baltimore for Mayo and Kjerstad.
