Dude, what a sweet tutorial. Not only did you explain how, but you explained why.
Great stuff
+Beastby thanks :)
just used your 4.5 on my same board and chip and max temps with my nocturna 14h is even on stress testing 72oC very happy should I try a bit more voltage and 100mhz but I'm happy with this oc. Thanks again and greetings from the UK :)
Hi. What percentage are your fans, especially the CPU are running at?
Great info! Even after 2 years!, Thank you, sir!
Great tutorial! Thanks for making it!
I'm scared to death i hope it works Ayyyyy thx so much it worksss
I oc my cpu(core i7 4790k) 4.5ghz 1.25v and it randomly freezes everytime my cpu hits 90-100% for 10-20mns with 65-70c.
I'm using an i5-4690k on an asus z97-a.. My idle temp sits at 54c. Any reccomndations? Im running this with a thermaltake rgb water cooler and around the same numbers as you.4.4GHZ rather than 4.5
You just made my 4790k that I was thinking of switching out. brand new! Thanks for a really good To-do !
What did you OC to?
I'm not him but I got my i7 4790K to 4.7GHz @ 1.300V. It looks like 4.8GHz is just like a wall I'm hitting with this chip. Even today that chip is blazing fast with a NVMe SSD
@Tytan64 And in the last program that uses, that puts 1344, I also put 1344?
@@Inkrementalgeber 4790k is epic and it will stay that way for a few more years.
@@04swiftstang I'm using a Ryzen 7 2700X on a Crosshair VI Hero now :D
Overclocked my CPU today using your instructions and came out great! Stress test temps never went over 65 C. Idle temps were at 34 C using the H50
what cpu are you using?
i have the same cooler
I've done also the same on my i5-4690k stress test higher temp was 72
I cant find the XMP
I thought we can use C-state and Speedstep while overclocking these ? Also why not adaptive voltage?
S-T-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y
Great guide thank you!
Question - I have the same setup as you and set everything as you did. While running the custom Prime95 test, my power is reaching p to 67 watts, where yours is running at 125ish. Why is that?
For real this is the best tutorial on RUclips for overclocking with a z97 progamer. Thank you so much, great job
Heads up for Oculus Rift users experiencing Code 31 error with their HMD
Re-enabling SpeedStep and C-States fixed the problem for me. You're welcome :)

I've never been brave enough to overclock my CPU and always felt my i5-4690K was holding my 1080Ti back just a little bit. I basically copied this to a tee and I finally have a CPU I can be content with! Thanks so much buddy for such an easy to follow and instructive video. You've earned yourself a new subscriber.
Literally moments after I posted this, I got a blue screen with a "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT" message after about 15 minutes of running Prime95! 😂 A quick Google search seems to suggest an unstable overclock. Help?
@@tylerb2438 I'd suggest you to use techpowerup there are pros that can help you on this.
@@amortalbeing Well I messed about some more after restoring my BIOS to default settings and at the moment I seem to be fine (touch wood) running at 4GHz and 1.100 Core Voltage. I know that's a very basic overclock, but it's something at least.
@@tylerb2438 glad to ear that, but dont stop trying! I messed up once too, and I couldnt flash my bios for like 2 days! I was going crazy, thanks to dear God, however, it finally got resolved and since I have been using 4.5Ghz at 1.23 (I have 4790K). so research first as much as you can and then go for it. Techpowerup helped me alot by the way. Good luck to you
:)
My 4690K doesn't break a sweat (less than 70'C) @4.5Ghz (on all four cores) @1.24V - my 4790K hits 90'C @4.5Ghz (all four cores) @1.28V - Good job the Hyperthreading and increased cache more than makes the upgrade cost worthwhile.
2020/11/08 💯❤️ tried it.
Hello bro, i had msi motherboard before and my 4790 was 20 degrees with no stress.
Then i bought this motherboard and my 4790 is 40 degrees with no stress.
People said i have to decrease voltage, what do you propose? And how much should it be if they are right about voltage?
This video is amazing. Have had my pc for 6 years now and this will be my first real attempt at OCing 4790k!
What did you end up setting for an overclock and what cooler do you have
@@MrBlazingninja 4.6, I tried 4.7 but it kept crashing. I’m pretty positive it is due to my really old AIO
@@3monsterbeast hey what voltages did you use for 4.6ghz
Simple and straight forward instrucions! Managed to get 4.6 with the same settings.
Thanks for the perfect guide! :)
Please help me, at Ai tweaker I dont have half of these options?
followed exactly all the steps. running 4.7ghz @ 1.25v , stress tested for 10 mins, seems good. avg temp at around 75 celcius. cooler is coolermaster hyper 212 led. but I switched out the pwm fan with the cheap coolermaster casing fan. running at lower rpm, but i love this coz it's silent. Thanks for the great guide.
Can you overclock like this without XMP?
Please help me, I have an i7 4790, 16gig ram at 1600mhz, I did your exact settings and restarted the pc. It is now stuck on the Asus logo startup where is says press del or f2 to enter bios... However nothing is responding, please help me to get it back to operating system
Was very impressed with the video! Keep up the dope work and check out my channel if you get a minute. I'd jump at the chance to collaborate with you sometime. KUDOS!
Disabling speedstep seems a bit wasteful power wise.
Xmp profile 2@1.6 v and maxing at 4.4 ghz.. the extra power draw doesn’t seem worth the marginal performance but nice to know how
what if i clock it to 44 and core voltage on 1.180 should i do down clock the cpu cache too ? or leave it there ??
Bro for me when I try on 4.5 and did the test my pc get freez after that I did declock the MHz from 4.5 to down 4.4 just the clock it work fine so its normal then and I did the test for 15 mints its pass
When I try to set the 1 core ratio limit it just goes back to 39 stck clock speed for the 4690k
thanks this helps:) - from a 4790k user in 2020 :)
I overclocked my 4790k using the EzMode (F7 in the bios) and selected the water cooler (I have a Kraken x62). My cpu is now running at 4798.88MHz at 1.375 volts, tempature is ~40-50, 50-65 while gaming, is that ok? and could i go up to 5.0 ghz or should i just stay at 4.8 or even go lower?
Only +100 MHz for turbo!?? Why? Due to stock air cooler?
I buy i7-4790K and I would get ~5.2 GHz (default as 4.4GHz turbo) with Cooler Master 212 EVO cooler, ok? But HT disabled.
My current i5-2500K@4.5GHz (3.7GHz turbo default) still is working since enable OC on feb 2013. :)
voltage?
+Andres Celano i5-2500K@4.5GHz at 1.31V vcore was stabled. :)
I tested new i7-4790K@5.0GHz at 1.398V without HT, my room with ~18ºC and I benched 3DMark06 except CPU tests unchecked running Win XP x86 SP3... But I got freeze while GT2 during ~20 seconds.
+Ricardo Rodrigues huh that's good, I did 4.4 at 1.35 but it was unstable, I think I have a bad chip.
+Andres Celano You're using stock air cooler (Intel), probably. You can buy better aircooler. ;)
Edit: aah... You should clean dust CPU cooler and rest your PC. ;)
+Ricardo Rodrigues no, I have a hyper 212 evo, weird thing is, I tested it by running Prime95 for 6 hours and it was ok. On all my games it did well, it was on Far Cry 4 it crashed. I know it is the CPU since I put it at stock and now it is fine.
I tried this with the same setup and all the temp goes to 100 instantly and if I look at my cpu in task manager it says I only have half my CPU GHz while I stress test. Im a doing something wrong here im scared to break everyhing lmao
@@garlicboy5692 Its not my main CPU I was just having fun testing things out, turns out the cooler is extremely bad and couldnt keep up at all
excellent tutorial, i have that same board and bought it with the intention of oc'ing the 4790k i finally got two years after it came out. 78 degrees max under load at 4.6 with these voltages, gonna see if it can do 4.7 or 4.8
i have started tonight on a computer i got hold of, it's the mATX version, let's see how far i can get.
I think I just fucked up my cpu !
Hi.
I have the Asus z97 pro wifi AC (not gamer) motherboard. Can I use the same settings?
Also note that I don't have xmp settings in my motherboard.
Any help is appreciated.
Shehroz Khan Try upgrading to newest bios. It might be a beta version, but I think it patches some bad windows exploits.
Hmmmm. Will try that.
Such a bummer I can't get my used $300 4770K system to accept any of these settings. WHEA errors every time. Any idea if it might be the memory? Whenever I touch the xmp profile, it all fails.
This video helped me. Would you keep cache at 40 if I want to go up to say 4.7 or 4.8 ghz. I have the cooling and able to get it stable with 1.29 volts. But using this set up I got my own profile of 4.5ghz down 5 degrees. Maybe because of the cache idk but either way thanks.
+James Emsley you can keep the cache low for the start and once you reach the maximum core clock you can try to increase the cache and see if it's still stable. The core is more imprtant than the cache tho.
I have a problem with an i5 4690k and an asus z97-A motherboard, when I enter default mode it works for 2 minutes and turns off, but when I set the AI overclock tuning to manual mode my PC works perfectly, help! pls bro
Does anyone else's 'per core' clock ratio not work?
I can get 46x on all cores working fine without a problem, but if for example I used the per core function and set it as 46x, 46x, 46x, 39x then no thread would run at anything higher than 39x. I can never get it to go higher than the lowest core radio.
It's not a heat/throttling issue, I have latest BIOS, etc, etc. Any ideas? Thanks.
Tx66 same here
Excellent video. Thank you.
My bios looked almost the same. Except I don't have the XMP-option so I went for "manual" instead.
I'm sure I lack some changes that the XMP does but otherwise I'm good.
if i am correct, all he did was increase the CPU speed just by 100mhz. as far as i know, 4790k with hyperthreading, it supports 4.4ghz already. 4.4ghz and 4.5ghz shouldnt be make much of a difference. just keep your hyperthreading on.
thank u for this easy to follow and understand video.
using you video I have my Asus maximus hero VII and 4790k happy running @4.5 using your specs. tempted to go to 4.6 with same voltage but will see how it lasts on a long cpu intensive game as is first.
once again thank u.
it runs cooler at 4.6 :)
Hey man is the cpu still alive (:
I'm running a 4770K at 4.6Ghz and I'm using the XMP for DDR3-2400. I noticed a big difference in fps performance playing games when I pushed the CPU cache ratio up to 44 (4400Mhz). I was just wondering what voltage do you recommend using for the CPU cache ratio. I have it set at 1.155V right now, and I have my CPU voltage set at 1.262V It seems pretty stable and doesn't get too hot using liquid cooling. Is it dangerous to raise the CPU cache ratio voltage past 1.150V? Thanks
+der8auer I'm a bit confused 😕 when i go to EzMode under information it's saying my cpu speed is @ 4.00GHz then under it says speed 816 MHz?? Now under extreme tweaker CPU turbo mode frequency 4590MHz then under hardware monitor says frequency 816 MHz! I don't understand.. Could you please advise me. I have the same MB as you are using in this video if that helps and an I7 4790k. Thanks Jimmy
I have an ASUS Z97-K, i5 4690k and, 16gb of ram, my wc (corsair h60 with 2 corsair sp120 fans in push/pull config) will it cool my cpu properly if i overclock it at 4.5 ghz ?
I've used this toturial on my i7 5775C (opted for 3900 MHz because thats the max the cpu would do stable on my old board) but the cpu drops frequency while running prime to about 2600 MHz... It runs prime at about 3400 MHz if not overclocked... Anyone any suggestions what I can do?
At 4.5GHZ temps went straight up to 100C. Lowered down to 4.2GHZ and still 100C straight away. Any ideas? I’m on air cooling, Hyper 212 EVO
4770k at 4.5ghz and 1.2v consumes ~100watt. Perhaps your voltage is too high, around 1.35-1.4v. If you have set the 42 core ratio and 1.2v and still have 100°C, then it's possible that you:
Forgot to apply thermal paste
Forgot to remove the sticker from the base of your cooler
If everything is done correctly, then the only remaining possibility is an old thermal paste under the processor lid. You need to delid the processor and replace it with new thermal paste or liquid metal. Before delidding, try installing a more powerful cooler for testing. If you still have 100°C, then it's definitely a 200000% old thermal interface, and delidding is necessary.
So this overclcok will give you a constant speed of 4500, not just in turbo? I think you forgot to mention the 'boot performance mode' setting needs to be changed to 'boost' otherwise the overclcoking will have no effect, at least it didnt on my z97-a.
yo mate , i have a i7 7700k and msi z270 gaming plus
with everything default (ddr4 2133mhz ram) core x45 core 2 x44 core 3 x44 core 4 x44 , 65º max temp
when i turn on XMP extreme ram profile its sets auto to 2400mhz and some voltages go high and all the cores set to x45 x45 x45 x45
70-80º easy how can i put my rams to 2400mhz having normal temps , i need to put manualy things on core settings?
thx btw
Hi mate, I got 4.598 and the temperature was in 63 degrees was the highest some of its core was on 56/59 degrees. Should I increase the voltage of it or this is enough? Thank you it's a very helpful for us.

4690k has 3.5ghz stock
Thanks! :)
tks man..it s my first OCK i made..i run a I7 4790k i did all the steps you did with exact same parameters...now my CPU is running constant at 4.500 Ghz...my max temps in prime 95 is 67° and idlle around 31° so it s very stable..tks a lot..very nice job you did..😁😎😉
I found that when I oc CPU per core ratio..I had warmer CPU temps , however when I sync all cores it made a big difference..with temps dropping down 10 degrees..why is that?? Please and thank you

This video helped a lot, but as I am Brazilian I was left with some doubts for not fully understand the language.
I have a Maximus Ranger VII and i I7 4790k, can define exactly the changes you made?
the ASUS Z97-Pro Gamer mobo can support only ddr3 ram with 1600mhz right? then why in your bios its 2400mhz?it is because of xmp?
1600MHz is the highest frequency in the JEDEC specification. XMP is technically overclocking the DIMMs beyond their rated speed...however it's using profiles validated by the manufacturers, meaning they guarentee that they can run far above the JEDEC spec. With XMP Z97 (and by extension this board) supports up to 3200MHz, though such highly clocked DDR3 is rather expensive.
I just got an Asus board and didn't know my way around the uefi/bios and this video was a big help! Honestly, I was getting blue screens and wanting to return the mobo, but after watching this was able to get at least a stable setting so I can use the thing. Now I can try some overclocking! I do kind of wish they (Asus) had a setting for just "bone stock" because the default settings gave me blue screens... still not completely ruling out something wrong with this board, but it seems to be working now, although not the turbo boost... Like I said, at least I have a starting point now! I guess I would ask you, does setting the clock multiplier then override the turbo boost clock speed? So, is turbo boost even a thing when putting settings to manual and setting the clock and voltage on your own, or does cpu still operate in a range? Thanks for the great video!
i don't have the ai overclock tuner in my uefi bios, i have an i7 9700k actualy at 4.55ghz how can i do something can be able to use the ai overclock tuner ??

I’m not pro with these stuff but from my experience
You probably OC your CPU too much
Or you don’t have enough Voltage
Perhaps overheated CPU so increasing voltage isn’t wise
If so
Lower your OC

I don't have the word *CPU Cache Voltage* it shows *CPU Ring Voltage* on my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard.
Nice tutorial. It isn't straightforward to do what the Mobo is supposed to do. Knowing about the CPU C State has unleashed the CPU that was a bit shy before. The stress test was useful.
I have same pc than u same ram you know why i cant use dual channel? Slot A1 and A2 dont work... Any idea?
maybe you damaged your board while installing a cooler. Unmount it and look at the upper right mounting hole or near it and look for open circuits.
