- I got this Wi-Fi speaker off of eBay for £18. It was sold as faulty, no power, and that's what I got!
Let's crack this open and see if we can work out what's wrong with it!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid copyright claim
Thumbs down for the copyright 😢

Hi Steve, love your videos, may I ask why they give a copyright strike? Sorry if this has been asked before but I don’t understand how they let you say brand names and show video footage of games with the music of the game playing which is all copyrighted but yet, you play a bit of a song and they strike you for it? Regards….a fellow Steve
@@Flash_Of_Lightning it's a bot that does that.
@@Flash_Of_Lightning Legally, there's no difference between playing a game and playing a song. The difference is game companies generally err on the side of "publicity is good" over "kill the blighter".
I can explain why you got a spurious reading out of circuit. The two pins you're calling "ground" are actually a normally closed switch. Plugging in the power jack opens the contact, so you got the full voltage on one pin (the one the barrel of the plug connects to) and a spurious reading on the other, now floating one.
This is used in devices which have non-rechargeable batteries, to break the connection to the batteries when you plug in an adapter. As they say: hope this helps.
Usb: has blutooth symbol on it
Steve: "what is that? Is that wifi?!"
classic Steve
Could possibly swap it out with another Bluetooth dongle and connect to it without the pure app
Also steve: winbond: thats gonna be the wifi chip isnt it? (Clearly ram/flash for the main cpu)
@@309electronics5 your joke doesn't land as well as the ubiquitous Bluetooth symbol.
I didn't even see the symbol but guessed it was Bluetooth.
You bought a pure brick online and had it delivered via the mail...
I have the same speaker - you can use it as a normal Bluetooth speaker - no app required, just pair it as usual.
Your comment needs to be seen.
doesnt work that way at end of videos he say he try conned to Bluetooth but does nothing at all
@@kittyztigerz no
He's too stupid to do that. That's why we watch this channel.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the reason for the take over the power button is the same reason I do something similar. I like to sleep with my room as dark as possible and most devices these days have either green or blue LED lights for their buttons and power status. So I tend to use take to cover them up. That power button seems obviously like a lite up button. The only ones I don't cover are red lights because red isn't bright and it doesn't bother me at in the dark plus I love the color red.
yeah, that's my thought - the power button glow can be obnoxious, so covering it helps block the light (though I usually don't use duct tape cause it leaves gunk)
@@Framed-Naraht I have some tape that is mostly opaque, it dims especially those hyper active blue LEDs to a far more acceptable level. It took years and years to develop blue LED and now all they do is annoy us.
He came to that conclusion himself in the video.
you have too much time on your hands!
@@getfitter928 because I commented? Does that not imply that you too have too much time on your hands since you also commented?
The usb Bluetooth dongle is probably to avoid having to pay for certification of the speaker. They use an already certified Bluetooth radio instead. Probably. Maybe…
Also perhaps can be upgraded with a newer bluetooth dongle?
IT guy: "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
Steve: "Have you tried disassembling and reassembling it again?"
Have you tried sticking it up your arse?
Another cracking video Steve thanks, I managed to fix a PS3 and a XBOX 360 off the back of your videos, the kid was well chuffed. Anyways Ive seen you videos about your equipment and what they are however could you let us know where you get your consumables. Components, solder, flux and tape etc. As it seems to me you got them in bulk from somewhere ?
Thanks.
My Pure Amp/Subwoofer 5,1 system just gave up after a mere 22 years... (might be the cable). Headphones are my GOTO, but occasionally I like it room filling.
It's going to be genuine fun replacing it; I'm not about to settle for less, however it was very good. If you want it I'll send it your way. Woofer seems fine, it's the middle piece, or the cabling. I wouldn't require you returning it.
Really enjoy your work/vidz.
I wonder if the black tape over the power button is to stop the room being lit up at night, I have electrical tape all over the place in my room, I put black electrical tape over the LEDs then put a little pin-prick in it, so there's still an indicator LED but not one that lights up the room! Stupid LEDs.
Yep! Hahah. Especially the blue ones. THE GOGGLES! THEY DO NOTHING!! 😎
Yep, I think you're spot on Mr MadeAThing! 😁
I actually did the same with my wifi router which is in my bedroom. Its a deco m4 and i tell my father to turn the led off but he always forgets so i took matters in my own hands and taped all the leds. Or i unplug the gear
@@devttyUSB0 The blue ones really are the worst. I have a tower fan in my bedroom that has blue lights and I have had to cover the lights because without that there is a pretty noticeable blue glow lighting up that part of the room all the way up to the ceiling. I also took it apart and removed the stupid speaker so it wouldn't loudly beep every single time I press a button. Stupid modern electronics.
I actually have gone one step further now... man I'm dull 😂... if it's something I've made/repaired that I don't think I'll sell on, I actually bought some black nail polish (sadly the old ones I had in my cupboard from a previous life had gone rock hard), carefully mask and then paint a layer or two on, then again a pin to prick a tiny dot of light through. Electrical tape always ends up becoming a sticky mess. If a flat surface I guess maybe sellotape and then nail polish, so that if you need to remove it, you don't need to use acetone.
Hmmmm... I think I've just invented something by accident.
*Adds to list of things*
It's worth double checking the polarity of a DC power supply vs the label on the device, not just correct voltage. Reverse polarity can give you a bad day.
App loads and works on note 10 and older devices. The quality of sound is very good. I have a dozen all purchased for under $30 each on ebay. Party mode does sound through an entire home with no strange echos.
This would be an interesting one to try and turn into a bluetooth speaker.
you can just pair via Bluetooth on the phone and it works fine. also, the pulsing green means it's in pairing mode, once paired the green goes solid.
You're a brave guy to fully assemble without testing. Or maybe foolish but love your content my friend!
You’ve got to love these simple fixes.
“He can’t keep getting away with this!”

Happy to be part of that 140k.
Thanks for the fascinating content!
Bro u make my Saturday awesome!! Thank u
HAY Steve, Regards to the App WIFI function. I had a similar issue with an old LG Wireless speaker (Music Flow) I was not able to download the App from the Store but I could get the Music Flow APK from LG support page and works fine. Alternatively check in Google Home see if pops up there to add as a new device while the speaker is in pairing mode. Poss might not be visible in Google home until you have paired it with Pure App tho. Hope this helps🤔
I've got a pure one internet radio which is now a paper weight, because they have closed down the server it connects to for internet radio! Fortunately I can now get french radio stations via my smartphone now!
At a guess, the contacts in the DC jack are failing and the jack will need replacing at some point (if you can get the pairing sorted etc).
Probably had the tape over the light to block it at night when it was on. I have several devices I've tapped because the lights are always on and it's super annoying.
Your raps always remind me of Goldie Looking Chain if you ever heard of them. This one in particular sounds like Eggsy from the group.
New camera angle Steve? Very....... Nice! Get in there!!!
There are connector (Like dell laptop chargers) that hav outer sleeve inner sleeve and centerpin connections.
Hey Steven just a suggestion the internal USB port yes it might be a Wi-Fi chip that is in there but has about replacing it with a Bluetooth chip
They are out of hand with copyright claims
I would hazard that was bluetooth dongle and not the wifi. You might be able to connect via bluetooth with you phone.
Nicely done Steve!
Hi Steve I have recently discovered your channel and I am hooked! Looking to get into repairs myself, how did you gain so much knowledge?
Don't suppose you ever do synths?
i see you took down the previous controversial video.....
I'm no electronic engineer or electrician, but I remember something about black outs and brown outs being opposites of each other. Like instead of getting too much current and blowing things out it's a very short and very sudden dip in current?
Quickly approaching 150k!
In a recent video @Adriansdigitalbasement speculated whether plugging a 220v device into 120v would cause it to fail. Commenters pointed out that reducing voltage ups current or something. Blame Ohm.
You taip up the power button if you dont want the light at night etc, many do listen to sleep sounds or music for sleeping. Me included.
Can all the Patreons change their names to "Orange" or "Purple" so we can see Stez's true skills?!
Very useful information. I now know to never purchase a PURE product.
Except tomato PUREe. That's legit.
Cpc has some tips for desoldering gun. I got some different sizes when I got my Duratool. They goes very cheap like a pound or something for each tip
Tape could be to hold power on so they can use remote sockets etc maybe or just the light bugs the crap outta them and attracts different bugs
You're probably getting 5V as a backwards way to directly power that USB dongle inside under the tape.
5 volt will be for usb circuit. 3.3 will come from the 5v somewhere
Totally expected The Lightning Seeds for the outro song…
You say it's not supported anymore but I believe it's still being sold on Amazon .. oh boy
The USB dongle inside is a Bluetooth adapter. The winbond chip is wifi. Shouldn't need app for Bluetooth
The funny thing is, yes...yes im also known as the winged healer. 😅 how did you....
😂 I know everything! 😅
That usb dongle looks like a bluetooth dongle? Regardless it's great when devices lose functionality when they are paired to some stupid app that stops supporting it so, at least this one still has some use
I'm guessing the tape was to cover an obnoxiously bright blue LED.
Power button taped up because it has a light on it, and those things can catch your eyes when you're trying to sleep.....
Tape on the power button is because they had it in the bedroom and the light is to bright. My best guess.
Side load the old version of the app.
Wouldn't it be great if each product came with a schematic or you could get a 'Haynes' manual.
A lot of products have service manuals available for engineers that include circuit diagrams and parts lists. Sometimes you can find them by googling/searching the FCC or CE certification for the device. This will also show you which other products are the same but badged with different "brand" names.
I thought for sure it was going to be an issue with the power button. Did you look at the Bluetooth connections on your phone and see if you could pair to it that way instead of the useless app?
Have you tried pairing it to your phone via bluetooth menu?
the counter is getting ridiculously high, you got to melt some plastic soon!
What a coincidence, just happened to have a ‘Pure’ 15 volt adapter for the ‘Pure’ speaker.
I think he accidentally swapped them.
Steve (et al) Am i mistaken or is the PCB cracked? 5:55
Changing the usb dongle might fix the outdated issue, "might"
Might need to give this one the office space printer treatment
I have a ps4 that doesn’t detect controllers. Would you be interested in it for a fix?
Yes ... cool dodgy radio? But obsolete speakers 😢 lol had a smart bulb like that ...
Haven't watched this yet, but I've really been enjoying all of your videos. I fixed a ps4 controller thanks to you! was a limited edition one as well which cost around 4 gbp. NICE.
Is the 5v supply a virtual ground/reference voltage rail for the op amps in the circuit?
Hasd the bluetooth icon on the usb-thingy
Win bond is a bios chip
A tinkerer can never have too many different power supplies.
Hey Steve, I always had a question m, what do you do with all the products you fix? Do you sell them?
Oh, I used to have one of those. They sounded great, but the app was w.nk.
Maybe you can change that bluebooth adapter with a bluetooth generic device to make it just work wihout software.
Thinking the same: what about the BT adapter?
Its a Bluetooth speaker and wifi so connect via bluetooth
I do like you vidoes.. frim norway.
lol pure and simple
6:44 - "micro volts"??? Is that not called milli volts? Bright bulb.
what solder flux do you use ?
Gizza smile.....
I tape over the power button because they pyt stupidly-bright LEDs in them.
bet the tape was due to the light on the button being annoying at night.
This is why I hate the trend of having devices which require a service to run. It only takes a service to go offline or update its supported devices and you have a brick.
I like Pure products in themselves, I have a nice little DAB radio in the kitchen which is "old school" (no Wi-Fi, no app) and will work for as long as DAB or DAB+ keeps its current format. Just a shame they chose to go down this line for some of their products.
Gordon!! :D
Connect using Bluetooth.
Everyone who covers the leds with tape.. why don’t you just close your eyes? That’s what I do when I go to bed!
Why would you tape up the power button you ask?
Because every electronic device made nowadays wants to use that Retna scorching blue led ring light.
If you sleep to music, it feels like the radio is the eye of Sauron burning a hole through your eyelids straight to your soul.
Yeah, I’d tape it up too. Easy to press the button through the tape.
why in the world would you need an app for bluetooth, thats a fail on pures part for sure. I wonder however if you could solder those speakers with a unit from another device to make another device sound better that has crappy speakers
Off of, Off, From eBay 😒
i still think the extra blue tooth needs investigating ?
Blu tooth dongle
Hey at least you get a free bluetooth dongle... that dont work anymore...
What is this little Bear thing ? WTF
Your videos are better without the annoying music interludes
Wifi pairing mode should still work without the app, it should just come up as a Wifi access point.
Its Pure SH**
🤔 Really... so you just happened to have a 15 volt adapter... that said PURE on it... for your PURE speaker... 🙄 I have loved watching your content for a long time. But this one just seems almost made up. Say it isn't so...
There should be a law against devices stopping to work when an app doesn't get updated anymore.
The app still exists, he was just too dumb to find it.
I think I've seen you accidentally identify winbond chips as wireless ICs twice now so I figured I'd mention that Winbond only makes various kinds of memory and flash storage chips. So while they tend to hang around close to microcontrollers or processors they're not generally indicative of anything more specific by themselves.
Loved the video as always, keep up the great work! ❤
4:58 did you plug that dongle back in? It's clearly a Bluetooth dongle, therefore the speaker should work without any special app via Bluetooth.
"I'm going to put this back together...yep" a man who knows his audience. Love it.
I would hazard that was bluetooth dongle and not the wifi. You might be able to connect via bluetooth with you phone
the bluetooth logo was a dead giveaway
Regarding the 5V reading: an explanation could very well be you are seeing "ghost voltage" (not sure what else to call it) from a floating leg IE one of the legs is not connected anything. It is not connected to GND and it is not connected to the supply.
When you are using an ordinary multimeter you are attaching a 1+MOhm resistor (see datasheet for your multimeter) cross the two leads. If there is any capacitive coupling to a floating lead then it might show spurious voltage. Another way you can get a false reading is if there there is high resistance between the supply and the floating leg then you might see a voltage but that connection is not able to carry any current.
Let's say your multimeter has an internal resistance of 1MOhm Resistance. If the connection between the supply voltage and the floating leg is 3MOhm then you will see a voltage drop of 3.75V across your multimeter (U = R* I, we know U = 15V, R = (1M + 3M) etc....). But the 3MOhm connection is not enough to carry any current worth of note. So it is effectively disconnected. Some modern multimeters have a Low Z / Low Resistance mode which can reduce these kinds of spurious reading. Another tool (and something used by electricians) is the so called "voltage testers" which applies a higher load (I believe the load is usually around 200 kOHm, which provides some current draw but not enough to trip and RCD by itself).
Steve, that USB nub inside the speaker was a USB Bluetooth adapter... so perhaps if you replace that with a generic USB Bluetooth adapter it might eliminate the need for an app.
Weirdly awkward way of putting Bluetooth in your speaker, but also kinda prescient if you can just replace that with a generic one.
I was thinking this exactly. That's the only reason the app would be needed hopefully
