My favourite director every film he makes is a masterpiece. And they all look stunning in 4k 👌
I can’t wait to watch them all, as he’s my favourite director as well.
Great overview - I bought his 4K boxset which includes all these films except Tenet - was a great vfm buy. Glad you rated Dunkirk so highly, as a Brit I love this particular film.
Tarantino had some very nice things to say after rewatching the film in a British cinema.
I've got Dunkirk and think the picture is stunning. Possibly the best 4k picture I've seen! The audio isn't bad either!
I’ve got a few titles that do look noticeably better, but it’s definitely a very short list.
Great rundown. My two favorites would be Dunkirk and The Dark Knight. Dunkirk is one of the best looking 4K blu-rays I have seen period and it is no slouch in the sound department.
Just a quick correction, I stated that Inception had IMAX scenes, this is obviously incorrect as it has a fixed aspect ratio of 2:40.1. I recently watched the 3D edition of Doctor Strange (which has similar “world changing shots” ) and I was confusing the IMAX in that film to Inception’s similar scenes.

Great list Adam! I have all of the movies on 4K disc , except Dunkirk. Was thinking about doing a Tenet/Inception double feature this week.
I have all but 1 (The Prestige) of these 4k discs. I mostly agree with your ranking here. Such dynamic picture and sound without DV on these discs. However I wish Nolan would go smaller scale for his next film.
The docking scene in Interstellar is simply magnificent. (My favorite movie of all time lol)
I love that Nolan doesn’t use Atmos or DTS-X. All the audio is fantastic regardless and is Oscar worthy.
Why do you consider this a "feature". Do you just see those format as gimmicky?
Batman Begins 4K has the "pink look" problem for whatever reason. The red is just a little too pronounced. TDK and TDKR don't have this issue. TDKR in particular looks unbelievable. Definitely one of the best 4K dics I've ever seen. Prestige has it too, but it's not as prominent.
Didn't have that problem on my 65" LG C9.
Le Prestige is my favorite film of the bunch. Hard to beat Dunkirk though for the visual and audio delights
Dark knight !!!!!!!! 10/10
One thing you fail to mention is nearly all if not all of Nolan"s 4K UHD's use the Theatrical 5.1 mixes. NOT the near-field mixes found on all the other Home Media formats. Near-field mixes are very common on all Home Media. They are designed to be played in small spaces (i.e. your home). Theatrical mix are designed for the much larger commercial theaters. The only other disc that I am aware of that offers both near-field and Theatrical mix is the Criterion edition of The Game.
I like these videos! Do you think you'll do Ridley Scott? He also has many movies available in 4K. He's another favorite director of mine along with Nolan, Villeneuve, Scorcese, and Spielberg.
He’s on the list for sure.
Did you know there are 2 different disc versions of The Dark Knight, a double layer and a triple layer disc
Great reviews! Agree on Batman Begins, its my fav just too bad color scheme just too warm. Nolan IMAX is satisfactory, that's how it should look on tv
I have most of his 4Ks
all of them looks good
I knew it! and i share your point of view putting Batman Begins at last position
I love Nolan but I have a full powered Sonos system so no physical copy unfortunately 🤭
TENET best transfer period
man, isn't the prestige only available in that collection from a few years ago? I haven't see a standalone 4k disc or a digital upgrade to 4k either. It's so sad as it is one of my favorites!
Their is a standalone for the Prestige, it’s hard to get sometimes.
Nolan just sticks with normal HDR which is great but he doesn't go out of his way integrating Dolby Vision in his physical 4k uhd Bluray....I wish Oppenheimer has Dolby Vision... personally no issue in sound quality the dts hd ma 5.1 is a great theatrical sound with high bit rate works wonders on my home theatre
I need to re-watch Dunkirk I think as the 1st viewing left me a little disappointed.
I'm also left wondering why I haven't considered Inception as a purchase on 4K. I enjoyed the film, but never had it as must-buy for some reason........
Agreed with your rankings except I would have moved Inception father down the list (due to the film grain and no expanded IMAX aspect ratio) and moved Tenet higher.
What is the film grain?
Interstellar uses DNR 😮
I really did not care for how the snow scenes looked on the 4k for Inception. Look really blown out at least to me. Love Interstellar!
Wish the corn scenes looked much better on 4k hdr. Heard Roger Deakins praise the sequence.
@@vb8428 Though I've seen the movie many many times, I've only watched the 4k version of Interstellar once. I can't say on that viewing that I was blown away.
@@dancole6867 Don't know if it's the angle or what but I just rewatched that scene and it's glorious.
@@vb8428 To confirm we are talking about the same thing/movie... when you refer to the corn scene, you are talking about interstellar, yes? And when you say you rewatched that scene, you are talking about interstallar, still? Or are you talking about the snow scene I reference from Inception?
@@dancole6867 Interstellar
Hey all, as a fellow owner of the Tenet 4k disc, which scenes are we referring to where dialogue is troubling? I don't notice any issues on my setup (I have 7.2.2).
Just search RUclips for Tenet dialogue. It’s a topic a lot of people are talking about. Not a setup issue
The sailboat scenes and last battle
@@vb8428 ahh thank you very much. I'll have another watch of those. They're even volume with LR but still audible for me. However my center channel is very mismatched timbre from my LR and I have my LR towed away for soundstage. I can imagine how properly calibrated setups would completely muffle the speech in those scenes.
@@NeoKronos44 Fact that there is even dialogue in those scenes is ridiculous.
Are there IMAX scenes in Inception? I don't remember any but I only have the DVD
Their aren’t. I posted a correction in the pinned comments. I recently rewatched Doctor Strange in 3D and it has similar world changing shots that are in IMAX and was remembering those.
@@MovieGuy365 thanks for the update. I was hoping it did, because this movie would have been perfect for it
@@troyn8269 Maybe for 4k viewing but as a whole tight, streamlined film am glad he was convinced not to use IMAX on it.
Which 4k should I get between parasite, close encounters and Madmax fury road?
Madmax if you have surround sound. No question.
Mad Max, no question about it!
I picked up Tenet and Inception for $1CAD each from our Walmart return store a while back. Was still disappointed in Tenet and I was going in with low expectations.
Tenet sucked by the standard of the Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure series, much less Nolan's.
Is there actually any artistic merit to him not using the Dolby formats? A cynical take would be, he does want to pay Dolby the licensing fees.
Inception on 4k is famously terrible and much worse than the regular bluray version, with overcooked HDR and terrible, soft DI scan upscale. It's a pretty well-known fact in the UHD community. This ranking is totally wrong in terms of picture quality, I can't believe you actually seen the films and ranked Inception above Dunkirk or Tenet.
Very disappointed in TENET. I shrugged through it!
I can’t stand Nolan generally, but I will give him credit where it’s due - Insomnia is very good & Dunkirk positively blew me away. When you lock him into simply technical film-making he’s excellent, just keep him & his brother away from creative control.
And yet you watch his stuff?🤡
Control is a double edged sword, without control in their earlier films they'd have never broken through.
I’ve seen several of his films, what’s your point? There are all sorts of reasons someone may see a movie. Boredom, to please someone else more interested, in response to positive word of mouth.
I’ve seen most of the movies where he fills the screen with pseudo-intellectual gobbledygook & in my experience those films tend to make stupid people feel like they’re smart.
